Destiny - Review Thread

Anyone else think that the online will be nearly empty in 2 months? Certainly happened with Titanfall, and that one was actually fun.

After Black Friday, the first DLC then Christmas? Not a chance.

I'm assuming they'll release another DLC around March when I'd expect the playerbase to be slipping.

It's been two days since the game came out. I expected to see more reviews for this game. Is the scope of Destiny that huge? I haven't bought it yet but I had some thoughts.

Who cares. If you like the game then cool if not there are other games.
I digged the game there are some stuff I didn't but it's not a big deal to me.
Ranking or scores is pointless.

You are right, that's basically all I have to say. Just enjoy the game if you are having fun, life is short.

Non tbh, if your still on the fence for next gen wait till early next year where you'll be getting things like the witcher and Bloodborne. Or if x bone tickles your fancy grab sunset overdrive this fall.

I already have a pc, i'm just debating if destiny is the game that makes picking up a console worth it. Plus some of the ps4 exclusives look really good.

Not that I trust any review unless I've had a chance to play and really experience a game for myself, but why would the separation between metacritic and non-metacritic approved even matter? Aren't pretty much all reviews just the opinions of folks not too much different from yourself to begin with?

I can sorta see wanting to weed out random troll sites that have only put out one or two reviews maybe ever, or that have simply demonstrated in some important enough way why their reviews absolutely can't be trusted, but as for the rest, they're pretty much all the same, are they not?

I don't think it's necessarily lacking in content, so much as features. Destiny easily has more raw content than you're average CoD, but it is missing some of CoD's features that really bolster the lasting potential. Or at least, it has a much different set of those features. In terms of raw content, Destiny stacks up to any other standard $59 console FPS.
This Mission: Release Peter Dinklage and kill waves of enemies while he does things.
Next Mission: Release Peter Dinklage and kill waves of enemies while he does things.
Next Mission: Release Peter Dinklage and...

If this is "content" then I honestly hope they don't release any more of it. Game has so much potential with Sci Fi and the best we get is "The Darkness", "The Fallen", "The Hive". This is some James Cameron "Unobtanium" level shit happening in this game.

So much damn potential with story, lore, gameplay, etc - just sitting there waiting to be utilized but instead somebody made the decision to keep it locked up tight because moving the genre forward was for the birds. Its insane :(

I don't know which ones are "troll sites" so it's just extra information for the reader to do with what she/he wishes.

Review wise it won't be the GOTY candidate it wants to be, but sale wise, it will unfortunately sell a crap ton.

Come on, it's not that bad a game is it? A disappointment compared to the promises but it's a formula that deserves to be improved, the set-pieces (Mission design) and world/story interaction in particular.

Oh my fucking god...when did an 86 become a game that wasn't considered a critical success? The hyperbole and mentality of some of you guys is embarrassing.

We're all predicting and basing our opinions off notable critic impressions, and the 86 is based on 6 reviews.

this needs driven home again and again -- it's a social game, a game bungie touted as being impossible to experience without a living population, and you can't talk to or communicate with people you see in any way. This isn't just a minor oversight. It's worthy of ridicule. If any of you guys reviewing the game are reading this, please point this the hell out, because it's no small detail.

GAF's trademarked hyperbole in full force here.
So 86% on Metacritic and the game flopped?

Not a flop but be aware of this:

There's only 5 review on metacritic guys, let's not get ahead of ourselves.

I can already see from the impressions of some sites it's hardly going to be glowing (videogamer, giant bomb and eurogamer definitely come to mind)

Reviewers weren't allowed to play the game early, and any multiplayer game is going to need a little extra time to review properly.

Just came in to see the reviews. Seems like the game flopped.
I don't think you know what the word flop means.
86% metacritic and $500m in the bank from the first day alone. Pretty sure Activision and bungie consider this to be a huge success. Especially considering it's a new IP.

Exactly. I'm only gonna pay attention to the reviews that look like they played the game for more than a day or 2.

