Did both my dualsense controllers just break at the same time?

EDIT
Solution / Conclusion

So after more or less a day of research, vague results and the lack of comparative hardware, I decided to replace my white dualsense controllers with black ones that also match the black side panels of my PS5.

What can I say - the new black controllers make exactly the same noise. I don't know why I only noticed this after a few hours of play, but it doesn't seem to be a defect.

As some have pointed out ( thanks for the constructive comments Snake00 Snake00 EverydayBeast EverydayBeast Gamerguy84 Gamerguy84 GhostOfTsu GhostOfTsu RoadHazard RoadHazard LordOfChaos LordOfChaos Mr Moose Mr Moose bitbydeath bitbydeath Xaero Gravity Xaero Gravity Trimesh Trimesh ) it's the triggers that tighten when you switch weapons to provide the correct tension for the weapon. When you switch to the map or knife or aim at friendly NPCs, the tension relaxes again and makes a noise which is more quiet.

Knowing that I don't have a defective controller or one that wears out after just one year, I can continue to play with peace of mind, and perhaps this thread will also help one or two unsure players in the future.

By the way, I am surprised about the quite high percentage of those here who are apparently not able to read through a thread attentively, do not understand the facts and make fun of the problem ( or not problem ) because of their ignorance. Funny people.

Original Thread

I just continued playing RE8 and went shopping at Duke. When I finished and changed through my weapons, I heard a strange noise from my controller. Not from the speaker, but a faulty mechanical noise.

Listen here:

I never noticed the noise before. I connected my second controller - same thing.
I did restart the PS5 and even reset one of the dualsenses. No improvement.

Vibration still works.
Adaptive triggers still work.

If someone has time, desire, RE8 and a PS5 at home - maybe you want to check if the weapon change makes the same noises in the controller? I would appreciate that.
Maybe the controller had been making these noises for the whole 7 hours before and I hadn't noticed it - which I don't think is the case, since it suddenly disturbed me enormously.

I think that's the normal sound for changing weapons.

You know the controller has a speaker...right?

Thats the controller speaker

Seems like speaker sound, which is normal.
No, it is not the speaker. I sense that it is the moving parts in the controller
Yesterday we had someone thinking motion smoothing made all games run at 60fps, today we have someone discovering that the PS controllers have a speaker.

2022 is delivering.
Funny guy, the main thing is to make the others look stupid, huh?
It sounds either like the speaker or the adaptive trigers adjusting to the weapons.
This.
I have set the trigger intensity to "off" in the controller settings and the noise is gone. The controller adjusts to the resistance for the individual weapons.
But I could swear that the controller did not make any noise before when adjusting.
I noticed it from one moment to the other and now it bothers me. It would be interesting to know if the controller is already worn out.

To be fair the OP does acknowledge that the controller has a speaker in the very first paragraph.

Sony Customer Service

Support. Tel.: 1-800-345-7669.

don't be afraid to call them and maybe ship it off for repairs.
Yes, I will do that tomorrow. Returning them to the store will probably not work, since the controllers have been in my possession for over a year.

Looks like I'm not the only one who noticed. I'm really surprised that I only noticed it after a few hours of playing...
Will probably have to continue playing without the adaptive trigger function, because it annoys me too much now.

I would say the odds would be against both your DS breaking the same way at the same time. Do you have other games to test, ASTRO bot

I haven't played RE8 (yet, it's in my backlog), but my DualSense has been making very audible adaptive trigger noise since the day I got it. Sounds exactly like that. Noisiest controller I've ever owned by far. So I think it's normal (but probably more or less noisy from unit to unit, just like some PS5s have pretty loud coil whine and fan noise while others don't).

It's a haptic feature, lots of games use it like Far Cry 6 everytime you access the map or switch weapons. Even Samsung phones.

What a ridiculous thread

It's not haptics, it's the adaptive triggers changing tension or engaging/disengaging.

Dualsense from day 1 has made audible sounds when the adaptive triggers are "getting ready" for a different feeling, like when a scene goes from not being able to shoot to being able to shoot I can hear them change

So far it's not caused any issue. Though I do have very slight control drift on the right stick sometimes.

I'll find my disc and check mine.
It's the trigger adjusting and maybe the speaker too lol, but trigger for sure.

