Kotaku (I know curse me) said that another wave of invites were sent out. Is this another one or are they just late to the news

Either way I didnt get in :(

I think a realistic bet would be Q3-Q4. Leaning towards Q4.

That is really pessimistic IMO. I am thinking June - July.

I just listened to the most recent IncGamers Diablo podcast. I know some have mentioned it before but it is really good especially when they have the Aussie (Azzure) that is kind of a game economy expert.

His theory is that they are going to do away with the runes as items and turn it into more of a mastery system that you can level up and an item that will permanently allow you to increase the level of one of your runes. I am definitely not doing justice to the discussion so I suggest you guys listen.

Starts at 38 minutes.

I beat the beta and it was fun and made me want the full game. However I have no idea why it took so many years to make? I'm guessing they would prototype, play it, scratch it all and start over..that or it was one of those things were assets just didn't hold up as years went by and they had to just keep updating and rebuilding from playtests. Either way It's cool and it's more Diablo and I can't complain but its not like "OMG this is why this took forever to come out. IT'S AMAZING"

You would have gotten an email. That's how I found out. The first clue that it was legit was that it was actually in my real email account, the one linked to Battle.net (as opposed to my "junk" Hotmail account, which is where I usually get those BS emails about WoW that I haven't played in about a year). And it never said "click here", it said "go log into battle.net".

I've downloaded it, but haven't played yet. Depends on what I'm doing the rest of the day.. Saturdays are always kind of up in the air for me.

A lot of us go into the Beta and did not get an email. We just found out by checking our bnet accounts.

I started up a Monk girl last night. She looks like a white Elena! Blizzard copies Capcom yet again!

...

>_>

*ahem*

They are pretty awesome. I think they are even more fun to play than the Demon Hunter. I love the combos and that AOE roundhouse!

Friend of mine got into this, so I got to run through the opening area and the first level of the cathedral last night.

Holy fuck I love the witch doctor. If I could have one super-power in real life it would be the ability to summon infinite bats that I then set on fire and shoot at my enemies.

All I know deep down is, whenever it finally releases, it'll be a few months too late compared to where I was expecting it to be. Gimme D3 now, grrr :(

I never thought myself that much of a graphics whore, but the more I play through the beta and enjoy its many offerings, the more I'm aware that I wish it was just a tad prettier (tech-wise. The art itself and the art direction is great).

I think the player characters could use a little higher fidelity. That said, the atmospheric effects are AMAZING.

I wish they would tone down the fog effects. I get that they're trying to make the woods feel eerie, but the current use of fog makes it feel like I'm running around in a giant gray box. The art is great, I just wish they'd make it stand out a little more; add some contrast.

Yeah I agree with this. There looks like a haze all over the screen. I thought my brightness was too high or something at first.

CONTRAST YES!

thats it!

even "dark" areas, it doesnt look dark it just looks.... grey haze, I don't know if my monitors gamma is waaay to high but I havent had this issue in other games, maybe make a mandatory gamma setting popup happen before you launch the game or something?

I kinda feel this way also, I'm guessing its just because they became the "The WoW Company" after WC3 hit (in 2002) and they had to pour so many resources in that, that pretty much anything and everything else got hardly more than a passing glance untill like 2007 ish?

I feel like SC2 and Diablo 3 are all coming 4-5 past the sweet spot, like SC2 in 2005 would have been "OMG AMAZING!", now its just, oh.... cool!, same with diablo 3 in 2008.

Could 6 million (or however many copies SC2 has sold) people's computers really have handled SC2 in 2005? SC2 is an absolutely huge graphical leap over Frozen Throne which came out in 2003.

Diablo 3 is not graphically impressive that I agree with. But as far as fun factor and mechanics are concerned, the beta doesn't give nearly enough to us for anyone to comment.

He's not talking about the graphics.

Ugh that thing is ugly. I don't get why people want to desaturate the game that much.

No wonder so many games are all brown or grey this generation...

I agree. That just looks... gross. By the way, is that font for damage, loot, and gold on the ground the same for everyone else?

My font shows up as what I believe is Arial, which looks out of place with the rest of the game.

Enjoying the beta.

In the event it helps anyone, could not stay connected to the battlenet servers for more than 5 minutes at a time with default settings on the 2wire modem AT&T gave me (time for a new DSL modem), which would kick me out of the game and into the title screen.

Changed the settings from "802.11 b/g" to "802.11 b" and now I can play with no problems.

I'm not too fond of it either, but then I like the current graphics. For some reason there's a lot of players who really want a darker, desaturated palette.

