Digital Foundry: Dragon Age: The Veilguard - PS5/Xbox Series X|S Tech Review - Impressive Visuals, Good Performance

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Dragon Age: The Veilguard impressed us on PC - and so perhaps it's not surprising to find that the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions of the game are also attractive and solid, with decent performance - if not quite a 60fps lock. Xbox Series S is cut-back as expected - but still gets the job done. Oliver Mackenzie has the full DF console performance review.

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X have two visual modes in Veilguard, a fairly customary fidelity mode and performance mode, which target 30fps and 60fps respectively. For resolutions, we're looking at pretty typical FSR 2 targets, with the fidelity mode usually running at or around 1080p and the performance mode coming in around 720p. At a minimum, I counted 504p in the performance mode, so there is some dynamic res there, though the fidelity mode held at 1080p in my testing. From those internal figures, BioWare is using a customized version of FSR 2.2 to bring the game to higher resolutions, likely around 4K for the fidelity mode and 1440p for the performance mode, at least judging from comparisons to the PC code.

So as usual for the last year or so... low resolution in performance modes. Shame.

- "Clearly a very handsome title"
- Strand based hair system praised, looks good in both game play and cut-scenes
- Cartoonish faces stick out slightly but stylized approach helps avoid uncanny valley

- Consoles have 2 modes. Performance and Quality

- PS5:
- Fidelity: At or around 1080p and Performance at or around 720p with low DRS seen at 540p
- Fidelity seems to stick to target resolution mostly
- FSR2 used to upscale to 4K for Fidelity and 1440p for Performance
- FSR2 fizzle and noise is lesser than most games using it
- Image stability is generally fine and only stressed in fast combat, with little breakup
- Fidelity is clearer but Performance's doubled refresh helps keep issues to minimum

- Fidelity exclusively features RT reflections and AO
- Equivalent to PC's "selective" setting so it doesn't apply to all surfaces
- Some places like rivers show the same cube maps on both modes
- Similarly for RTAO, only some areas get coverage.
- No area spotted with both RTAO and RT Reflections at the same time
- Certain areas get more priority over others and usage is very selective per area
- RTAO improvement over Performance is very subtle
- Only other difference is slightly higher SSAO, not much else to separate other than resolution

- Fidelity mode is pretty much locked at 30 in DF's testing
- Performance is mostly 60 but has periodic drops in cut-scenes and combat

- Xbox:
- Series X is just about identical to PS5 with same resolution metrics
- RT and Visual quality metrics are also similar to PS5

- Series S has the same toggles for both Performance and Quality mode.
- Fidelity: 648p with a softer output than PS5/SX (FSR to 1440p ?)
- Performance: 480p with FSR2 to 1080p
- Both modes suffer more image breakup than PS5/SX comparatively
- RT is dropped entirely and Strand hair are also dropped for more simpler hair
- 30 FPS mode runs pretty locked outside of a single drop in DF testing
- 60 FPS mode somewhat similar but has more drops, not up to the other consoles
- Both Xbox machines (and PS5) also tear slightly

Verdict:
- DF preferred the Performance mode on PS5/SX
- On Series S the choice is less clear, usually they would go for 30fps but there's no motion blur here that can make it a bit harder to recommend
- Solid experience on current gen consoles

The good thing about performance mode is every character is nonbinary because you can’t make out wtf is happening on screen.

Nice mobile game from 2010, stupid. It would be less insulting if they just locked it at 30 fps and be done with it.

At least they mentioned that the FSR this time doesn't have too much shimmering etc, need to have a demo to see for myself.

Curious how the Pro version will look in performance mode. Should look a lot crisper in both modes with pssr
1080p for Performance mode. It could drop lower when busy, but typical res should be around 1080p. Fidelity should be around 1440p. With PSSR i expect both mode to look much better especially the fidelity mode.

I do hope they offer the 40fps mode, but seeing the base consoles don't have it, I guess it is a no.

Yeah 1080p to 4k with pssr should look better than fidelity on base

The upscaling on playstation always looks like a checkerboard. I swear 1440p on pc looks way the hell better.

Meanwhile, with the same engine, on last gen consoles, running at actual 1300-1440p on Pro and 1800p-4K on the 1X, 60fps and also including an online multiplayer with 64 simultaneous players (+ additional bots and air + ground battles)

And yeah I know not every element holds up and there are definitely things that DA is doing better. But is the visual upgrade we've gotten really worth 9X LOWER resolution?

Internal res drops to 540p in perf. mode without any rt, ps5/xsx are not the newest hw but new generation of game devs have massive skill issue with perf. optimization
I don’t think it’s a skill issue, it’s a time investment issue. Have to meet that deadline.

Let me get back my 486 so I can remember what 480 looks like. Ok it was maybe interleaved at this time.

Something is seriously wrong with Console port as RTX 3060 on Ultra settings and Ray tracing on without upscale got 45 to 55 fps on 1080p according to digital trend.

"It’s not too demanding, either. With the Ultra preset and selective ray tracing on, I was able to get between 45 and 55 frames per second (fps) with the RTX 3060 at 1080p, even during combat, and that was without any upscaling. With DLSS set to Quality mode, I was easily hitting over 60 fps."

Fucking hell, that has to rival Rebirth as the worst performance mode GOTY.

Like I said. Modern rendering techniques which mostly port from pc is a curse to consoles.
