So is this series any good?

I watched the first 3 but havnt gone back to it.

Seemed ok....kinda like pokemon.

It's better if you have played Devil Survivor 2, since some of the events in the animation are kinda hard to follow and there's not much character development compared to the game.

If you haven't played it, I'd still give it a try since I think it looks great and the atmosphere is really cool.

Episode 9

Fucking awful episode. The pacing was all over the place, they didn't set anything up properly, and it was just a terrible rushed attempt to adapt the basic events of that day in the game. Really disappointing. The entire Shiva/Kama scene was meeeeeeeeeeeeh too. I think in this particularly case, they actually had more screen time and animation in the game than the anime. Fffffff. Zzzzzzzz.

Was it really a bad attempt to adapt the events, though? Of the four major things they cut out, one of them was pointless because it already happened, and the other three were very video game-y things.

Otome's death clip is irrelevant, since she's already dead.

Shiva suddenly turning into a bunch of Pyro Jack's was pretty pointless and only there to add another battle.

Battling a bunch of demons while Hinako is dancing was also there just to add another battle.

The entire battle with Alioth also seemed to just be there to add another battle. It was an immobile Septentrione in a destroyed city with presumably no survivors after the crash and toxins. In the game the tower was already gone, so the void would eventually come in and wipe out all of Hokkaido anyway, including Alioth.

I enjoyed it. Rushed, but they handled what counted. I don't envy this show's staff having to cram such a big story into 12 episodes.

I envy the staff for being able to continuously get one project after another lined up when all they ever make are boring and mediocre shows which feed off the fan goodwill of what they're adapting. Kishi is a fucking hack.

OK episode. I liked the Alcor part in the beginning though it took up like 7 mins. I didn't like how the Shiva/Kama scene was all serious compared to the game where it was actually comical. Other than that, kinda by the works.

POWER OF FRIENDSHIP!!!!!!!!!!!

edit. wow. lots of people liking this episode. The only thing I liked was
how the conflict in this episode with Io bolstered the MC and Yamato's friction.
Didn't like this episode.

That episode packed in the feels.

I love this show's animation quality, off the charts.

Someone please hand these guys Nocturne. Or better yet, Soul Hackers.

Awesome episode. This was a good example of adding to the game and the whole thing with Io was much improved. Though the REACHING OUT scene with the Jpop was hella cheesy.

Also some cool demon fighting. And next ep or maybe the one after
they'll be fighting Yamato :)
. I like how no matter how many times he gets rejected Yamato can still crack his smug smile.

Episode 10

This show seriously blows. Yet I can't stop watching it. I dunno why. Airi isn't even in the show much anymore. I should stop, but I can't bring myself to look away. The action is the worst part of the show. It's so poorly put together. There's no tension, there's no excitement, the animation is ugly, there's no choreography. It's just boring stuff happening on screen. The only thing which salvaged this episode is Kamiya's performance as the main character. I think he does a great job, but everything else about this adaptation is shoddy as fuck. Lol.

Kishi is a terrible director and he should really feel bad about ruining one adaptation after another. It's amazing how visually boring and ugly the show can be most of the time, even when using really iconic demon designs from SMT. Seriously smh. Lol.

I haven't played the game, but I like how Alcor is portrayed. So charismatic.

Wow this had to be one of the best episodes that has aired all season. It had quite a bit of all that I love in fiction in this and then gave lots of pretty shiny and colorful visuals and even a nice vocal song. Breakfest scene was an excellent start to the events and then all the other emotions.
I was actually anguished when Daichi saw the dead face clip on the phone and threw it on the ground. That action really gave the whole event way more feeling and weight. I didnt expect to tear up from Nitta but then realizing what was happening and then how all the characters would be did get to me a bit. But then well, praise Hibiki for miracles happen when you believe. I dont know it was just all really unexpected considering how they have been unable to avoid dead face clips in the past. And Nitta actually being useful finally

My favorite line had to be when Hotsuin was like he's mine and Daichi must be commended, his whole scene was memorable.

I have conflicting feelings about this episode

The first 18 minutes or so were awesome, but that part at the end was a bit... awful? Well, not really awful, just not that good, mainly because of putting a song in the middle of dialogue, since the song isn't that bad per se.
Okay, I lied a bit, I did cheered up a bit when Hibiki was hugging Io. What can I say? I'm a softie for those kinds of scenes

Also, Kingmaker, anyone? Is either that or Restorer, but I doubt that they will go in that route, tbh.