You might think about calling Sony. I have 3 dual sense controllers and several games and have never heard a sound from anything but the speaker. It's possible a weird batch was made.

I would at least get it documented in case they say it's normal.

This is just the sound of the resistance settings in the triggers changing as you're equipping a new weapon. Nothing to worry about

Have you tried other games? Chances are it’s an RE8 feature.
I believe it is, I haven't heard it on any others that use the trigger features (CoD and stuff). It's like the sound of the weapon being taken out. I feel the tension in the triggers change and I can hear the noise, not 100% sure where it comes from (speaker or trigger).

No, it's the Trigger Effect Intensity setting. He's not even touching the triggers, it does that when switching weapons with the arrows.

Did you turn off the Trigger Effect Intensity? I hear those clicks all the time in lots of games. It's normal and it's a feature you can turn off. No need to panic and call Sony.

Because the mechanism is changing tension level depending on the gun he has equipped, hence the sound when he switches weapons

That's exactly what I'm saying. I'm not talking about any sound the triggers make when pressed, I'm talking about the resistance in them changing. A lot of games change this constantly to make different weapons feel different etc. It's especially noticable in games where the resistance is turned off when pausing, you can hear a very obvious clicking sound as it engages and disengages. Or I can with my controller at least.

In that case there are LOADS of faulty controllers. This is a very common issue (as the responses in this thread also demonstrate).

No maybe my daughter did ill check. Just going by the audio in the clip and another user stating the same it sounded off to me.

I checked with someine else I know personally and said they never heard a click either.

Someone else described resistance changing on the trigger, which is a thing. Must be it. The click on the clip just seemed louder than I recall.

luckily I don't because my contract ended at the end of 2021 and I haven't got another job yet (for context I was led to believe it was contract-to-hire but then the company went through a merger/acquisition but not being extended was still a surprise)

Did both of my DualSense controllers become possessed by spirits at the same time?

So, I was playing a game and I heard a voice speaking to my character. The thing is, the sound wasn't coming from my television speakers, but speaking THROUGH my controller!

Obviously, it had become possessed, so I immediately burnt it. I grabbed my remaining DualSense and continued playing. But the same thing happened.

What should I do? Should I call Sony? A medium? My priest? I'm at a loss here. I really don't want to spend another $70 on a PoS controller that is likely just to become possessed again.

Vibration still works.
Adaptive triggers still work.

But, I don't think I can continue playing with an evil, speaking controller.

I hear it also (or more like "feel" it) on menus, maps or games with no weapons at all. To me it's more like a haptic feedback similar to the joycons. If people rather believe there's a widespread issue than whatever.

I don't have a PS5 yet, but a bunch of my friends do - and there seems to be considerable variation between controllers, especially with the trigger tension adjustment. Some are almost completely silent and others make a rather noticeable noise while adjusting - I guess if you are always using the same controller you probably wouldn't notice it so much.

I think it's kinda funny that the controller makes more noise than the console does.

I think what OP is experiencing is what was intended with that game, but yeah, it can be disturbing. Probably very much intended as it IS a horror game. And it seems that for the OP, it was used to great effect.

I had drift in my right stick, was bloody annoying.

I sprayed WD40 as best I could (didn't open it up) and turned the stick around for a little while.

It worked! No more drift. Must have been some dirt inside the stick.

The triggers in both of my DualSense 5 controllers have made that sound from launch day. Sounds like a moving part being adjusted when tension changes.

Just chiming in that mine does it as well and is still working great.

That and to drink in all the early self-own posts. Just beautiful.

Wut. Play Dirt 5 for a while with the sound turned off. Or play a few rounds of COD Cold War multiplayer. If you're not hearing any sounds from your controller, then you're not playing any games that use the adaptive trigger hardware.

Haven't had any issues with mine other than the R2 spring breaking. Had worse luck with DS4 controllers in comparison.

Now watch me get stick drift tonight.

The problem was identified / solved. That WD-40 comment seems unrelated.

Knowing how the controller is build it's pretty unlikely any WD-40 got beneath the inner "umbrella" of the stick. Probably just moving the stick around solved your drift.

That's what I wrote in my conclusion.

I was looking for a thread to place this on things NOT to do to your Controller.
