Ep. 11
Well, I mean, this is the dead end with no turning back, it's hot garbage. Kishi shouldn't touch any property ever again and I can't wait to see badly he messes up dangan Ronpa.

I made a huge oversight, if it really were supposed to be "Jack" then I'm guessing it should've been katakana. I'm assuming then that those who know Japanese should at least know that shouldn't have been written straight as "Jack Frost." Then I see what you're saying.

=P

edit: Now that I think about it, how did they know to write down Jack Frost? Just by watching the show and seeing it look kinda like one? But if they knew enough to recognize the demon, how would they not know of Black Frost also. Was it by looking at the ED? Then that should've raised its own flags.

I'm not sure what you're talking about. They're professional subtitles translated from the Japanese script. Whoever did it probably translated it as Jack Frost because of lack of familiarity with the source material to know that there's another demon with a similar name.

Devil Survivor 1 the animation is Kishi's next project after Dangan Ronpa, oh boy. Only good thing bout' it will be seeing Mari and Naoya animated.

Kishi's next project should be retirement.

Actually it's a full CG adaptation of Arpeggio of Blue Steel. Airs this Fall.

[/spoiler]

The first part of my post was pretty self explanatory, I thought. I made a mistake, my brain and whatever I remember from Japanese in high school failed me.

As for the second part, it's just me thinking of ways to explain how the mistake came about, while accounting for the idea that it shouldn't have been written as "Jack," from the vantage point of the translator. I didn't know that these subtitles are translated directly from the script when writing that.

What should've raised red flags was when they said Jack Frost was stronger than Baal and I think it was Cerberus or Suzaku they also listed. No he's not, Jack Frost sucks :p

The translators are a joke here, but I'm trying not to blame them that much, since it is obvious that they are not familiar with the source material.

Also, it's true that Black Frost is one of the strongest demons in the game. Here it is a lvl 80 demon, while Byakko is around 50~ and Suzaku is around lvl 70~. Even Metatron is around lvl 74, I think.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure that we're locked to the Restorer ending now, btw.

Uh, what is Kishi known for that makes him so reviled?

I can't think of how they could've done the game any better under such stringent limits. I like it for what it is, and again, it's still the best SMT anime yet(not saying much, mind you).

The previous subs implied they at least played the game, what with the 'have a nice wheeeee' bit straight from the game.

I liked the 11th episode quite a bit. Was disappointed that
mostly everyone died
but whatever.

LOL @ the jack frost / black frost error.

Episode 12 summary:
Everyone but Hibiki and Yamato dies
So the lack of activity in this thread indicate this was a garbage adaptation? XD Watch the ending will link to the new game's plotline and they tease you To be continued in Devil Survivor 2: Break Record =P

Eh, everyone loved it at the start and I think they gradually lost interest once they realized
how rushed everything was with one MASSIVE bloodbath along the way.

I still enjoy it for what it is. And with a finale like that, Episode 13 better be hot fire.

ED was perfect this time.

Episode 12 – Sunday of Realization - I

Whoever penned the story is amazing this episode and all my emotions.
The second it started and Yamato was like hes going to fight Alcor and then the deadface clips of both, got me to tears. Worst was when Alcor was all speaking of Yamato as his first friend. Friends fighting always gets to me. Flashy episode, good story, and just really tought on the heart, teared up all through the final moments and then after it closed out still, my Daichi :( and Hibiki having to leave them all behind and then to fight Yamato, why :(

They took some serious liberties with the game, but for the better IMO.

Episode 12

Awesome episode. They took some massive liberties but I don't want to see the same story that I already have in the game anyway.

The fight was decent, and Makoto suckzzz.
Daichi and Io's deaths were good though. Dat Void... :(

I'm hoping next episode Hibiki pulls out Lucifer so he can save the world a second time. Byakko is too overplayed at this point.

Btw has anyone seen Yamato's new design in Break Record? He looks pretty different...and not as douchey.

I like the Cerberus/Byakko dynamic going at the moment.

Expecting some major demons next episode. Maybe Metatron and Lucifer.

For me, it feels both rushed and awkwardly paced. I really don't like the bloodbaths. And sometimes the drama just feels...silly. I don't want to immolate the show, but it's forgettable and I can't recommend it in a "hey! this show has an interesting concept/has these interesting features, check it out" sort of casual recommendation way.

