Sadly I think this is kind of spot on.

Except that the combat is very entertaining. And at it's heart it's still a shooter.

So disappointed with this game in terms of single player. The most bare bones story with basically nothing interesting going on (gameplay-wise or story-wise). To think they planned for it to have a lore comparable to Star Wars. WTF went wrong during development?

Hoping that Destiny 2 is a lot better...

NO! Just fucking NO! Bungie and Activision hyped THE FUCK out of this. So did the gaming media and these so-called "journalists". They deserve the backlash.

My expectations will be in check for every other game this year because none of them were hyped to hell and back. Shit, Destiny's hype makes Call of Duty's look quaint by comparison, and that takes some fucking HYPE dude.

Just trust the games that aren't hyped

Shadow of Mordor <<< Seriously underhyped

Far Cry 4

Evil Within

Lord of the Fallen

Diablo III even went as far as to include a mode that automatically skips the cutscenes and gives the player no option to even watch them at all (Adventure Mode).

Destiny pls

I am positive it will happen in a patch. With Activision being the publisher I can imagine there will be some "advice' on how to continue with the series. Look how they turned around Diablo 3? Diablo 3 is a fantastic ARPG now...don't care what anyone says.

Destiny has a good core, with a decent story...its not as horrible as everyone is trying to make it to be. Every game can't have a story like The Last of US? I mean seriously? When was the last time you got a fantastic story out of a action game with MMO/ARPG tendencies? Like never....(gameplay is pretty good in destiny and that is what I'm happy about overall.)

Just avoid really hyped games and Ubisoft games and you won't be disappointed.

POE isn't an MMO either. Just like Destiny, POE is instance-based. Although Destiny is more like Journey where you will occasionally come across another player, it's still only a handful of other players and POE doesn't do that at all because it's a different kind of game.

A more comprehensive look at "MMO" and it seems Destiny fits this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massively_multiplayer_online_game#First-person_shooter

If Destiny was a single player game that had online features it would be something akin to MORPG. Since it is not it is a MMO even though they instance lock people.

Call it what you want but Destiny easily fits within the MMO genre.

You forgot to mention the hype from Sony. Remember Sony hyping this at every bloody game show and basically every opportunity the could. Sony.

Why would I blame Sony for wanting people who are going to buy the game anyway to buy it on their console. They didn't lie to anybody, they just backed a horse they knew would sell their consoles. If it was a Sony exclusive I might give them a little shit but what you're saying is completely misguided.

Its like an MMO, but without the advantages of a MMO. There just aren't a lot of people to interact with in the world, its complicated interact with them, there's jack and shit explore with invisible walls and killzones all over the place, doing the same 3 quest variants over and again, lookin for chests that practically never have anything good in them, relatively poor customization(you can't even name your damn character).

Then its also like a shooter, but without any of the tight focus that tends to make them great. There's this open-ended nature to the encounter design and not in the Halo way typically, and the weapons are all kinda samey to adapt to various situations, and bosses are just grindfests to accommodate the various damage values and leveling systems, and the storytelling is just awful because they couldn't decide if they wanted to bother casual players with TOO much narrative(but they force you to watch cutscenes/exposition dumps every.single.time. because reasons).

Its half-and-half, and it just kinda half-ass. They say it "starts at level 20", but once you beat the story, you're just grinding the same strikes with the same enemies in the same encounters, but now the numbers are higher. The Beta actually showed off the whole game, minus the Raid, funny enough.

smh well hopefully that means the community will be free of people who'd rather analyze than enjoy.

Not that it could be better, but after seeing what Destiny is I wish Blizzard got their chance with Project Titan instead. I know that the only things that we know are rumors, but Titan was scrapped a couple of months after the Bungie deal with Activision IIRC, so people started thinking that Titan was going to be a MMOFPS, but got sidelined since Bungie was going to do Destiny and already had more experience in the FPS genre. All rumors, so take with a whole truck of salt.

Titan will come back, but it won't be what it once was. I have a feeling it will be spinned into WoW 2.0.

They weren't hyping this as just another action game with MMO tendencies. They were hyping it as revolutionary, with a story rivaling Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, massively ambitious, and with loads and loads to do.

"We like to tell big stories and we want people to put the Destiny universe on the same shelf they put Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter or Star Wars; we've already seen they do that with Halo. We were extremely proud of what we achieved with Halo... I'm pretty convinced we are going to do it again with Destiny in a way that maybe even Halo never achieved before," Parsons said. "What excites me is a number of years ago we talked with Activision and Activision believed in that vision, and that's why we like this partnership so much; these guys know big entertainment as well. They prove it over and over again."

I wouldn't call a 3 person squad a "large number of simultaneous players" or the PVP "large team-based combat".

Nope. Go play Planetside 2, then go back to Destiny and tell me it's comparable.

According to a very small, but very loud vocal minority. The majority of people on GAF at least seem to be very much enjoying it.

For now perhaps. Not sure how long the community will last, it depends on what Bungie can do to keep people interested.

They can enjoy it all they want. I'm not saying they can't; however, when they say this game is great because it does X great they're leaving opinion territory and getting into things we can measure and compare to things they may or may not be better. When people say, "the items are great and varied" we can call bullshit and bring reasons why.

That's my go to ticket for gaming. Games that don't get major hype but the devs celarly love them are my winners. Usually overhyping is used to sell your game without giving away its fallacies.

