Destiny The Taken King Review Thread

No, backtracking is doing the same mission say in Halo or a Destiny story mission. This is not back tracking its new story, gameplay and mechanics.

All of destiny is now quests as opposed to chapter 1 to 20...Its the game now, you can call it all sidequest backtracking if that makes you happy. Enjoy your Halo.

Backtracking is going to the same exact location you were previously at. Often to do something that's only marginally different from what you originally did there.

It's present in a lot of games so they can simply reuse environments and assets.

Its the same environment only, new mechanics, enemies and gameplay. Its not marginally different to play.

The Crota raid is now a stealth mission, its great and a totally new play mechanic. Destiny MGS5 lol.....Things like this people who play Destiny will cheer, people who want to 'do what they do' will call it back tracking. Its pretty obvious.

The best fighting level I played yesterday was the VOG quest, the fight was intense, tethered enemies you had to kill shield generator and taken captains with blinding black balls making you have to jump around the map, with some raid VOG mechanics in there later ......Its why I play destiny.

My perspective for gaming is backtracking is playing again mission chapter 14 with difficulty modifiers.

Honestly any score of 10 or 0 for any game should be thrown out.. same thing with yelp

Launch FFXIV deserved every one of those 0s. It was like a paid pre-alpha of a bad game. At least they didn't have the nerve to collect the monthly fee.

Its not snide, you can help yourself you can google everything you need to know, you can ask for raid help on GAF its easy, Bungie want the game to allow you to make online friends....its clear in the mission structure and even the crucible bounties now say win a game with fireteam of 2 or more...

I was new to Ps4 from 360, I have a few hundred on friends list already....all through Destiny. I am not embarrassed, I have read hundreds of anti destiny posts, they all say the same stuff...Go read them and then read your post again....Join a Clan or play with DGAF...its a coop game through and through

Your comment was unhelpful and unwarranted. I did not post anything that was "anti Destiny." I simply posted my impressions of the time I spent with the game and asked a simple question. That was all. I don't care how many posts you've read. I don't care how many people are on your friends list. I don't care what system you play on. I am not going to go and read posts from people who don't like the game. That is not going to help me at all. I asked a simple, straight forward question and you jumped in with your condescending, unhelpful, snide little swipe. Embarrassing.

I played Destiny when it first came out and dropped it after a month or two. I didn't like the repetitive, horribly designed missions. I loved the beta but when I realized that every mission was exactly the same I was not happy.

The other thing that really annoyed me was I never got to do any raids because there was no public matchmaking, so that content was completely denied to me. I still own the game but I don't understand how this dlc works. Do people really have to buy the other dlc packs to play it?

You made 2 points, the first was the year old destiny complaint which is no where near valid any more, it changed during the expansions never mind Taken king.

Second point was you could not do any raids, but it takes minutes to team up with Destiny GAF, but you say the content was DENIED.

OK, It takes 2 minutes to team up on GAF, but that is denied to you because ? The whole point of RAIDS is a team play mechanic.

What's the point in even posting this? You're obviously just looking to start another argument.

Its the same stuff, its tiring I agree. Read every Destiny thread on GAF...its the same things said usually by the same lot. Maybe we need a destiny troll chalk board ?

I sorta agree with you, not quite to the degree that I found myself struggling to keep going though

I thought the campaign started off really strong. Several cgi cinematics and cutscenes in the first few missions. But then they just stop, and there's hardly any cutscenes until you beat the campaign.

The missions themselves kinda fell off as well in terms of presentation. First mission was really awesome with all the scripted events that happened, ships fleeing, things blowing up etc. But none of the other missions come close to that level of "uniqueness".
Got to disagree, or maybe you just like the typical Michael Bay-isms... Which hey, whatever rocks your socks off.. But to me, due to prior experience in the game, I found the funeral refreshing and fun (introducing a new mechanic) as well as the frantic escape in the other mission where things go wrong and they introduced a new way to open doors. Imo I don't need a cut scene between every mission, they still had nono explaining stuff before missions, fleshing it out more

Looking really good, I'm happy for Bungie about this. (Edit: even though I really hate Destiny, this is coming from an anti-fan)

Dat 4.1 user review score on MC, though! What's that all about?

That Gamers Temple review reads like a 10th grade book report.

Gotta love fresh review threads.

I'm am in full agreement with you there

Glad to see it's reviewing well. I don't think I'm going to get it just yet, but I definitely will pick it up down the line - and I didn't play House of Wolves or The Dark Below, so there should be a lot of new content (I only played the vanilla game).

