Digital Foundry: Hands-on with the Forza Horizon 2 demo

The reflections on the hood on the car is the same shit Turn10 has been doing for a while. The mirror the world on the hood of the car. I'm waiting for them to move from faking and bakinf a bunch of stuff to more dynamic techniques. This is what mean by not next gen.
And how else do you think it's been done in other racing games? It's by far the most accurate, least computationally-expensive method available, which is why it's used in many games. You know what else is a graphical trick/hack? Screenspace reflection techniques used in Driveclub or KZ:ShadowFall. Glad you've decided to give up posting any further. Less nonsense in this thread, the better. :)

Edit:

I'll respect your opinion as much as anyone else's, but if you base your opionion on misinformed facts, like baked lighting in Horizon 2, then you're going to start losing credibility. I suggest you do your homework before entering into an argument.

LMAO I missed that!

Well it's the second open world racing game on the xb1. The first one Rivals and that was a straight cross gen port so you might want to wait there for a bit. Based on the dev time it's had, plus the fact that it's a first party title, I would've expected more. The aa on the foliage is poor. I was taking a look at some direct caps and you might as well color me unimpressed. Like I said, it's got great art direction and it looks good but it doesn't look "next gen".

WTF does this last part even me? Goodness, such terrible trolling. If you played the game, you wouldn't have these opinions, I imagine. I think it's one of the most "next-gen" games I've played on either system so far.

Nah, I'm not a fan of putting people on ignore. I'd rather discuss their opinions and if they happen to be trolling or having a laugh, so be it.

I think Playground are doing a lot more dynamic stuff than Turn10 were doing in Mainline 5. The article is pretty in depth in terms of what PG have managed to achieved, well worth reading.

Definitely check it out over the weekend though, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by how impressive everything looks and how insignificant the basic looking foliage really is when you're busy playing the game.

Yea, they're doing a lot of really cool dynamic stuff. The stuff about lighting with Rayleigh scattering is incredibly impressive (i.e. the color of the sky is accurately created based on where the sun is in the sky). And accurate rainbows. And the stars in the sky at night are accurately mapped. I could go on, this game has a lot of really cool stuff happening in the background, I don't see how anyone could call it "last gen" with a straight face.

I've just stumbled upon this video. Its old so I guess most people here have seen it, no idea how I missed it, but shows a lot of environments I hadn't seen before.

Now, being open world, what the game looks like largely depends on where your car is, what part of the scenery you're seeing etc, but after seeing this, and gamersyde videos...I'm not so sure anymore what the best looking racer of 2014 is going to be..

This game looks decidedly current gen. Not just that, its one of the best looking current gen games.

Agreed.

Yeah, the real world, and that location, is full of bright color. They captured it perfectly.

It reminds me a lot of the light/colors of Northern California around where I live, such as Napa and Sonoma valleys. The way the light looks, how it almost has that really orange/dusty quality at times, they really nailed it very well.

Game looks really beautiful, I was thinking damn this looks almost as good as DC,then i started comparing them, and saw how far ahead DC was graphically, that's why some people probably think it doesn't look next gen. but it's important to remember this is open world.

On a more serious note, it seems rather curious that they did not use alpha-to-coverage in conjunction with their MSAA framebuffer.
That seems like a common theme. Is it problematic to specify different alpha for the different geometry samples? Are they rendering the cheap foliage after MSAA resolve?

*shrug*

Nice vid, surprisingly not seen that one and shows the online free roam nicely.

So hyped for this game.

What does ANNA unavailable mean near the mini map?

Exactly. Now I do not believe that FH2 could reach DC levels if it was not open world, but what the devs have done with this game with how open it is, is incredible.

So close! First preorder after BF3 when I said never again!
And first digital preorder.

Question:
Will VIP pass work if I buy it from different xbox account than the one i used for buying the game?

I hadn't seen that video before but the way he explained how online roadtrips and free roam work from about the 13:30 point onwards has got my more hyped than ever now!

edit - Oh and there is an Abbey Arena in there too, I've been visiting ruined abbeys this summer in England. The one in FH2 will be my 4th :)
