Destiny - Review Thread

Keep getting an error code called "centipede" and the fix to this issue is simply too much. Yeah, I'm not doing all that to play this mediocre game. I'm taking this back, fuck this always online BS.

I decided to buy Destiny because it seemed like my type of game and I really enjoyed my time with the beta. Hell, some of the issues with the beta made me suspect the critical reception might wind up being a bit divisive.

But whatever, I'm a puppet dancing on the strings of Activision's marketing because I like a Bad Thing™ that True Gamers™ have rejected.

I don't own the game and after the beta, I don't plan to TBH but I can absolutely appreciate that the combat loop clicked for some people. At the end of the day, it's all about how much you enjoy that particular element against various backdrops.

So yeah, the comments implying people who like the game are sheep manipulated by evil cunning marketing or feel obligated to like it seem out of place.

Waiting for a critical player mass to let reviewers touch it seems really disingenuous on their part though. I don't get the vibe that having more randoms makes everything better somehow.

People who have nothing to bring to discussion than:

People who like the game are sheep (which is admittedly rare in occurrence) and have an agenda

or

People who are criticizing the game fell for hype and have an agenda

Can leave the way they came in. There's always going to be some crazy brand loyalist or subject shitter in these things, but that doesn't mean suddenly everyone falls under that umbrella. Grade A crazy with these high profile releases I tell ya.

Hopefully this means it won't be long before this hits £20.

I want to throw more grenades or something, I feel like all I'm ever doing is shooting the same gun over and over waiting for things to charge

Then you should be dissapointed that Destiny fails to live up to standards that were set 13 years ago. In loot, progression, communication features, encouragement to explore, class variety, boss fights, matchmaking, etc.

Destiny should compare its final boss fight to Dark Falz and kill itself.

damn this post has me rollin'

people are so salty over this game lol

I think low reviews are due to not only having things that modern game reviewers suddenly "hate" but also pissing them off

Honestly, the game is really good mechanically, I think a lot of people are upset that it's not Halo

Man, you could have picked anything from the Halo series to make your point, and you chose this.

I will take pretty much any encounter throughout Destiny over the awful flying in circles for 5 minutes repetition seen in that video. The "grindy" boss battles that people are complaining about is not only in full force in that particular Halo 3 encounters, but it's actually worse and less varied!

Destiny player question. Does the core gameplay loop change from beta to end game? Like can you spec your characters to be full tank, full melee full magic slinging etc? The cd for skills were super long in the beta but it seemed like you can spec for lower cd.

I wouldn't say the core gameplay loop changes all that much, but there definitely is more specialization as you progress. Each class has two sub-classes with different sets of grenade and super abilities, there are various passive skills that change your basic stats and alter how your abilities work, and there are stats on gear (Strength, Discipline, Intellect) that reduce the cooldowns on melee abilities, grenades, and super abilities respectively. Rarer equipment also has a greater variety of upgrades and special perks on it.

I'm enjoying the game. Needed something to play with my bro and it's fun to get a few missions in every night. I haven't tried the multiplayer yet so we both stay close in level. I suppose the fact that this game had a huge budget/marketing doesn't really effect how I see the game and don't really understand why it would.

Destiny is not a good shooter now?

Destiny is a great shooter. I generally hate shooters, but this one is fantastic. Best shooter gameplay mechanics I've yet come across.

What a weird thing to say.

Couldn't someone just come right back and say I love a lot of shooters and Destiny's just doesn't hold up?

edit: Wouldn't the fact that you hate shooters just lessen how much value people should give your impression?

I actually enjoy the game more than I was expecting but I'm frustrated by the multiplayer. The maps seem so small and time to kill is too fast. Also the lag feels weird.

I really want to know if Bungie expected this or if they were sitting around the office with champagne bottles waiting to be uncorked and expecting like a 95. I feel kinda bad for them. I really like the game and am having tons of fun with it but recognize its failings.

Looks like I skipped the wrong game, heh.

Was I disappointed with Watch_Dogs? Definitely, the graphics did not live up to the hype, at all. The gameplay, however, felt a lot like Splinter Cell once I chose to be stealthy about how I approached any objectives. Pretty good game, in the end. It felt complete.

Destiny's got great gunplay, and it is fun to play for short periods of time. But ultimately, it is quite repetitive and just incomplete. I'd still give it a 7/10 for what it does right, though.

Why is Gamespot and IGN taking their sweet time compared to everyone else? Can we trust the early reviews?

