Did Square-Enix forget to show up?

I haven't heard any Square-Enix news from TGS. I know they had a small booth, but sheesh... there's gotta be something! What is 'World of Mana' like? New Dirge trailer? Any Crisis Core surprises?
What the hell's going on? No FFXII?

They were there but their stand was tiny and pretty much token. All their announcements were at their Party at the end of July. No FF12 at the show (not even a trailer), but Dirge of Cerberus and KH2 were playable along with Code Age.

was there a specific reason why FFXII isn't at TGS? That's just strange... it's suppose to be their 'top tier' game for the rest of the PS2 gen, right? -_-

yeah, exactly. Makes me wonder who's in charge of marketing. At this rate, they'll release FFXII and nobody will even know about it. Shoot, I already talk to a whole lot of RPG fans who don't even know that FFXII is being made-- they thought it was all rumors and speculation still.

Square-Enix is really dropping the ball here, and it's too bad, too.

TGS 2005: The World of Mana Update
The mysterious new RPG project from Square was not yet a part of this world.
by Nix

September 16, 2005 - Square Enix has teased us for quite a while now with its next project in the Mana series, not even confirming whether the play would follow the adventuring of the Seiken Densetsu series (ala Secret of Mana, and not Legend of Mana or anything else disappointing us ever since ) that the game is best known for. The World of Mana was once again teased at TGS, with only a trailer video to speak of and no hint of platform or release plans. Square's representatives at the booth smiled big and directed us to this video when we asked about the game, but we weren't sure if they were excited for the project and just couldn't say or else had already been asked the question a billion times before just in the early hours of the show and were trying to keep their humor about them.

In terms of what was shown in the video, there was little hint as to what the game would be, but we can guess that whatever The World of Mana is, it will be lush. "It happened a long time ago...," we are told. The video then opened with a fly-by of miles and miles of perfectly green round trees. A brilliant flock of red birds flew over, and we traveled along with them for a ways until the camera started to pull back. It was then revealed that what we were seeing wasn't a world of trees, but rather a gigantic tree, made of trees, itself standing tall in a further forest of more trees. This is the legendary Mana Tree, and it should be the centerpiece for the tale told in the game. The tagline on the video concluded that, "The grand adventure that began with the Mana Tree will unfold for you."

Where and when this adventure will unfold is still a giant mystery. The going rumor is that the project is a joint development of a PS2 and a Nintendo DS game, with perhaps other components on other platforms to follow (the same way Square's Code Age series has hit PS2, mobile phones, manga, etc.) You know as much as we do at this point, so look for full disclose on The World of Mana in any of its due incarnations once Square Enix is ready to reveal the game.

Same shit as before unfortunately.

EDIT: Nix's comment in there about Legend and Sword was uncalled for and very unprofessional.

I'm still very much looking forward to FFXII, but I'm afraid that it'll lose momentum among the wider crowd if nothing else happens before now and the release. No special event, no..I dunno, something. It has among my friends, that's for sure. It ranks high in the famitsu most wanted, gaining even more votes IIRC since they started releasing new info. Good on em but the list's not a good indicator of sales. Johnnyram or anybody else living in Japan: what's the buzz like in there for FFXII? Do you think they need to make another event before releasing (making another "milestone", in effect) or just go straight to the media campaign leading up to the release?

....I just hope the team's still working on it in all these delays.

On one hand I thought it'll be awesome if it's moved to PS3, but on the other hand I will loathe the day they announce it with an extra 1+ year of dev time.

There was an FFXII trailer there. I don't think it was new, though.
KHII date got revealed too, as well as the new FFXI expansion.

Treasures of Aht Urhgan. None of the areas shown had a name yet (in the log, it just showed up as Area: name). They showed no new monsters, and one new job (blue mage).

They don't give a shit about running things as a company. They're just very introspective as a company, and nobody knows what the hell goes on inside there. I wouldn't doubt em scrapping a nearly finished PS2 game even. They just don't have any business sensibility in them. I've come to loathe them as a developer this gen. Last gen was great, with all the production, but wtf happened to them??? They can't finish a project without hundreds of guys working for 6 years. Then somehow they have the finances to jump into full CG motion pictures. Lost big on Spirits Within, and the thought of losing didn't even cross their mind till they did. There's some missing link with their thought process.

Square Enix lack business sensibility? They are the second largest software publisher in Japan for christs sake.

Regardless.....I am still a bit pissed at them this gen. Too many sequels and too much reliance on the FF franchise. Their marketing of FFXII is very strange. It was playable at E3 2004. Here we are at TGS 2005 and we dont even get a new trailer. wtf?

I was personally told that the reason FFXII wasn't shown is because it's undergoing a bit of a metamorphosis and they didn't feel it was right to show it until the change was done.

With Matsuno off the project it's blatant that the game isn't finished and the team are crunching to finish it, meaning they probably had little to no time to do a new demo (they've already done one this year for the private Party) or trailer. A showing at TGS is probably the least of their problems at the moment and was probably very low priority to them. I have faith it'll be worth the wait tho.