And, someone else who doesn't like Makoto! Huzzah!
those who want to satisfy their Miyuki Sawashiro needs, check out the JP dub of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. >=) It's not super obvious it's her though. For example, Milla Maxwell and Himeko Inaba from Kokoro Connect sound similar to Makoto here, but Twilight Sparkle sounds noticeably different.

Makoto is OK.
Her sacrifice was lame though. Actually she seemed almost out of character in this episode compared to her game version.

I wish I knew. At least he only has one more episode to gripe about!

It's just bad. The pacing has been horrid, the characters are barely developed at all, it just throws on segment after another of the game scenario at viewers without bothering to build anything up or create any sense of good narrative or tension. The fights are mostly awful. The only good fights which I enjoyed watching would be the ones in ep7 (I think? When they're all in the Nagoya branch...) and the one from ep12 this week. Most of the time in the rest of the episodes there's zero melee or choreographed combat, just boring copy and paste "masses" being spammed at a boss which barely moves. It's not satisfying as a stand lone show, it's not satisfying as an adaptation, it's basically.... a badly made show which seems to only serve a purpose of reminding people that Devil Survivor 2 exists so the upcoming 3DS release might sell more.

Serious question: could you think of a better way to fit all those characters and all those days/Septentriones into 13 episodes?

Also kind of weird that Alcor is basically
Doc Ock.

Yes. If they're going to give the MC a name and a specific personality to begin with, I would split the first 3-4 episodes up into the first two days from different perspectives. Make every faction feel like they consist of main characters right from the start who have their own backgrounds, hopes and ambitions, etc. Build a proper foundation so the later events mean something. I would cut out all the pointless garbage like scenes of cannon fodder getting blown away by the bosses, or the elaborate hacking scene, or some of the more drawn out conversations which focus too much of characters who are already fleshed out. Give that time to strengthening the right of the cast instead or building up the main events better and more exciting.

There's just so much wrong with how the series is written and directed, it's not really hard for anyone to think of tons of improvements both great and small which could make for a more entertaining show than this dreadful crap we got.

The anime does feel rushed but it has some charm. Daichi's monologue when he was disappearing was very powerful. ;_;

Also, Makoto proved to be a complete moron. It was a nice touch how at the end credits there was no one but Yamato and Hibiki

Looks like Yamato gets Satan. Lucifer for Hibiki now, plz. But he might just get Kohryu or something.

Last episode was great. I like how they went with a original story line compared to the game.

The anime had its slow parts, and some stuff could have been better (character development more than anything), but I've enjoyed the show a lot. It was a solid representation of the Devil Survivor 2 universe.

Devil Survivor 2 The Animation went out on a good note. Although expected, I really liked the ending:

The Yamato vs. Hibiki battle was great. I liked how they implemented the demon transfer thing from the game, and Hibiki getting all the demons from the other characters to fuse Lucifer was awesome.

It was also cool to see how everyone went on to pursue their dreams/achieve their goals, therefore helping to slowly change the world so the same ordeal doesn't happen again.

As I mentioned before, I really liked this anime. Its main problem IMO was the lack of character development, and some stuff progressed slow. On the other hand, I liked how the story and paths taken were different from those in the game, the SMT fan service was great: the demons looked awesome, the post apocalyptic world was a good representation of the Devil Survivor world and the anime had very good art and music.

Pretty happy with it overall. Now I can't fucking wait for Devil Survivor 2 Break Record.

Now THAT'S a
fusion battle.

Extreme Law VS Extreme Chaos. I expected Metatron, since Lucifer was in Persona 4, but I'm okay with that.

Hibiki's a Gaian. Confirmed!

Expected the rebirth ending. Ah well.

I hope we get an SMT anime like this again, hopefully more fleshed out. The foundation is very well set in place by this. I'd love to see this team do Devil Summoner or maybe a core game.

And Hibiki was a great character.

appears at all during DS2? I can't remember ever summoning that demon during any of my playthroughs

And yes, I prefer Atlus USA's translation for that one, since this is before
his fall as an angel
so they should be differenced.

Other than that, looks good (I'm still finishing watching the episode, but wanted to get out this first)

I don't think either of those demons appear in DS2. It's a T-rated game, and Yamato's would be an instant M.

Yamato's demon does appear in the game. I know because I used it a few times since his level is so high.

Now the other one? A bit random.