Just saw episode 10. Amazing.
Was resigned to thinking Io was a goner. (Her fate reminiscent of Fred from the TV show Angel.)

My liking for the series took a dive after episode 8 but I'm back into it now.

On anime adaptions:

You could probably fit Digital Devil Saga into 26 episodes relatively easily, though you would probably need to exclude the various bonus bosses and sidequests. Nocturne, given its minimalist story and small cast, could probably fit in 13 episodes, but it might require a little rushing and sticking to the "vanilla" story, which means ignoring the Amala sidequest. Strange Journey you might be able to do in 13 episodes, but it would require cutting the sidequests and a lot of the fat in each sector (for example, Sector Bootes requires you make three, different visits to the Palace before you can fight the boss, and the events could probably be compacted into one visit instead).

A Raidou anime could also be fun, and maybe let us see the demons be used in a more "mundane" way in the sense of solving crimes and cracking cases, but I think they should make an original story for it, rather than adapting any one game.

26 eps for DDS seems a bit long to me. Both games are each 25 hours long but a lot of that is dungeon crawling...and really not that much happens in DDS1. I could see an adaption coming in at 13 eps, but maybe with some rushing.

Just saw the 10th episode. The summoning sequence was muuuuch better than the previous ones, and I liked the ending. Daichi was the best in this episode. He's useless as a demon summoner, but he has the guts to throw a fist at Yamato.

Episode 11

Aw shit they just killed off Hinako, Jungo, Fumi, and...Airi! duckroll am cry :( The ending is soooooo empty now.

Both Megrez and Benetnasch
killed off the most amount of characters...they were also the most dickish bosses in the game, save the last boss. I guess the writers realize how annoying those bosses were.

Also why did they
call Black Frost Jack Frost? -_-

Poor duckroll
Makoto > Fumi > everyone else
. I wonder if this adaptation would be handled better if there were more episodes.

All the best moments from the game were cut off. But I loved
Black Frost
, it was so random.

I think they thought it was Jack Frost. Natural mistake!

I enjoyed it, though they really have ripped the lever right off the train by this point.

At least we got an ED again!

I loved how
calm Fumi was. Dat Trumpeter. Most powerful summoner confirmed.

NOW they kill my favorite character? In the most stupidest way possible too. Jungo. :(

Man, this was such a disappointing adaption of the game. I almost don't feel like watching the last episode.

Quick question: is Devil Survivor 2: Break Record a sequel or just a port? If it's just a port, would it be worth it to play it knowing all spoilers of the story now?

Updated port with a new character and epilogue. So, yes.

Heck, the anime only covers one route, and a LOT of people die who don't in the game. Well, rather, you have the chance to save them.

For instance, there's a huge fight between Ronaldo and Yamato's faction which was totally taken out of the anime.

It's a port with a brand new scenario. But also this anime is only going to show one ending (game has multiple endings, and there's a "special" ending if you save everyone from dying), and almost all of the characters get like no character development here unlike the game because of the Fate events (which are like Social Links in Persona). There are also battles and some events that don't happen in the anime that do in the game.

The core plot is essentially the same but there are a lot of differences and missing things, and there's a new scenario, so it's definitely worth it to play the game even if you've watched the anime.

What surprising response people have? I cant be the only one that loved this episode. You alls even got like tons of flashy epic laser and beam blast action with explosions, dozens of demons spamming their best attacks, and that Hibiki/Hotsuin tension stuff, that doesn't make a bad episode, but a great one. First the Hibiki Daichi backstory thing going from their time as kids and then to high school was all sweet and what not
I thought it was even implying that Hibiki would wake up somehow and come save Daichi like Daichi saved him back in the day. He got tears in his eyes just thinking of Daichi even, superb job from the anime people, they know what makes a good anime

Then the episode finally did something I've been waiting oh so long for
Daichi finally got his chance to shine and it was worth the past episodes for . He even embodied the message of hope, after just believing so hard at that point in time and then getting my favorite non unique non deity demon even, Daichi Shijima FTW. More than makes up for the loss of Keita and all the weak scenes. He landed such a HUGE and important blow on the Septentrion

The music is also underrated, the OP song full version at the opening scene and then when BE cut on (the instrumental portion of it was so fitting and made that scene
With Alcor trying to step in
even more thrilling.