Sounds like they've ironed out most of the flaws from the first release and have now really hit the ground running. This stark improvement makes me pretty excited for Destiny 2 proper.

Good to see Bungie fixing what's wrong with the game. All of my friends are getting back into it now and I'm tempted to join them. I just can't justify spending another $60 on this game.

I enjoyed the game before and after but I feel these reviews are giving a false impression to those who were never previously interested or who didn't like the game after playing originally.

It is not even in the same ballpark as some like FF ARR.

Yeah it's tweaked, polished and the new content is great but it's the same game it was before for the most part.

FF realm reborn is cool, but the combat imo does not touch the satisfaction level of Destiny

Is this really that good? My complain with the first Destiny and both add-on was how restrictive Bungie is about not letting you play the content you paid for.

For example weekly hardcore strikes. I dont have friends who owns Destiny. They have matchmaking for strikes but those hardcore strikes? No you cant play. I felt like I was literally playing almost same strike over and over even though I had both the add-ons. I honestly did not even know what I paid for after a while. Whats new whats old.

And Raids lol fuck couldnt play either.

Thats fair enough, value is subjective. I value a great shooter with what I consider the finest mechanics I have ever played. And I played allot of shooters.

I would pay $ 60 just for the new raid, I will play that more than most shooters I buy just for that 1 element.

I would not pay more than 20 $ for a platformer, normally I only get them free with PSN but that is my perception of value for what I like.

The weekly strikes are now match made, just not for teh nightfall option. Yes you can play, just ask Neogaf community, 2 minutes hard work typing a line.

Also strikes now have massive variability, different enemies (fallen and next time cabal and taken on same map)...

But if you want to solo things and not be sociable, a social coop game maybe is not for you.

GAF has THE best community to get together for the end game content.

Pop your head into our community forum and usually you´ll have a fireteam within MINUTES.

If they really wanted people to play with they could of done so.

I think every poster who raises this point knows the answer...

They say they want to do a highly co-ordinated team coop raid, where everybody has some role to play in getting through it, and surprisingly dont want to team up or put any effort into it.

Play a matchmade weekly strike once and see for yourself how wrong you are.

EDIT: Sorry, I think I read you completely wrong. ;)

Within mins lol way to be ignorant guys. And not even complaining about raids, why the fuck some strikes does not have matchmaking.

Ignorant? I can see someone being ignorant - hint: It´s not me.

I´m done talking to you.

Good day.

Why is everyone hating it on metacritic?

gon4t9h.png

Probably because overall to get to this point it's cost them (the consumer) $60+$35+$40. $135 for a game that you should have gotten a year ago for $60 is tough for people to stomach.

I look at it this way, shit happens. They brought out a sub par game but I still played it for 240+ hours. Bungie listened and fixed the game, It's what it should have been from the get go. But for them to take Destiny and turn it around in a years time well, that's actually pretty impressive imo.

You do not want help, you just want to moan. You can play every strike match made.

Just not the nightfall difficulty level of that strike.

Anway, I give up, you dont seem to be looking for help, thats clear.

While I mostly agree with you, I never had to pay someone 40€ to write me a love letter...

And here come more ...OK I am outta here.

People sure do get offended because of this game.whats the point of a review thread if people cant give their own impressions of the game, negative or positive? Or is this thread solely for the reviews from gaming sites?

There are a lot of ways to give readers impressions without pretending you can give it a thorough review based on two days of playing at Bungie, IMO. Most of the reputable outlets just posted impressions and noted that their reviews would be coming later.

Oh dear.

Within mins lol way to be ignorant guys. And not even complaining about raids, why the fuck some strikes does not have matchmaking.
I mean they are right. Post in the thread that you wanna do Nightfall, 2 other people will respond in minutes, for real.

Same exact thing with raids. Takes a few minutes.

Yes it's an extra step, but it's an easy solution here on gaf.

As someone who might not ever play raids, I just want to know if the base game is better for a solo player. I own Destiny but got bored and stopped playing once I hit LV10. It sounds like it's much better for a player like myself, this time around.

I feel like most people who love raids are probably going to grab TTK no matter what. Seems like a safe assumption, IMO.

The base game and solo-experience are 'improved', but that's mostly because of the 2.0 update and not the just TTK. But yeah, you`ll lock yourself out of a lot of great content by playing only solo. The whole game should 'open up' a bit earlier so it should be a more diverse experiences, but don't expect that it's suddenly a Mass Effect-ish story-heavy game. Bungie made a lot of things more 'rewarding' for the player so it feels less like a grind, but all the content is still aimed at being played times and times again, it's just that with TTK certain missions have cutscenes and a bit more of a meta-narrative happening overal (more dialogue, Ghost can scan stuff for more lore-exposition, etc).

