Why would Sony show their hand first when the machine (PS3) is launching after Xenon? It doesn't compute.

It's impossible to know what form the PS3 unveiling will take. SCE could choose not to release actual specs and still show enough to leave a formidable impression on the press and consumer market.

i think microsoft was ready to show off 360 before january-february-ish (CES or something?) but then they want to rape everyone up the anus @ e3. I bet they didn't imagine the possibility of Ps3 in Late March.

I think that's correct. They knew there was a possibility SCE would show something in March but gambled that they wouldn't. For reasons unknown, the supposed CES and GDC unveilings of X360 were held back to E3.

The PS3 will probably be/has probably been shown behind closed doors. Bet the public ain't gonna see anything until E3...

Sony could well march to their own little drum. Xenon is likely to dominate E3 anyway, since it'll have a bunch of playables, so Sony could steal some thunder now and emphasise any Xenon shortcomings by its later announcement (from which you'd expect MORE than a console announced earlier). I don't see much upside for them waiting till e3, tbh.

Well, if both wait until E3, Sony could try to overshadow the Xbox 360 stuff. Do it early and yes, you get your own coverage, but so do MS then. Post-E3 would be able to have a much greater focus on the Xbox 360 if Sony had already shown the PS3 and that big unveiling coverage was already out of the way.

Plus, if Sony only show tech demos at E3, which tend to show graphics you wouldn't see for 3 or 4 years into a console's life (or sometimes never), while MS presumably will show 1st gen titles, to casuals Sony's system's going to seem far better graphically (deservedly or not) as they won't realise (or care) that tech demos are always going to be superior at this stage.

Unless MS show tech demos too of course. Though I don't think that's advisable, it'd just take away the impact of the playable games.