They are having a hard time picking between the money that is on the table for them to review high, or the suffering and pain they had to go through to play this disappointing game due to inflated hype and want to let out the truth!!!

So they are probably just asking for a few more dollars on the table.

There's some solid criticism, and Destiny has things to improve on...and given Bungie's quality, they will be addressed, improved, and expanded upon.

As cynically reaching as this may sound, I reckon there's some serious saltyness from reviewers, regarding the fact that they didn't get their hands on it early.

I personally give Destiny an 8 (I just hit level 26 about 5 minutes prior to writing this, and have dabbled in both PVE & PVP). The game just oozes quality at every angle. The art direction is phenomenal, from the gear, to the environments, the emblems...everything. It lacks in Story, community / group features (communication etc ) as well as being content light.

You need to have someone comfortable to play with, where you can just relax and farm / get geared. It is repetitive, but I personally found it enjoyable. The potential from Destiny is immense, and I look forward to the coming months and expansions / potential future sequel.

I'm kinda starting to feel sad about Bungie.

They put so much into it yet the game fails at its core.

Well, if Final Fantasy 14 can do it they sure can.

Destiny: A Wave Reborn

whoa, you like Destiny?

not cool. you're not cool anymore

lmao.

im going to just link this thread anytime anyone posts positives reviews to any other shooter in existence.

Titanfall? All you do is run around in circles and shoot things. Terrible game.

Call of Duty? Ha. What so you are going to go run around in circles and shoot things for the next month? Terrible game. Single player is basically " go here, kill everyone in your way, get item / kill guy "

should be fun

That's interesting. I wonder what the opportunity to play their older, better games will inspire Bungie to do with the Destiny IP going forwards.

I wonder if they'll weep as they take down a Scarab in Halo 3, and see the opportunities they missed.
We can only hope.

edit: Wouldn't the fact that you hate shooters just lessen how much value people should give your impression?

Yes, of course it would. It makes sense, though, because Destiny is watered-down to appeal to the widest audience possible, including those that don't like "those darned shooter games".

I am actually enjoying Destiny but completely understand the legitimate complaints of it feeling hollow and repetitive. Not to mention the story/lore is a bad joke (so far).

However having now shipped over half a billion dollars worth of product of an under 80% metacritic title Activision-Blizzard's marketing department must be congratulated. I don't think ANY publisher has EVER embargoed reviews till PAST the street date of a game and gotten away with it. In those terms Destiny is an unmitigated financial success.

Had they allowed reviews prior to release there is no WAY the game would of sold as well as it did. Everyone's worst fears post-beta (that we will be doing the same shit we did in the beta for the next 20-30 hours) have been confirmed.

Marketing deception/fuckery for the win!

Are you making a judgement from a video or did you actually play the game? That's pretty commonly regarded one of the best "boss" fights ever.

I've played it multiple times.

It's awful. It's epic, it's wonderful in context. But as far as gameplay goes, it's a low point of the Halo series for me.

Same. I know they couldn't have really expected this. But on the other hand they've already sold a shit ton of copies based on over talking their game... and another portion largely on their name and catalog of past works.

Because, mechanically, it is Halo.

People are mad because it lacks the narrative quality that Halo had, PvP is a mess, and the content in several areas is wash, rinse, repeat.

This was not the Bungie that existed a decade ago (hell, even up until 4 or 5 years ago). Which is sad, because it feels as if they have lost a lot of personality since then.

I don't know... I think that Destiny is a victim of its own hype... The game deserves at least a 7/10. I think that some of the publications giving it a 5/10 are being unfair to the game.

I look forward to slaying scarabs again.

On the topic of bullet spongey big bosses...Lol.

You guys do know you aren't forced to shoot it till it is dead with the Hornet, right?
You've got options and if you know what you are doing you can kill it a lot faster so it is hardly a bullet sponge boss.

This doesn't make any sense to me.

BioShock Infinite metascore 94
http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-3/bioshock-infinite

Destiny metascore 74 (and maybe lower)
http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-4/destiny

I played both and I haven't finished Destiny yet. But so far Destiny is just such a better game and a better shooter to me... I feel like a lot of Destiny scores are overly negative because people don't think it lives up to the hype and the glory that were the Bungie Halo games.

And yeah the unbalanced PvP is just broken and not fun. But Bioshock doesn't even have PvP...

i didnt think it would live up to the hype at all, but thought that massive AAA game will end up sitting at least on 80, kinda suprising.

be interesting to see what kind of sticking power the game has into 2015

It is funny that Bungie said one reason they bought the company back was so they could move away from Halo.