That just so happens to be my most anticipated game of the year and I've never even had the desire to play a LOTR game in my life. It just looks damn fun and it helps they keep using my favorite two phrases to sell it: Current gen version 1080p 60 fps and Monolith focused on only the PS4 and XBO versions of the game.

With an open world as big as any on the market, a blend of always-on multiplayer interaction and cinematic campaign, and a story that remains a mystery to all but the developers, Bungie’s Joe Staten helps fans get an idea of what to expect from Destiny. Since the console that will likely make the most of Destiny‘s potential have yet to be released (despite the studio’s optimism for current systems), it’s no surprise to hear the the game is one its developers feel will change gaming forever.

What the fuck are they smoking? There are about 18 things wrong with just the bolded part.

The majority of people in this thread, me included, have said it is a good game, just not a great one from the expectations that were given. Considering the dev behind it, you would think Destiny would be trying new things, not staying safe and doing "just enough."

Captain obvious, here :p

I'm just saying...this game is more polarizing than I thought and unbelievably so given my experience with the game thus far. Video games being a point of discussion used to mean sharing your joys with friends. It has evolved...to this. To each their own. Carry on. I shall not log out...cuz...like, I could still read this forum anyways if I did. :p

That's another thing that just gets me. "Game doesn't really start until level 20?" Unless you mean the one singular Raid , then no, that's not true whatsoever.

lol, and how are you gauging these numbers? Tons of people in the OT and in this review thread have given legit criticism, but of course, the defense force comes along and calls everybody a hater, band wagoner, that people voicing criticism are toxic and should post somewhere else. It seems a lot of Gaffers think a big new release means that's the time for complete positivity and anybody daring enough to criticize the game should shut the fuck up, because critical things being said must mean I have to enjoy the game less.

The "you're part of a vocal minority" argument is and always will be weak. People criticizing the game enjoyed core aspects, they're allowed to be critical like anybody else.

It's up there for me as well, probably tied with Evil Within. Ditto on other LOTR games, most of them have seemed bland to me (though I remember hearing good things about the Aragorn-led one on last gen). Really hope it turns out great and has a fantastically designed open world.

Destiny is absolutely trying new things. I think it's rather silly to say it isn't. Yes it has many similarities to Halo, Borderlands, Phantasy Star Online and so on, but all together in a shared world first person shooter in such an accessible format? It's pretty unique.

What the fuck are they smoking? There are about 18 things wrong with just the bolded part.
Yeah, I certainly wouldn't ever describe any part of this game as 'open world'. They are very clearly delineated areas with zero exploration or things to discover.

Because we currently have an on-going GAF consensus that shows as much.

I get it. But honestly, I'm getting tired of the drive by posts and people telling each other that they can't discuss a game that doesn't fall under 'so much fun' or just FAQ level stuff. I think very few people actually hate the game or to a point where they don't want to play it. But the game has a lot of flaws that are worth talking about IMO.

Your post was just 1 too many from the only echo chambers are allowed camp.

Should I just return my limited edition copy before I even open it?
Were you looking for something with a great story or that you could sink 100+ hours in? Then yes return it. If you were looking for a fun little shooter to pass a few hours with with good PvP, keep it.

Add this for lols

http://www.x360magazine.com/features/destiny-bungie-opens-the-floodgates-on-its-shared-world-shooter/

Quote
"In the straight-up campaign part of the game you’ll absolutely be experiencing stories that have a strong narrative spine, that have a beginning middle and an end.

There’ll be a cast of core characters that, like you, evolve over time.

We absolutely are going to tell good narrative stories and linear stories, but those are just part of what you can engage in with Destiny’s world."

Bungie failed so badly by their own yardstick.

Why did noone think about something like this before?

I appear to have downloaded the wrong version of Destiny.

If you don't know by now if it's your type of game or not I'm not sure what to tell you. The fact that we're only three days into the games release and people are already bored of it should tell you something though.

Eh I don't mind PvP but I'd rather use a mouse to do my shooting. Guess I'll look up how to return stuff on Amazon, hope it isn't too big of a monetary hit.

Show me a quote where they said it would be like Star Wars and Lord of the Rings...Anyone who thought that was kidding themselves. We get a game with an amazing story a couple of times every generation. Obviously, amazing is subjective, but seriously...these are video games we are talking about and we don't always get the "best" writers for all of these projects.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=892922&page=6

It's a shitty consensus thread. What does L4D have to do with Destiny? What is the use in looking at a score for Destiny? I enjoy Destiny, somewhere between a 3 and 4, but that is (and I think the point of that thread) devoid of the reasons why and why not. What is a strong single player campaign that is supposed to be derived from there? The Last of Us tight and heavily orchestrated, or the more free-form stuff from Souls titles?

The data that will come of this will be meaningless.

The last sites are full with the quote and the source. Just read.

I'm not really sure what qualifies as new though? It really just has forms of gameplay mechanics seen in past games either simplified or cut down. Diablo/Borderlands style loot, PvP arenas from WoW/other MMOs (even Halo), class abilities from pretty much any RPG, gun modifications/affixes aren't unique at all, double jump isn't unique and mounts definitely aren't either.

Don't get me wrong, what Destiny has is good, but it definitely isn't unique in any aspect. It just improves/plays it safe on most mechanics seen in plenty of past games.

I feel bad for anyone that had to review this. It would be nearly impossible for me to assign a score to it. It's the most fun I've had with a multiplayer game in years but it has some glaring flaws that, while they don't bother me all that much, would make it difficult to justify a high score.
