Did the Canadian Dreamcast launch fail?

Recently I was talking with a friend of mine who had lived in Louisiana before coming to university in Canada. He was talking about how he needed to get replacement shakers for Samba de Amigo, and generally about how great the Dreamcast was, and about how all his friends back home had one. After this conversation I realized that all throughout the Dreamcast period I never knew one person who owned one. Also, I realized that in the several years after Dreamcast was dead I would frequently see posts on games forums saying: “big Dreamcast sale at EB” or “cheap Dreamcast games at EB,” but I never saw any sign of something similar in Canada. In fact, I rarely ever saw used Dreamcasts or games. It seems to me that the Dreamcast was much more popular in America than in Canada.

My question is: Am I just forgetting the whole big Dreamcast push, or did Sega of Canada somehow botch the Dreamcast launch? Was Dreamcast actually less popular in Canada than in America? Canadian GAFers, am I crazy?

Uh...where do you live in Canada?

You might want to move to another city. :P

It did well here in Calgary...

Actually, all my friends got one because I imported mine from Japan so they got to see it in all it's glory before it was launched. I remember my friend in Red Deer writing an article in the Red Deer Advocate where he splooged over it, giving it some hype.

There were plenty of used DC software (which I bought) at EB... The closest microplay even imported DC games, which is something they don't do for other consoles!

I don't know, it might be just you. I didn't know anyone with a DC either, until its demise, that is.

I don't think so, I remember them selling the dreamcast on my local shopping channel.

There was DC mareting around the entire city.

I remember the DC launch at TRU, there was a guy who took off work to buy 5 DCs for him and his collegues still at work.

It was funny. Wanted to take a picture but the guy refused. It was at a time where digicams weren't popular.

I suppose this is a rather skewed audience to pose the question to, considering that so many GAFers import and have 3 PS2s or other such crazyness. What examples of a subsidiary company massively screwing up a gaming launch are there? I know the SEGA master system was much more popular in the UK than it was in the USA for example. What was the story behind that?

I would guess so considering i bought a dreamcast for $50 canadian from zellers during the second year. It was a non-playable demo unit, non-playable as in it was working but there was no access for people to actually play it.

Dreamcast flopp'd everywhare, the only people that bought DC's were the die hard Sega fans and people with a hot pocket. Sony pushed it's hype hard 2 months before the DC, *hence* killing poor Sega.

I knew a ton of people that just steight-up held out for PS2 as I played my DC, the only time people started to cave in was when the online thing hit with Quake 3 and the sports games and they even fucking whinned about no Madden on the console online in the lobbies. PSO was the only thing that sold DC's overall.

Soo I give you a BIG FAT middle FINGER EA! :lol as soon as PS2 hit the shevels and Madden it was over for DC.

Perhaps you are a senior citizen and your group home decided to shitlist the DC because there was no Matlock game.