This is almost the same thing as the Megrez bloodbath, but worse. Deaths that weren't all that compelling. The only interesting one was Fumi, who was just like "screw it." But there was no drama in it, not even any humor, it's like a small talk conversation, you just move on with your day. The others characters did friendship-y type stuff as they took a bow. Hinako's death really irritated me; I really dislike that she died to begin with, and how she died too, considering that she lived past her first brush with death. And her final words, while very Hinako-ish, just seemed like such a weak way to go out. It's like she was tossed into a garbage bin. Same thing with Airi and Jungo; though I guess they referenced the whole Megrez protection thing, but the death still feels dumb.

Why kill everybody like this? What does it accomplish? It's not dying that bother me necessarily, but the execution. Maybe the show people just don't care. They probably haven't for a while, it's been a long time since I've been invested in this show. Have the writers sufficiently explained that friendship is important and have thus decided there's not much point in keeping around the other schlups outside of the main people? There's an unintended irony to that, considering the negative characterization of Yamato's stance. =P

Feels so rushed, unnecessary, just can't connect to the characters. Sometimes it wants to talk about friendship and do shonen anime stuff, other times it wants to be a slasher movie. This show is pretty bad.

That's supposed to Black Frost isn't it? I suppose it's nice that they decided to come up with a backstory for the MC. Feels sort of shoved in, but it's an effort.

Yeah I agree with this.
Whenever the characters died I was just like "OK". Keita was the biggest surprise for me because I wasn't expecting it plus the execution was good with the fake out.
Otherwise I'm feeling just as nonchalantly as Fumi, lolz.

Worst show ever. Not even going to bother writing about the remaining episodes now. Garbage show. Garbage direction. Garbage writing. Garbage translation too. Can't believe Crunchyroll got a major demon name wrong. Everything garbage. RIP.

Pretty sure they said Jack and not Ja-aku Frost...

So it's like all the SMT animes. Glad I never gave this turd a chance.

I don't think the length of the series is the main problem. It's just a lazy adaptation. The bad writing and bad direction doesn't even make great use of the 13 episodes they have. The pacing is all over the place, and the focus is all wrong. Just bad.

Sure you're not saying that because your waifu died? :p

I never played the original games, but the series seems decent, if a litter generic. All the deaths are keeping it from being truly boring though.

Marche90

That's the problem. In the game, at most, five people die in the end, and all the deaths were avoidable, so you were able to have 13 people in the end in certain endings.

I'll finish watching the series, but damn if I'm not disappointed.

I felt that some of the major events in this 11th ep were flat.

BUt the episode wasn't that bad.
But since i haven't played the game i dunno what i missed.

Why are you always so wrong about everything when you try to correct people? :p

Here it is right from the credits, the subs fucked up:

yfDtVQq.jpg

But that says Jack Frost doesn't it on the left? And I'm assuming the VA is on the right. Why was it written as Jack Frost there?

It would be weird to me because I don't play much if any SMT, but I thought Jack Frost was a low-mid tier powered demon.
That can't be a Jack Frost.
That being said, unless the subbers had no clue about SMT I would've thought it'd be smarter just to write in
------Black Frost
anyway.

Also, it's not like they're not supposed to kill off more characters (I've been anticipating it) but
in this episode it sucked big time.

No. Damnit. Where are the TRUE SMT fans. No one can get it right! じゃあくフロスト is Jyaaku (Evil) Frost. Jack Frost is ジャックフロスト. In the English version of the games, Jyaaku Frost is called Black Frost, to maintain the pun in the Japanese name. KNOW YOUR DEMONS! :(

...

I made a huge oversight, if it really were supposed to be "Jack" then I'm guessing it should've been katakana. I'm assuming then that those who know Japanese should at least know that shouldn't have been written straight as "Jack Frost." Then I see what you're saying.

=P

edit: Now that I think about it, how did they know to write down Jack Frost? Just by watching the show and seeing it look kinda like one? But if they knew enough to recognize the demon, how would they not know of Black Frost also. Was it by looking at the ED? Then that should've raised its own flags.
