IMO, I'm going with Diablo. Why?

-Better music
-Better animations(makes killing baddies more enjoyable)
-Better storyline
-Better NPCs(more interesting too)

The only thing Diablo II really has over Diablo is..

-Better online gaming enviornment
-More items/secrets to find
-More character classes
-Better skill system
-Better use of weapons
-Varied in-game environments
-Higher resolution

You say you like Diablo better using 4 examples of why... then say the only thing Diablo II has over Diablo is ... and proceed to almost double that?

...

Diablo 2 destroys Diablo 1 hands down. It's a fact.

I played through Diablo once, and then stopped after I killed Diablo.

On the other hand, I got stone cold hooked on Diablo II for the better part of a year, and I still suffer occasional withdrawal symptoms.

So, yeah, Diablo II is the right answer here.

I gave four examples because to me those were the most important in keeping me interested in a Diablo game. Those four things were the only thing that kept me playing the first Diablo. With Diablo II, the absence of a good soundtrack, the countless reusing of the same enemy sprites just slightly colored differently for new monsters, combined with the lack of an interesting storyline had me quit playing D2 half-way through twice before I bothered to finish it.

I think the only thing I liked about Diablo II overall was the chance to play online in a non-cheater environment and building up a character. That and the hardcore mode.

I'm pretty sure it's opinion. :D

I was totally hooked on Diablo II for far too long. It sucked so much of my life away that I cry about it sometimes :lol

The game is/was so damn addictive for me...I reinstalled the game 3 times over the course of nearly 3 years, each time vowing never to play the game again. It's off my HDD right now and I haven't played the game in nearly a year now, but I can't seem to bring myself to sell the game.

It's always there...watching....begging to be reinstalled.

NEVER AGAIN!

OK this is as good a time as any to ask this -- is there ANYWHERE I can get a copy of the Diablo I soundtrack? I absolutely loved the music but I've never been able to find it anywhere...

I don't think it exists. There's a Diablo II official soundtrack, but I've never heard of Blizzard releasing one for the original.

D1 wasnt actually better in any respect it was just new. Diablo II was better in every single fucking way and anyone who says otherwise needs to throw away their computer

This coming people who like Kabuki: Quantum Fighter yet fail to give the Secret of Evermore it's props. I say BAH! to you all!

I'll say: Diablo 2 except I hated the egypt and amazon settings.
The game is better than the first one, but the celtic enviroment of the first game brings back so many memories. The theme from the town of Diablo 1 is one of my favorite themes of all time.

Discovering Diablo 1... on my friends' 133 mhz pentium. Ahhh the memories. But Diablo 2 is still superior.

If these are the things you are looking for in a game, it's not Diablo you should be looking at. The series very puposely pays only token attention to them.

I never finished Diablo II (lost interest in the Amazon area), but I love Diablo 1 for the "oh shit" factor of the ending.

It was very considerate of you to go ahead and list all the reasons you're a goddamned moron in your initial post. Saves us a lot of trouble.

There was never an official release of the soundtrack, but one of the guys here at work plays the town music all the time on infinite loop. I just asked him where he got it, and he said 'kazaa'. I'm not one to support piracy, though. Chances are high that you can extract them from the game's data files if you're willing to spend an afternoon on google looking for an extraction tool. I mean, people hacked the living hell out of Diablo. I'm sure it's bared all it's secrets by now.

To the thread creator:
You sir, are wrong. And I can prove it in one word: Run. Diablo doesn't have the ability to run.

The only thing Diablo has over Diablo II is the (kinda gimpy and gimmicky) zoom key function.

Edit: typo

In Diablo 2 you don't have to click for every attack; you just hold down the mouse button. In Diablo 1, you have to click for every attack.

That is the main reason I like Diablo 2 better.

The Stash, the loot system, and more balanced advancement are also big reasons why 2 is better.

The original Diablo Tristram town song is on the D2 soundtrack.

If I recall correctly, Diablo has redbook audio, so if you have the CD, you could rip it just as a normal audio CD.

If you have the CD, you can rip the soundtrack with the following:

MPQ Viewer (Source)
storm.dll (Source)
List of files in Diablo's MPQ (Source)

If you've got a Blizzard game installed, you should already have storm.dll. Put it in the directory you extract the MPQ Viewer to, load the Diablo I filelist in the viewer, then the MPQ on the Diablo CD. Scroll down to "music\" for the music wav files, and save them. This thread inspired me to rip the soundtrack for myself, and it only took a few minutes to find the tools I needed and extract the music.
