Devil May Cry 3 IGNPS2 review.

The Japan version is easier.

However, the US version also as one higher difficulty mode.

Only Vergil and 2-play co-op is "playable"

No Lady.

I say go with the US version.

I honestly can't relate to what the hell Mark or Greg talk about when they say the game is "impossible."

Easy mode in US version of DMC3 is as hard as Zone of the Enders 2 on normal. That's the best I can put it.

I dont think either of us said it was "impossible"--it's certainly possible, just horribly, annoyingly frustrating.

Would you mind telling me what's so frustrating with a game that has both visual and auditory telegraphed attacked enemies? When you see those hell lusts (those red ones) come near Dante, make a distinct growl and do a quick hop backwards, what do you think they are going to do? Give Dante a kiss? No, they are attacking him? What do you think those huge White ones are going to do when they Do that distinct growl right before they teleport, oh thats--right, teleport infront of Dante and attack him. The only time you wouldn't notice that if you're busy mashing Triangle like no tomorrow.

I was saying the same stuff when NG came out and all these reviewers were bashing it for it's difficulty. Why do you think there is so much DMC3 combo footage or no-hit run throughs on Dante Must Die mode online? .

DMC3 may be hard, but you actually get better at it. That's a sign of true challenge, not just a frustrating game. Players go from dying several times on mission 1 to beating DMC3 and then not having any trouble with any action game from that point on. That's how it worked when I beat Ninja Gaiden.

I think you gave this game more of a "unfair" appeal, as to opposed to a hard but fair appeal that it truly has.

Shinobi was fuckin cheap. Bottomless pits, enemies didn't have telegraphed attacks, they would just come in and slash at you with really no visual or auditory clue etc. And your own fuckin sword ate at your life. Not to mention the game lacked any visual or gameplay depth as DMC3/Ninja Gaiden.

Also a game where the camera was harder to control than the actual combat.

Look dude, I was thrilled when you gave DMC3 a bad score (yes I'm a Ninja Gaiden fanboy) but that was before I played it. To give DMC3 a "DMC2-esque" score when DMC3 is more or less the best action game there is on PS2 at this point seems kind off odd.

And what stopped you from doing the

L1,L2,R1,R2 Rotate Analog Stick secret to unlock Super Dante THAT'S EVEN WRITTEN in the game manual...=/

Also, FYI--when each secret mission is replayed (which you can do being that the game has a mission select mode, as to where you can orb farm to death and buy like 90 restorative items) you get a yellow orb instead of a blue orb fragment. Talk about infinite continues...

I don't know man, you gave DMC1 a 9 (as did many others), and I felt that game was trash for some reason. However, DMC3 is just so much easier to play with faster camera, better controls, more responive etc.

It might be all the days of playing Ninja Gaiden, but I literally think--that DMC3 is easier than DMC1.

How many times did we all die against Phantom in DMC1 on normal? My point exactly.

DMC3 seemed Capcom's way of pure fan service to all those who beat DMC1.

Can you personally tell me that those who beat DMC1 are going to have much trouble with DMC3? No, not at all.

Just like Greg from gamespot said, if he DID ACTUALLY PLAY DMC1, he woudl have known that the "way to approach" DMC3 is exactly same. Realize the situation, find a pattern, attack--evade and rinse and repeat. That's how DMC1 worked, and that's how DMC3 worked as well. It's not, run up to something hack hack hack, slash slash slash like you think, rather it's more strategic. And again, to those that beat DMC1/Ninja Gaiden (the two hardest action games) they will be fine.

The gameplay mechanics are the same. And I really think you should have made that clear in your review (which you didn't.)

Those who were put off by DMC1's difficulty aren't probably looking foward to or even care about DMC3, but to those that beat it and enjoyed (judging by the sales and hype--I'm sure those were many) DMC3 is the perfect progression in challenge for your common DMC1 and Ninja Gaiden fan. But it appears Greg would have given this game a 9+ if it wasn't for the steep challenge, and probably you as well, but the funny thing 9+ is more of a closer that the game seemed to deserve. DMC1 was a damn hard game, so DMC3 is as well. It's not like Capcom is trying to hide anything. And I'm pretty sure those who are going to plop down the money for DMC3, know about DMC1's massive challenge.

"The conclusion is that Devil May Cry 3 crosses the line that separates challenging from cheap. Charismatic and brazen to a fault, it is something of a return to form, but denies the gamer an honest challenge and the eye-opening lack of balance results in a sometimes-electrifying game that isn't especially fun to play."

Having not played DMC3 yet I still find these complaints about difficulty to be astonishing... I'm definitely gonna have to see what all the bitching and moaning is about....

i say this with all of one review under my belt, but i wonder whether a reviewer on a deadline experiences difficulty the same way a general gamer does. it's difficult to relish frustration when you have to finish something for work. and you don't really have the option of putting a game down and coming back to it when you feel like -- you have to keep at a difficult spot, and it can wear on you disproportionately.