Beat the beta earlier this afternoon. Decent fun but was far too easy and a little bit dull to be honest. Beat the boss at level 8 and didn't die a single time throughout the entire playthrough. Also, I'm a little bit underwhelmed with the graphics. I like the environments, but I feel like they could do with a little more polish on the actual character models. I love the sound though.

I would have to say 2 months ago this was an absolute purchase. I'm not so sure right now. I'll have to see what more they're going to offer as we get closer to an actual retail release.

There's going to be more difficulty levels. I think there's even 1 where you can't play that character ever again if you die.

nah I dont mean graphics, I just mean where it feels like we should have been playing them over the past 10 years, of course they would look different, I'm just saying WoW delayed Blizzard alot, and it feels like it to me. I should have had these already and we should be talking the final Diablo 3 xp, and what of Diablo 4, SC3, WC4 ;D

eh sorta, it takes a bit too much color away (and I cant believe im saying that lol), just something that makes dark areas, dark and not... color tinted.

Like I feel like nowhere in Diablo 3 is it dark, its just hazed over navy blue. at least in the Beta. The artstyle is ok, it feels a bit lighter in tone (designwise) than 1 or 2, but has a sort of gothic, brothers grimm style fairytale look to it that works. Torchlight is straight up cartoonish by comparison, while Diablo 1 and 2 had harder realistic style, art wise it sort of looks like poser models cg.

on a scale of wow to diablo 1

WOW ......Torchlight.........................Diablo 3...............Diablo 2....Diablo 1.

I'm actually surprised to hear that people want that. If anything, I think the game needs a more saturated palette, and greater contrast, so that the darks are dark, but still stand apart from the things that have color and brightness in the world.

I was hoping it would have been possible to try out higher difficulties, but alas. The beta actually kind of put the game back on my radar, because I'm liking this more load-out inspired character building, and am interested in the dynamics that runes and changeable passives will bring to the game.

Anyone else finds the AH a complete mess ?
I don't really like the idea that you can auction every single thing, like useless whites.

It's going to be a nightmare to scroll through everything after a few days (or hours) of retail.

Anyone up for some rare item farming?

One person starts the skeleton king quest on a level 13 char, the other 3 players join with level 1 guys. The level 13 rushed to SK and kills it, and the level 1 guys get rare drops.

We then have a new person be the level 13 guy, then repeat.

I'm sure WoW's unprecedented success put a lot of other projects at Blizzard on hold for a bit. I really can't say that I would have been any more impressed with SC2's gameplay in 2005 than in 2010. I'm actually glad it came out in 2010 because Broodwar was so good that I really didn't need another RTS and having SC2 come out in 2010 allowed for the immense graphical leap that we were given.

Now Diablo 3; yea that coming out in 2008 would have been perfect.

I have played through the beta perhaps 50x at this point, I am beyond excited for this game. I'm hoping for April-May release date... Waiting sucks :(

There is no question about this in my mind. The explosion of popularity of WoW must have made them spend a lot more man power on it than they were expecting.

In a way i wish it didn't take so long but BW was so good it could have lasted me forever and D2 is still a lot of fun to me.

Man the wait is SO damn long still...

i still don't get it however, i mean back in the day other devs released super high quality games and did NOT take 10 years or whatever to do so... why does Blizzard who is not a small studio really take that long? It can't just be that they wanna make sure they game is awesome, gotta be other reasons right?

:(

hurry up already Blizz.

No one wants to join our rare farms? 2 spots open.

That graphically is on pair with D3?

It is not. It had a solid tech on its day and age, but it lacked the aesthetics to back it up and keep it good-looking in a timeless manner. Blizzard games will always look good years, years after they have been released. If not having some arbitrary technological "win" at release ensures that it stays that way, so be it.

They like to say that i know, but for me D3 looks really awful even today, especially geometry wise, so bad and low poly. Lighting is also awful.

This does not seem to be the popular opinion though. Most people seem to think D3 looks great, me included. It certainly looks leaps and bounds above titan quest, thats for sure.

And I can definately see me enjoying the D3-style graphics for years to come.

Hi, guys! My account just got activated and this is my first post on NeoGAF.

I was very lucky! I registered on friday and Im already in. I have been lurking for months now and thought it would take a long time to be able to post.

So, could you guys answer me this: I have an Radeon HD5450 1GB. Will that allow me to run Diablo 3 well?

Also, if you havent bought WoW or Starcraft, is there a chance you can get into the beta?

Thanks for the help. Happy to finally be here and be part of the discussion!
