Destiny - Review Thread

Jeff Gerstmann from Giantbomb Quicklook:

I wish this game had more matchmaking in it.. you can't matchmake to do missions.. it's only for the crucible and for the strikes.

I'm sure on some level that's like a philosophical thing - "we think you should play with friends!" - and to which my response is, "..don't tell me how I can and can't play your game."

Look at Diablo 3..look at how carefree it handles matchmaking and just like "fuck it man jump into story jump in wherever let's do it!"

Like that is the ideal situation..don't make me like, call people up "hey buddy hey man let's play Destiny tonight!"

Like no, I just wanna play Destiny when I wanna play Destiny.. and I would like to play it with other people..........and I don't care if I know those people or not.

In fact, it's almost better if I don't."

Somebody said it in the OT, but it's like they took the final boss fight of Halo 2 and made it into an entire game.
LOL, yeah. I actually mentioned it in my previous comment:

-The gameplay design is decent, but again, it's much worse than their previous games. There is no interesting battle dynamics, like those that were present in the Halo games (for example, the classic charged PP shot to remove shields + headshot, using the PP to EMP vehicles, hitting the hand from the jackals to stun them + headshot, boarding vehicles...) Pretty much every enemy in the game is nothing more than a bullet sponge with a weak point, and that doesn't lead to very interesting encounters. Most battles are a variation of "shoot it till it's dead, aim for the weak spot to do it faster" The bosses are especially bad in that regard... like Tartarus, but 10 times worse, and nowhere near the level of excellence of, for example, the scarab battles (now that's how you design a good boss battle)
So yeah, I agree.

I thought he was invincible unless an A.I did something and opened him up, but again it's been a long while. But yes, I can agree in that context.

Yeah, some lady snipes the shield off him and then you can do damage to him, so I'm not really understanding the bullet sponge reference in regards to that encounter. But yes, some of the bosses in the Destiny can feel like a slog at times with how much health they have.

Question for everyone. It seemed with the beta everyone was sucked in amd having a lot of fun. Whats different that becomes apparent in the full game?

If somebody is looking for a single player first person shooter, there are a ton of other games that have stronger single player components. Of course that is the reviewer's opinion, but I find that opinion to be presented extremely poorly and without much elaboration.

I think he was talking about cod and battlefield when he was referring to other shooters. But yeah, I see what you mean now.

From what I have played the problem is that not enough is different. Still fun and a good game but it could be more fleshed out in my opinion.

EDIT: Seems like some good reviews so far. I'm pretty impressed.

I've been playing this game solo throughout. Not sure where this, can't solo stuff is coming from.

Only thing I've teamed up for is Strike missions with random matchmaking people. Currently 5/5 without any issues. Been a lot of fun!

For some I think it is how repetitive some of the content is and the lack of more meaningful content and mission design. I kinda saw that coming and tempered my expectations but I'm still having a ton of fun with it. The small sample of the beta was enough to pull people into the tight gameplay loop which is awesome.

Woops, meant 4.5 lol. Anyway, more great scores then good. Don't see any bad scores? So I dunno. Seems certain few want to game to be made out far worse then it actually is.

You realize someone can flip that last line on its head and be just as, if not more-so, correct?

I agree with Y2Kev that, and just like with every review thread, people are just coming in to have their own opinions stroked by the media machine and just a huge meta game of confirmation bias. The |OT| was/is an echo chamber for it being the funnest game of the year, while this thread will likely be where the criticisms and, unfortunately, those looking for a bone to pick will congregate
Which is the |OT| communities' fault in some ways
.

Destiny 2 needs actual space travel and dogfights. Next gen only, eliminate loading times (good god so long!), more loot and levels, and more classes.

That's pretty much what I thought Destiny would be considering the way they were hyping it up. It turns out that it's just a glorified wave mode + pvp.

People believed that the beta was just that, a beta, and that the final game would be far more open. It turns out it isn't, and that Destiny is rather small for what it was being sold as. Also some beta stuff has since changed, both for good and for bad (loot is far less now than it was in beta).

Really? I am getting way more loot now than I was before....more of it is crap though I guess. The best weapons for me come from mission rewards.

The fact that you could one-shot Grunts and Jackals with a precision weapon in Halo was super satisfying. But you never get that same satisfaction in Destiny because even fodder enemies tend to require multiple headshots to take down. I never get that feeling of being a badass because I just artfully dropped all these enemies. It's more like, "I sure shot all those guys and hid when my health was low".