I am not beating a dead horse at all, I'm telling you the reality. Whether or not the veracity of the phrase "this is how it should have been at launch" is accurate is besides the scope of my argument. You stated people are ridiculous at this point if they complain about the game given how much content it has for $60. The reality is most people are not angry about the content. They are angry about much more significant problems, from the scope of exploration, to the negative way many people interpret it handles its narrative (and as we now know, they cut tons of story content at the 11th hour), to the repetitiveness of gear grinding. You may not like to hear it - it's clear where you hitched your horse in this fight - but that is the actual framing that is necessary to understand why people remain annoyed at Destiny.

It is perhaps still true by the way that given what we did get at launch, people might decide to say things like "this is how it should have been at launch" if they interpret that the content of Taken King finally delivers on the promise that the neutered version of Destiny people got hinted at in its original launch. Arguments are far more nuanced than you are trying to give them credit for. It's not some blind attack on your favorite property.

I feel like I'm in Reddit philosophy lol

Depends on what you're expecting.

If you liked Raiding, PvP with buddies, playing around with tons of different gear on a rather limited set of activities? You'll be right at home. Otherwise if you didn't like it before you won't like it now.

The story is a lot better. Waaay better mission design. But nobody can play this game for the campaign and truly enjoy it. The missions will last you maybe 3 hours. If that's what you're looking for, skip.

Exploring the new Patrol zone with friends, finding chests and puzzles, running the new Strikes at higher difficulties, preparing for the Raid, learning map layout and strats in the new PvP modes etc: that's where the game shines.

For people playing solo and not doing co-op with friends: all of Destiny, with all the expansion, is probably a US$30 experience.

For the fun I have playing with others? I'd pay hundreds for this game. Most fun I've ever had in a video game.

Id agree with this. My friends and I played everything on hard and had a super fun time 3 manning story missions and the daily. Nothing compares however solo the game would be a lesser experience for sure.

Okay? Then dont reply to my "moaning". Way to help by saying you will find players here within mins. I have spent days on bungie forums to find fire teams to complete raids, but timing never works out at the end. But here I am not even complaining about raid anymore. I want better gear, more xp, more vanguard points. Want to do strike on nightfall difficulty. Thats all. You are telling me if I want to play its not impossible. Well ya nothing is impossible. Its just inconvenient and and redundant fucking step (not talking about raid) i get why they dont implement matchmaking for that.

As a Xbox Player, GAF destiny thread isnt much help. Trust me.

What are some things they've fixed to make it the way it should have been? Sorry, I'm too lazy to read the thread. Can somoene recap for me?

Ohhhhh yep. That'll do it sorry. On PS4 it isn't a problem at all. Sorry to hear.

The shortcut to level 20, how do you do that, is that part of the taken King. I want to start a new character.
You get a consumable that you can use to get any one character to level 25...you can use it even when you are level 1. It will only get you to 25, meaning you can play Vault of Glass or TTK story missions but your subclass will not be unlocked so you won't have any of your abilities until you level them up.

Are people hinting they're judging the release game via the made up versions of Destiny that don't exist and that Bungie never promised again?

It's one thing to dislike a game because you dislike the game. However, it's a waste of time to buy into gossip. It's like people just don't want to admit the Destiny we got was the one we got.

I'm interested to jump back in but my two friends who I played it with when it came out are both done with this game and have no interest in revisiting it. Because of that, I guess I'll be skipping it too.

Sometimes first impressions can be really damning.

Xbox does have a harder time for sure. Have you tried r/fireteams? Between gaf and r/fireteams I see quite a few Xbox posts.

You're right about matchmaking in essence however it's just not that simple and I think will be very hard for bungie to implement in a meaningful way into destiny. The average match made player in destiny is TERRIBLE. The weekly strike matchmaking was so bad for me at times I wish I could just solo it. Now take that into a raid or nightfall strike and yeesh.

All that being said I hope bungie does something for people like you who do want matchmaking.

If you are on ps4 we have tons of gaf bros waiting for you. I literally have 180+ destiny bros on my psn. If you want message me I'll add you to the neogaf group chat.

Thanks I will look into it. And honestly I have never experience any problem playing weekly strike. Matchmaking is great for things they already have.
That's interesting. I wonder if the average Xbox owner is a more shooter oriented gamer. There would be times I'd get so frustrated I'd just start gjallahorning everything to move the group forward in my experiences on psn.
