7.5

Devil Kings is a solid button-mashing action game that isn't afraid to have a little fun at the expense of its characters. The gameplay is nothing new, but it's simple and satisfying enough that you'll want to stick with it for awhile to unlock the extra characters and collect all the items in the game. If you're a fan of Dynasty Warriors but are looking for something outside the realm of ancient China, you'll definitely have a blast with Devil Kings.

But...but 1up said 8.5 >_<

Solid score from gamespot, in anycase. Fans of this type of game should buy it, everyone else should avoid it like the plague.

EDIT: And yes, I've played a good deal of it.

Yup that's pretty much the rule for any DW game... be interesting to see if 99 rises above that.

DW5, the most refined and polished entry in the series, gets a 6.8, while a game that apes Samurai Warriors wholesale and changes some names gets a 7.5?

Get over yourself, Devil Kings is vastly superior than Dynastry Warriors 5.

The gameplay is same, but DK has better visuals, more style, better animation, more visceral looking action, and as a great sense of style and humor in it's anime and CG cutscenes.

EDIT: I played Sengoku Basara, but I assume (other than some name changes) the games look/play the same.

"You can choose where you want to go next while you're on the map screen, as long as it's adjacent to a territory you own. You'll then engage in a battle at the contested stage, and if you win you'll take over that territory. Sometimes you can battle for multiple territories in a single mission..."

oh, I see they ripped off their competitors in the best way! EMPIRES MODE FROM THE GET GO!?!

Wait just read this:

The only problems with the visuals in Devil Kings are the heavy fog and the frustrating camera. The draw distance in the game is pretty short, and often whole groups of enemies will pop in and out of view as you move on the battlefield. This is somewhat excusable, since you'll mainly be focused on what's happening in your immediate vicinity.

Shhhhiiiiiiitttt.

Say what you will about DW5, but the pop in aspect is practically removed.

HOLY SHIT I DIDN'T KNOW THIS BEFORE... I WAS ALREADY GONNA PURCHASE THIS BUT THAT SEALS IT... I LOVE EMPIRE MODE!!!!!

Are there item/skill modifiers in this? Steeds? Ah you collect items on the field.... it doesn't say anything about whether the other territories every attack yours though... like in Empires, nor does it say if the other territories have rulers who are trying to expand their areas, etc... DW4: Empires was really cool in that regard. Trading for items, termporary alliances, etc...

Yea, I doubt it's as good in that respect. I like Capcom cheese, though. DW5 was pretty boring, pretty quick even though they fixed a lot of their errors. May be a try before I buy title.

I got bored with the DW series so quick, but Sengoku Basara sounds like an interesting alternative. If it goes for like 2000yen here in Tokyo, I'll pick it up. (So much games I want to pick up at discounted prices these days...)

I've played both, and DW 5 is way better than Sengoku Basara IMO (I don't know what changes they made to the US version). The pop-up was a major issue, and the gameplay and maps just felt very shallow. Gets major pluses for a few interesting characters and moves, but I went right back to DW5. Fans of DW will probably enjoy it though, although I didn't find much long term interest in the game.

In Sengoku Basara there's many item/skill modifiers.
Like at least 6 dozen of them.

The territories on map are divided by colors.
Every one of them has a general and some have subordinates even.
At start, you get to pick between the ones around your color.

Once you return to the select screen after taking over a territory, crossed swords icons will appear on the others.
That represents battles between the other generals.
Winners take over and their colors expand on the map.
Then you get to pick the next places that are connected to your color.

Characters have 6 weapons and gain new special moves after reaching a certain level.
That's in the Japanese version. Dunno if it still applies for Devil Kings.

Wow they really did pinch a good amount of stuff from DW:Empires... well since Koei seems to NOT be listening to me and bringing out a DW5:Empires I'll have to take this as a substitute.

Note though that I was suggesting Sengoku Basara, not Devil Kings. :D

From the media available to see, the conversion feels something like what becomes of popular anime series when localized in N/A.
But this has more ditched and messed up elements.

What Devil Kings keeps from SB are basically character models, moves
and territory conquering concept.

Other changes:
-Less playable characters
-Awful dub
-Other story
-Changed look/feel of levels
-Some devil looking enemy soldiers
Also going from colorful and bright to dark in some areas.

For the gameplay alone, it should be similar though.