People glossed over the issues due to it being a beta ("it'll be changed in the full release!"), and the fact that they still didn't know much about the full game. Remember that huge thread when people realised there would only be one zone per planet? With the full game what you see if what you get.

I will be VERY disappointed if they don't add space travel and dogfights in at some point in their "10 year plan" (or whatever they said) for the franchise.

I get the feeling I'm going to be disappointed, though.

So I just logged about four more hours into this game and you know what? I still really like it. The feeling I got from the alpha/beta is still there.

Part of it is the great co-op (my friends list is full of Destiny players) and part of it is just wandering around and shooting things. It's very relaxing. :)

It's lacking that feel of getting a new weapon, going back and wrecking everything. This is pretty much what loot games like Diablo thrive on. Destiny doesn't have it. You upgrade your weapons, but it feels all the same.

Because beta was 2 hours of fun.

I didn't expect the game to be basically exactly the same with no new mechanics or even different mission structure after 20 hours. I expected different mission types and for the Strikes to have unique boss battles requiring different strategies and all the other ways that games progress and evolve through the campaign.

What became apparent was that hour 20 of Destiny was basically the same as hour 2 of Destiny.

Awesome game so far The opening mission alone through my Samsung HD and that sweet sound going through my amp into my floor standing Klipsch speakers hmmm hmm like jamaican jerked chicken.

I like the game quite a bit but I really feel that anything in the 9's is unwarranted. A 7.5 or 8 seems right to me. It's a great starting point for the franchise.

While I loved the Alpha and Beta, I couldn't help as my breh and I kept progressing in the game that there would be something more. Moments like the Sword of Crota and some others were flickering lights of hope, but it dulled out again to the same pattern.

I also thought that maybe the story elements driving the missions would put in some agency or personal connection to what you're doing, or just a sense of accomplishment, but that never truly came about either despite Venus having some effort in that direction. As a writer from USGamer put, it just felt like being on a treadmill. It was the element of the beta I hoped would improve, but alas no.

And that's just the major factor. If you liked playing the Beta over and over again for just that gameplay loop purely, then you'll love Destiny. But if you want a bit of variety and drive to what you're doing outside of that, it isn't really there.

Wow, I'm surprised by the massive backlash in this thread.

They're just numeral representations of how much a critic liked the game. It's the content of the review that's most clear about the reviewer's opinion.

That's what I always say about my grades in college. It's all about what the professor had to say about me and not what percentage I got in the class. ;p

I largely agree. To be fair though, some of the new enemies do add an interesting mix to the same gunplay. But yeah, the unimaginative mission structure is really unfortunate.

I agree with the 7-8.range scores. Destiny is an enjoyable games and I've put quite a few hours in it already, but the writing of the campaign is cringeworthy, the recycling of maps is very disappointing and the MP is so thoroughly unbalanced I can barely play more than two of three games max before I quit.

Jeff Gerstmann from Giantbomb Quicklook:

Coming to this right after Diablo 3, I was definitely thinking the same thing. It is so quick and easy to find people to play with in D3 that I pretty much never went at it solo. So far I've only played once with a group in Destiny and I'm well into the game already. And the game is wayyyy more fun with others, so they've hurt the experience by not having match making in all game modes.

The people who are enjoying the game are probably playing it rather than complaining about it.

Those aren't mutually exclusive. The fact that I could criticize the game between my sessions of it that I enjoy seemed to go over peoples heads in the |OT| with embarrassing results.

Yeah, the overall gameplay design is not so great. The gameplay mechanics in Halo made for some really fun and dynamic encounters. Destiny lacks that kind depth, unfortunately.

Exactly.

Wow, I'm surprised by the massive backlash in this thread. There was a lot of positivity towards the Destiny beta on NeoGAF.

I think people (me included) were hoping the game to be more than just the beta, but it was just more of the beta.

My score would be a 5/10 at best. Not a happy chappy owning the digital CE.

- Poor AI
- Terrible attempt of a story; hampered by exposition style
- Ultra repetitive mission design
- No characterisation; all the NPCs in the tower are completely one-dimensional and add absolutely nothing
- Completely non-social unless you are in a fireteam of friends, in which case you could be playing any game and get the same experience
- Loading times are fucking atrocious
- Limited customisation, mostly meaningless cosmetic stuff and fails hard at even that
- No reason at all to explore the barren levels; there is literally nothing to discover, its clinically sterile

It has some solid points, music, graphics are nice, spawning a sparrow anywere to zoom off to your destination is very cool, PvP is decent fun.