Anyway, can't believe they went with
the Triumphant
ending. Doesn't feel quite right, tbh.

I liked the closure of the series. Not the best I've been but not the worst like how the anime elitists ITT paint this series to be. a Solid 7.5/10 for me. I'll probably get the DS 2 remake when it comes out.

Hibiki is still a wimp though.

Considering the ending, I think it worked best.

How else would they show everyone alive and well?

I also thought the Yamato bit was a nice touch.

So why did:
Yamato had a scar during the epilogue?
. Didn't quite get that part. I assume it was a "memento" from the battle.

Episode 13 – Sunday of Realization - II (end)

The start was fairly wordy but when it got going it just never let go. I was wholly impressed with the whole fight, demons, visuals, and even the words and character motivations. Honestly, the ending was literally something that I would have penned if I had been writing this anime, it was a like a fantasy come true of sorts.
The friendship speeches and Hibiki's heartfelt words and desires and then Yamato making the realization that he too did think of Hibiki as a friend even if he wouldnt admit worked well in making the scene directly after that even more impactful. It really fit in with the context they had setup in the past for Hibiki Daichi interactions, Alcor and Hotsuin, Alcor and Hibiki, and Hibiki and Hotsuin. All Hotsuin needed was a hug, and it worked.

And one of the minor but really good things there for me
Keita returned and even got an new personality, lol. Liked him even more in the camera scene then how he was before. How did people dislike him?
.

Definitely holding and keeping the minority opinion, but for me and what I value in anime, I think this was a really well done one. The survival theme throughout the series and then being tied back into with a flashy explosive finale and surprising epilogue made for an enjoyable time
recalling the bonds of friendship that drove Hibiki forward, and then having it be a tangible aspect yielding actual results, is something I like to see
. Most of the enjoyment outside of the serious portions were the dialogue moments with the initial characters and then the major players (Alcor and Yamato). I will say, others could have had a bit more time as we just never got much time to connect to them.

8/10, would buy and will definitely get the game. Take Your Way and BE are really memorable songs and instrumental versions used throughout enhanced the anime and gave it character.

Good write-up DTL. The reason why people dislike Keita is because he's an asshole in the game, but his anime version was too short-lived to really dislike him or vice-versa.

Do you plan to get the DS game and play it or go straight to the 3DS version when it comes out?

So Lucifer hugged Satan and saved the world. Thank you Based Polaris.

Anyway, great ending. Predictable, but well-done. They followed the True Restorer ending of the game even though the events leading up to it were different. The anime was very lacking in character development for most of the cast (though since I played the game, didn't bother me as much), and because of that some characters didn't show some of their other sides (like Ronaldo is a cool dude here, in the game he was hypocritcal dick. Though that can be attributed to the anime changing events from the game too.) but I still thought it was pretty good and I'd give the anime an 8/10 overall. It's better than Persona 4's anime (which had a pretty rushed ending, even in episode 26 which came out later).

I recommend people who haven't played the game to get Devil Survivor Break Record whenever it's out. There are enough differences between the anime and game to make it worthwhile and there's a brand new scenario too. It's also just a generally fun game.

I don't think either of those demons appear in DS2. It's a T-rated game, and Yamato's would be an instant M.

Satan is in DS2. Even Arioch. Lucifer is in too but not Helel.

Clocking in, clocking out. It had moments that I liked, such as
the desperation in Hibiki's inability to reach Yamato (though the substance of what he says comes off as bone-headed most of the time), Yamato's final words to Hibiki, and his final words in the limo
but felt too contrived.

So this must be setting up Yamato for Break Record.

Garbage ending for a garbage show. I can't believe the finale was so fucking BORING. Wait, actually I can, because the entire series has been so fucking boring. Boring animation, boring shot composition, bad art, terrible colors, boring script, boring direction. Every moment was just waiting for the crap to be done so it'll be over for good.

Crap series.

I watched the series the whole way through out of mostly curiosity (never played the game). The 7-day structure was an interesting concept but the writers failed to tell a good story in the 13 episodes that they had to work with.

Overall the series was pretty underwhelming. Glad for how it ended but the episode itself was as boring as the rest of the show.

Persona had 26 episodes and DS2 was better than it with only 13.

Persona wasn't really pleasing for the SMT fan. That shit had like 5 demons or a very low number. I only remember Beelzebub.
