[Digital Foundry] Hands-On With Steam Machine: Valve's Beautiful PC/Console - Specs, Impressions And More

Garbage specs. 5 years after PS5's launch and you still cant beat its specs? Go get a real job. Also, 512gb ssd. What a joke Valve has turned into. maybe Gabe can get off his yacht and start taking an interest in his business instead of eating caviar out of hookers asses all day.

The silver lining: if Half Life 3 releases it'll be optimised for 8GBVRAM GPUs.

If it exists of course. Trailer at Game Awards, launch with these hardwares. Both VR and non-VR modes. Steam Machine Optimised so accessible to many.

with those specs and the associated pc games hurdles i don't see the appeal if not as a nice stReam box from main pc. This is a console/pc hybrid in the worst possible way for me, just a bit better than some NUCs around, let's hope the price is right and they can start a sincere steamos migration from windows. If anything this thing make the ps5 de seems a good deal

I think they want people to buy it, so it'll be priced so

I want SteamOS to make enough of an impact that multiplayer games can no longer ignore it for anticheat support.
Kernel-level anti-cheat should never have happened in the first place. Telling users they need to allow an app, which is closed source, to get kernel access is something I would fire engineers for if they'd suggested it to me.

But it is not a console but a Steam Machine, a gaming pc device. It runs pc games, most of them from the Steam library, others will be available through loops, but they are pc games not console games.

What I don't get is how people are rooting for this and claiming the XBOX is dead because of a new Steam Machine in the market which already failed in the past. I understand the love for Valve and the hate for anything MS/XBOX related but tbh it doesn't make any sense from a gaming perspective.

You answered your own question. If this was a device from MS they'd be laughing about the power level of this thing. 'MS can't compete so they're going the Nintendo route, small and cheap, lol!"

Also, there is no way this will be cheaper than a Steam Deck for people wanting $300 price. Shame about the RAM.

I'd be interested in a more powerful 3rd party box or maybe I'll just wait for Magnus.

If it's not considerably cheaper than building something similar or better yourself, it won't be successful. Console gamers aren't going to spend that much on a device, and PC gamers who want a "steam box" will have no problem building something themselves.

Steam Deck was released at a lower price than the same device would have cost from another brand because it subsidized part of the cost of attracting people to its ecosystem and its newly launched OS, and because that motivated people to buy more games (in fact, there was even a news story at the time saying that people who bought a Steam Deck went on to buy more games than before they had it), so I wouldn't be surprised if this case were similar.

If they manage to achieve a great price/performance ratio, even I, who have a powerful PC, would consider having this little box under my living room TV for less demanding games from my backlog.
a good price to performance ratio for this underpowered thing is 300 bucks. At that price paired with a couple goodies it'd sell like hotcakes especially compared to all the other overpriced shit on the market.

400 is dicey but they could make it work if they stepped up their game, ship it with 12gb of vram instead and an additional controller, plus a couple of the valve catalogue maybe. 450 is the absolute limit they can go before this becomes unpalatable to anybody looking for a gaming system in current year.

But the realistic answer is 550. And at that price you'd be an idiot to buy this over a PS5.

I can see the potential in this. It's small, and it would slot nicely into my ps5's section. Being '4K capable' is fine with me. Bit concerned about the 8gig, but should be ok with the majority of games. Don't like the controller either, but I'm sure there will be other options via bt. Depending on how they price it (£399 is the sweet spot I think), I am tempted to pick one up and have a small slice of pc gaming back in my life. Never thoughtt I'd say that again. Play this right, the Steam box could be fuckin huge.

duh because, because, duh... plus while having +- the same power but with near infinite more games plus the non gaming usages...

I'm sure it will kill Sony PS5 sales....

"Infinite games ... LOL

Near identical is not the same as identical. But okay, lets just make stuff up to try to make your opinion seem more valid.

Its like hardcore porno; you know it when you see it. To me, Rog Ally does not pass the sniff test (and by virtue neither do gaming laptops you buffoon), but the Steam Machine does if it functions as seamlessly as the steam deck.

It's funny how when you define consoles like this it just becomes a list of everything that makes them shitty:

- closed OS
- locked to a single storefront who you are completely at the mercy of
- only runs approved software
- paid online
- sub services
- limited options for inputs

Thankfully none of this will apply to gabecube

Unless this is priced quite low, I'm not sure of the market size for this one, frankly. The Steam Deck delivered high quality performance in the palm of your hand at a pretty good price for what it is. It's brilliant. This, though, is just a mid-range Desktop PC with an under-cooked GPU. If it's $199, brilliant - Valve have done it again! If it's $499, well, why would I bother over a PS5 or an XSX?

Can't watch video at work, does this have the ability to use external programs like Wemod? Primary reason I buy some single player games on Steam instead of Ps5 is the ability to use some cheats on games I have played through prior.

thats what microsoft said when they came up with the abomination that was the series s.

no one wants to buy poorly spec'd hardware. regardless of the price.
Switch and switch 2 say otherwise. This is a dumb comment.