But damn is it a disappointment everywhere it counts.

I agree with everything in this post, except for maybe the score.

Killzone Shadow Fall, Knack, Forza 5, Killer Instinct (6 characters at launch), Ryse, Battlefield 4, Titanfall, Watch Dogs ... Destiny. Anyone else feel that most of the new gen "big titles" have all been kind of "meh" once they've actually arrived?

I don't mean to sound like a fanboy (avatar quote incoming) or even derail the thread but Wii U titles seem to be the only ones either meeting or exceeding my expectations... well except Sonic Lost World, that game sucked.

Going into the fall, I'm having mixed thoughts on Sunset Overdrive and DriveClub but feel almost certain that Smash Bros and Bayonetta 2 will deliver.

I feel that way when it comes to new AAA IPs. We're still waiting for that new IP on current gen consoles that is high profile and critically acclaimed by reviewers and gamers. It could be early 2015 before that game finally arrives (Bloodborne). And even longer than that for a well-received multiplatform new IP to hit.

I feel that, to some extent, people are enjoying it because they are having fun playing with their friends rather enjoying the game and it's gameplay by itself.

I have played through a bit solo and I was bored to death, if I had friends to chat with while playing, it would have been a much different experience. Similar to how eating alone is less fun than eating along with a friend.

Polarizing as expected, but still on the high end so far. Whatever, no regrets on my purchase. I am getting more than my money's worth.

Remember Team Fortress 2 was an 7.5 - 8 game at launch and now it's a 9.5 game. This kind of games happen.
Team Fortress 2 was amazing from launch. Other than the Pyro class's lack of an airblast, all the core mechanics were fun from the get-go. And to help matters, it was incredibly cheap for its value and was included with the Orange Box.

This is the best attitude if you don't care for the criticisms. If you're having fun and it's a solid thing for you, that is what is most important. It shouldn't be a big deal if someone disagrees. Same goes for people who have issues and are disappointed in their purchase. Other people having fun shouldn't be an affront (though I haven't seen this nearly as much as the former).

The answer is quite obvious.

Dark_Souls_II_cover.jpg
Yes!
Gonna be tough to be the best RPG released so far this year.

ZMeYzy5.png
Maybe.
The Stick of Truth!!!!!
Nope (though it's still a pretty good game.)

GotY's going to be interesting again I think, I suspect it'll be like 2012 where some sites may give it to something like Destiny, namely those most prone to just going with one of the biggest AAA games that year like GameTrailers, while a lot will pick either a more under the radar game (and Divinity isn't TOO far under and Dark Souls II has a >90 Metacritic rating so it's a legit contender) or even go full on indie. Though I guess we have the unique wrinkle in that some nuts will go and give it to The Last of Us AGAIN, or at least use it as an excuse to make up for not picking it the year prior.

Or Dragon Age Inquisition will surprise us all and spawn jokes riffing off of SNL.

I was kind of kidding, but as brutal a mind field that was. I have a few. It was great when you found some cool people.

Eh, thought my joke would be fitting given how often I would be facing my friends' younger (and more skilled admittedly) siblings and relatives. Don't think I've kept anyone really, but that's my fault for not being more active in the online space in Halo or in mp games in general.

Destiny is a strange beast.

On one hand, there are some pretty major omissions and flaws in the game. The anti-social online structure. The lack of a compelling story, or even really an attempt at a story. The lack of variety in guns and armor resulting in a fairly samey feel between characters. The lack of character in the Tower. Seriously, it's the last city and it feels like an early hub town in other games. The NPC's have no interesting traits. The missions and side missions are repetitive - why not have Sparrow Races and such?

Overall it feels like Bungie wanted to take the Halo formula, and combine it with and amalgamation of Borderlands and an MMO. And that would have been incredibly. But so far it's a subpar version of all three.

But on the other hand, I can't deny that I'm having fun. I've found its fun to play around with rare guns and level them up for more dynamic gameplay. I love the Fusion Rifle. I love a lot of the enemy designs.

So I hope Destiny will make as big of an improvement through free content patches and DLC as WoW did going from Vanilla to The Burning Crusade. Destiny has a fantasy foundation, there is just a LOT of building to do on top of it.
