Witcher trilogy was a huge success because of its story and atmosphere ( lets be honest the rpg elements and combat were kinda shallow ) and the reason its story was so great was because it comes from a book

Game writers never match book writers so game developers should try and create more games based on books , there are so many great examples







its the only way we could get really great stories these days

yes but its also very complex , it would be very hard to be made into a tv series or a game , the only book that i can think of thats more complex is the silmarillion

I have always wondered why they don't do this. Like any of the big published authors are infinitely better than a video game writer. And these can probably be had cheap if it hasn't been made into a movie or TV show.
 
I mean sure, a game based on The Way of Kings, or Red Rising would be cool.

But I think you are downplaying the importance of simply having more good writers in gaming.
The Witcher games are basically non canon sequels to the books. Yes, the writers had an extensive world, lore and pool of characters to pull from, but a big reason the story in the games resonated with people was still because the writers at CDPR managed to tell compelling original stories with them.

Hollywood has given us plenty of examples in recent years of how cool pre-established IP can easily be turned into a turd when you put the wrong people in charge.
 
They will still have to dumb down story and nuance to be usable in a video game.

Best part about The Witcher 3 is lore entries that you can read to get a very good idea about the characters. Then you can relate with whatever they do.

Outside of that, quest stories tend to be serviceable. No need for a book writer for those.

Sure. Jump straight into gardens of the moon (book1 of chronological releases). Be warned that the writing style is kinda heavy, and it's completely normal to be lost completely for the few dozen pages because so much shit gets thrown at you and the POV characters shift rapidly

i dont think it need major changes, it only need someone with the balls to do it, about the ending, i agree, but tbf King said to not continue once he got to the Tower door XD

My ending would be Jake, Eddie, Suzana and Oy meeting at NY and Roland leaving his weapons at the door and going back to Calla to spend the rest of his days with Rosalita, he already saved the tower and killed the King, no need to go inside

Licensing and rights are major hurdles for most studios when it comes to book adaptations. It's not a worthwhile investment when the alternative is to hire a writer and create something entirely new without having to pay a long term recurring fee.
 
Give me a couple of turn-based tactical combat games based on the awesomely violent Phoenix Force book series.
For each game the individual missions would consist of the key combat scenarios from half of the range of books. About 25 missions per game to include the entirety of the series.

Alternatively, read books. Enjoy the stories there. Play games. Enjoy the stories there. Watch film/TV. Enjoy the stories there.

My preference is for people who understand the medium to come up with stories for the medium.

Mike Flanagan is making a TV Series for Amazon. Pretty sure King is working with him on it, making changes so the adaptation works better.

I just hope for no race swap like they did in the movie ( that i didnt watched ), story wont work If they swap things.

Elric would be great in a video game but it would have to be rated Mature. Never see his name mentioned anywhere and one of the 1st examples of having a sentient weapon that I can think of in literature.

In the same vein I don't understand why disney doesn't hire Jonathan Hickman to write a movie for them. He's only written some of their most popular books this millennium

Its beautiful. Honestly I could make it into my wallpaper. What kind of wood is it if you don't mind sharing, and was it custom made?
I'm very envious and would love to have a room like this; gaming station in one corner, multiple grand bookshelves collectibles/trinkets displayed in glass showcases etc.
I've been living remote and moving from place to place for education/training/work 10+ years. Haven't planted any roots anywhere since its futile.

Tell me you also have an equally magnanimous reading chair? Share a pic?

Only the original trilogy and the Twins trilogy is worth reading.

If you like Raistlin only buy Soulforged and Dragons of the Hourglass Mage. Never bothered with Brothers Majere.
 
I mean, Firefly/Serenity is an obvious choice for a game setting that is cheap to license and yet his idea never even crossed the mind of developers. Same goes for any modern Discworld game.

But yeah, as with The Witcher there is so many basically unused settings that can be transformed to great games with already good mechanics written in the books: Wheel of Time, Dune (I mean actual Herbert's Dune and not Funcom's travesty), Discworld, Hyperion... Hell, even more grounded works are perfect for games, I would've love to see proper faithful AAA game about Sherlock Holmes or seafaring adventure based on Treasure Island.

Some books do end up adapted eventually, even without copyrights (Halo says hi to Ringworld!), but I do think that the industry in general is not very literate and that's a huge part of the current culture problem within it.

Hey, thank you! I appreciate that. No, not custom made, these belonged to a school, it was a set of 4+2, bought 4 of them in auction but couldn't get the others. Made of oak, down here in Argentina we call them "Thompson-style" since it's a copy of UK Harris Lebus' Thompson (which in time was a copy of the US Globe Wernicke modular bookshelf). I got one original Wernicke from 1910, one Lebus original from 1940 and 5 copies which cannot be adjusted. Always wanted to have a room with these bookshelves and enough books to fill them, unfortunately I work in IT so all of my books are inside a Kindle so I use them for glassware display, books and games. I got some collectibles but nowhere enough to fill one. I have seen some really nice reading chairs, however I haven't bought one yet. For the time being I got them in different rooms, eventually I want to setup a nice cozy reading spot.

I personally find the Kingpriest Trilogy the best one, it goes at length explaining how the kingpriests degenerated, how the true one took power and then was corrupted as well, how the wizards were expelled from the towers, the truce and the Cataclysm. Just remembering the narration about the destruction of the Tower of Losarcum gives me goosebump 20 years later. And it does a good effort at matching many facts that appeared during the Twins trilogy. After the Kingpriest the Ergoth Trilogy is my second favorite one, it's really not connected to the rest of the timelines but it's an awesome narration about how some farmer in a remote location starts getting lucky after saving some dwarves until he literally becomes the best warrior in the realms.
