Devil's Advocate: Why should I trust Nintendo Switch to be any different than Wii U?

I mean sure, the Wii U had set of excellent games. Most 1st party. And we know the Switch will get it's share as well.

But as someone feeling slightly burnt by the short lifetime and narrow library of the Wii U, how can anyone say with any certainty that the Switch will be any different?

How certain can you be that 3-4 years from now we won't have another 1 game year from Nintendo. Look at Wii U 2016 library.

Color me skeptical.

There is no certainty - just wait and see what they have to offer. You dont have to decide months before the launch.

WiiU was a lackluster system - but its not like they stopped providing games a year after its release. Many other companies would have dropped all WiiU support late 2013 - like Sony did on Vita when they realized the system tanked.

I give it the benefit of the doubt ONLY because of its mobile capabilities.....and I'm still skeptical. Been burned too many times by Nintendo.

Their handheld and home console development teams are now both working together on one platform. This in theory should mean far more games and more variety in their exclusives.

Switch also supports the latest engines like Unreal Engine 4 meaning getting ports is far more likely than on Wii U although they obviously won't get every multiplatform game.

Because all of their output is on one system. What you're suggesting is that Nintendo would just stop making games.

There is no reason to expect the moon. But since the switch is part handheld it is safe to expect some more Japanese suport and for it to share with some of the none intensive Japanese PS4 games. If you are expecting red dead redemption and battlefield you'll be disapointed hough.

Because the Wii U was competing for software with the 3DS, which necessitated resources for two Marios, two Mario Karts, two Zeldas, etc.

With a unified platform and development teams, 3DS winding down and mobile requiring fewer resources, Nintendo can bring the full brunt of their development power to the platform, which should result in a more packed schedule.

I mean you are basically getting games from the developpers of both Wii U and 3ds on the same console this time. You will get more games, don't worry.

You can't be certain. It's a gaming console. Next Thursday when they reveal it, decide if you like any of the games. If you don't, don't get it. You're under no obligation.

If you felt really burned by the Wii U and didn't identify with the games then absolutely don't buy a Switch, it's another Nintendo console.

If you liked Wii U and a few games but 4 years later feel your 300 dollars was wasted then you need to wait 2-3 years into the Switch lifespan to see how it pans out.

I don't play my Wii U that much but I'm very happy with some of the games on it and will absolutely be buying a Switch.

You shouldn't. You should wait until there are enough games on the system for your personal choice in buying the console. You should wait until you believe Nintendo has demonstrated that this is not another Wii U situation and then buy it.

How does one perform surgery on a rocket?

By enrolling in the Rocket Surgery Institute of course....

I like the idea of having all the handheld games playable on controller and on the TV without any hassle. I missed out on games is enjoy mostly cause of not wanting to bother with having to go get the handheld and or version of the game. Still a ton of Gameboy, advance, ds etc that I haven't even gone near.

I have tampered my expectation, but one reason would be the Switch is much less likely to be confused as a Wii peripheral than the Wii U.

This is the best answer.
I mean, it's a possibility, but at the same time there are such great positives.
I would lso add that the marketing has been 1000x better already - and they have only shown one trailer.

You shouldn't trust them at all. Wait until they prove themselves to you.

It's pretty simple.

I don't trust them. It's replacing the 3DS and Wii U and still don't trust them to deliver a modern, capable system. They have to prove it.

Switch doesn't have a useless gimmick.
Nintendo is combining all their games to 1 platform.
Nintendo has no backup console or handheld, they HAVE to make this thing succeed.
Hope.

Well here is what I see as an attractive traits over WiiU

- Better Portability

- Consolidated Focus

- New Online ecosystem and accounts

- Mass Produced and easy to work with chipset

- Lots of modern options and features

- Its basically the second coming of the Vita

You can't be certain, and no one is forcing you to buy in on day one. You're looking for reasons to make a purchase OP, but unless someone here works for Nintendo we can't give you what you're looking for. Be calm, wait for more information, and make a purchasing decision accordingly.

I mean, I enjoy my Wii U and have spent an obscene amount of money on games for it as I was one of those schmucks who thought that if I bought AAA games for Wii U, they'd keep coming, but Nintendo lost a lot of goodwill this generation. Stupid move after stupid move followed by another fascinatingly stupid move.

Now, I'm still a schmuck and I'll still probably buy a Switch on day one (to the detriment of my marriage, no doubt) but I'll at least do it knowing that the company from which I'm buying it is a shithead and they may fuck the whole thing up. Again.

Nintendo is so f*($.

You shouldn't OP. I'm picking up a switch with the expectation it is not much different than Wii U. If they exceed my expectations I'll be pleasantly surprised.

But if the Wii U wasn't worthwhile for you, by all means, wait and see. No one should expect anything more as of yet.

If you want to be cautious you can only take the wait and see approach.

The Switch is basically a WiiU that you can take outside, whether this will jive with people is anyone's guess.

The only way it will be the true successor to both WiiU and 3DS if it actually succeeds. If it bombs then Nintendo will just backpedal to its DS line or something of the like.

The only difference is Nintendo won't have to split their support over two platforms. So I expect:

1.5x the first-party support
Exactly the same anemic third-party support

Anything more is wishful thinking, imo.

Because the whole spiel from nintendo is different so far. they see way more confident in their product and seem to know where they want to go with it.

on the other hand, why trust anyone? just buy what excites you.

That shit is on you op.

I never trust Nintendo consoles. I wait a few years then decide. Doing the same with the switch.

Is it weird how people automatically assume they have to buy Switch right away based purely on trust. Like it's almost like idea of waiting and seeing how it pans out is not even an option...