Yeah, I agree. But I mean compared to like a Cal of Duty (where the whole campaign is pretty much comprised of a singular objective of "move forward") theres a lot more content. More weapons, more gear, more objectives (yes I know that seems unbelievable, but like it or not, there is a lot more to do outside of PvP in Destiny). I think where Destiny falters is its features and design. There's a good suite of PvP maps, weapons, and gear, but there aren't enough modes to play them, and the progression system is arguably not as rewarding.

Are games in this franchise likely to have longevity in the sales charts like Halo 1-3, or Call of Duty games? I see lots of people saying 'bomba', but that's the only thing that will determine if this game is a bomba.

Not surprised honestly. The Beta didn't instill any confidence in me, and what I've seen from the full game has been 'okay' at best. The Story is poorly told and very generic.

The patrol mode is awful. Boring uninhabited worlds with tiny clusters of enemies that spawn every 30 seconds. Beacon missions consist of:

1) Kill enemies and pick up the thing they drop

2) Kill Enemies

3) Go here and stand until you reach 100%

4) Go here and hold square to complete mission

Absolutely no variety, and nothing interesting despite everything they have to work with.

Gunplay is pretty fun, and I enjoy doing missions on hard difficulty where it feels satisfying to complete them. I haven't tried/unlocked raid mode, so I can't speak to that yet. Crucible is MEH at best and feels just added on just to satisfy the people who would ask "Why no competitive multiplayer?"

Nah. There's a lot of progression to be had with weapons, skills, and subskills (?) in this game. I feel like it's going to have staying power at least until March. Unless, of course, Advance Warfare comes out dropping 10/10 bombs from reviewers everywhere.
On one hand, you're right. On the other hand, that system is engrained in the collective mindset right from school, when 70% is considered average. I don't really blame game critics for following an almost universal trend.
I never thought of it that way, but it's aptly precise. Anything below a 6/10 is trash and the 0-6 points basically exist to let you know just how crap a game is beyond crap, being that there are different levels of crap, of course.

Since TitanFall

Exactly. Its not a flop in the typical sense like a Lair or Too Human, but it's a flop in comparison to what was expected just as Titanfall and Watch Dogs were. User scores of 5-6 on many sites like Amazon and Metacritic show that these are similar situations. Whether you agree with those scores or think people are trolling doesn't matter as that happens with every big game and there are still many "valid" reviews that are at a dischord with the media.

Those games received similar scores, yet many on here would still deem them flops.
There are many games that have received good media scores that did not line up with the general user's experience.

We can look at Bioshock Infinite, Assassins Creed 3 and a barrage of others to attest to that. It is still FINE to enjoy a game or even love a game that has had such a reception.

Also, I'm not sure the metacritic is likely to stay at 86. That figure is only based on 6 reviews and metascores generally drop as more reviews come out and many in-progress reviews haven't been great.

It's possible that the metascore could end up significantly lower. Time will tell whether or not this will be the case, but user reviews have already spoken just as they did with Titanfall/Watch Dogs. If you can call those games flops based on the same criteria, then using those exact terms Destiny IS a flop as well.

You just covered 90% of the problems i have with Destiny. (i cant believe more aren't infuriated with this but i'd guess they're mostly just the multiplayer only kids)

I expected more from Bungie in terms of mission design and level scope. Permanent, stationary, non-random enemy positions with quick respawns is a fucking compete joke. Honestly i understand some of why they did it that way but at least add roaming bands of random enemies or a little spawn variance and more time between respawns so i done eliminate a group move on to fight a group 50 yards in front and then the previous group respawns and starts shooting me in the back!

The numbers shouldn't matter nearly as much as the content of the reviews. I don't care if someone gives the game a 6 or a 9, it's not going to fix the lack of matchmaking whether they lambast it or hand-wave it. Which is why the "census" thread is pointless, boiling everyone's FPS tastes from last gen down to Love it/Hate it and grading Destiny on a number scale doesn't even attempt to address the gripes that people have with it.