It's all about price. They could make this work if they decided to bite the bullet and make it cheap while offering some games

Maybe not HL3 though because that is a collective delusion the gaming community has put themselves into

Switch never sold because of price, it sold because of EXCLUSIVE games on a combined portable-fixed system

Actually Switch and Switch 2 are OVERPRICED

Massively BW limited, based on RX 7600, so 288 gb/sec with dedicated 8gigs. I hate they are using the word 4K in marketing this box. May be they are testing the waters with this product. But this is going to be niche product, neither consoles or PC gamers are likely to be excited. Had they taken big risk with a premium 1200$ I think they could have pulled it off and get some PC gamers excited at least.

I'm down for the Steam Machine as I'm currently using my Steam Deck as a docked console for my TV, so any upgrade or improvement there is welcomed

If Microsoft plans on tackling PC gaming with a new machine that can play my steam library, also do backward compatibility with Xbox libraries, outperforms the Steam Machine, and releases before it, then Microsoft can be sure to secure a purchase from me

Yea but you also have access to an enormous library of games both past and present. I'm more worried about that 8gb of VRAM on the GPU. I wouldnt even say it's bare minimum. I think 12 is bare minimum if you want this thing to last any significant amount of time.
That's the thing, a PC is great when it's pulling off powerful hardware, but when it's little more than a console, I prefer a console, without graphics options and with guaranteed performance.

Realistically this will cost $699, i imagine they're currently trying to drag the price down to $599.

I highly doubt this will cost $399, it's not realistic. If they somehow manage this price or even $499, this would automatically become a HUGE steal given how much an equivalent PC would cost. Forget gaming, if you just want a PC in general it'd be a no brainer to get this instead of basically everything else in the market.

Yeah, I see their notes now about this not being console-priced, but instead priced like an entry-level gaming PC. If it's $700-$800 you might be able to build a better rig on your own, even with the crazy ram pricing.

Switch never sold because of price
The thing went for 300 bucks, you're bullshitting if that didn't play a part in its roaring success. Still weak hardware and still sold well.

And what do you want? Games exclusive to the steam os? That'd be anti consumer and go against everything valve built up over the past 10 years.
They can sell this thing if they aren't retarded and price it what it's actually worth. But I doubt it hence why it's DOA

Had they taken big risk with a premium 1200$ I think they could have pulled it off and get some PC gamers excited at least.

I've discussed this at length in other topics related to other products, but a price point of $1200 is a big ask for non-upgradable hardware.

Once you get to that sort of price category for PC gamers, you tend to be dealing with more savvy customers, and most will be reluctant to dump that kind of cash in to dead end hardware.

At 800£, you can get a pre-built PC with a much better CPU, 32 GB RAM and Nvidia 5060 8GB GDDR7, a much more capable machine thanks to DLSS4. This is DoA if costs a pence more than 349£ for the 512 GB model.

No way it'll be £349. Not a chance.

I'm hoping it's no more than £500. I have no idea how much it costs Valve to make. Are Valve expecting to make a profit from day one, or will they be selling it at a loss? No idea.

For those that don't like the specs, just rest assured that after release a load of more powerful AMD powered steam machine clones will come and obviously people will be able to build their own. The key thing is getting SteamOS support and acceptance as wide as possible, this is just an initial necessary phase to set a baseline.

I love what Valve is doing with this and the Frame, but not for the devices themselves, but the wider hope for more open systems.

8gb vram in 2026 doesn't look good
This is an entry-level consolized PC aimed at playing up to PS5-level games at 1080p at an affordable price.

From those lens, 8GB of VRAM are perfectly fine -- it is not meant to execute The Witcher 4 at high settings whenever that comes out; probably 2028, which puts us in next-gen territory already.

unless I am missing something, between this and quest 3, both can be used for PCVR wireless but I would loose excess to quest store and why would I get this over quest 3, unless this is priced super aggressively.

Watched the video.. weak hardware.. about 4060 level with 8gb but with FSR3... I am not really very thrilled about it. if this is about 200/250US then yeah should be worth it. even at 300$ I feel its ok price. anything above is a big nope for me.

But knowing this is a new device and hype and all. it's not gonna be below 500$ lol
Well the Series S 512gb launched at $300 now it's $400. The Series S is weaker so... Why $200-250-300?

Anyone who doesn't like the specs, just build your own PC for christ sake.
Pretty much, and I can't wait to see people do it in the same form factor. (with integrated PSU)

The engineering isn't exactly trivial.

There is an argument though for having the PSU external, personally I'd prefer a power brick and some more thermal headroom for a boosted GPU. Assuming identical enclosure volume.

I'm laughing at these price projections ITT.

This thing will be close to $1000 if not over. No chance of $399, lol. It isn't a console, doesn't market itself as a console, is not trying to be a console, and it has far more functionality than a console.
