And thus began the great Nintendo/Leapfrog war.
You'd love that wouldn't you lolBut it would be nice if they could be quiet.
The thing that has me most excited about Switch and the thing that I think is sort of underrated in terms of its potential success is the fact that Nintendo will be consolidating their development houses behind one platform for the first time in decades. This is what might create the biggest difference between the Switch and the Wii U, GameCube and even the Wii. Anecdotally, it's why I've personally passed on Nintendo the last couple of generations. Their console libraries were not robust enough to merit the cost of the hardware for me, and while the handhelds seemed to get a solid library of first party games, I just could not get passed the horrible, dated tech and shitty displays. It might not be a tech powerhouse and it probably will get shitty third party support, but behind one platform I think Nintendo has the ability to singlehandedly support one successful platform. Does this mean it will sell as much as PS4 or Wii? Probably not, but for the Nintendo of 2016, the Nintendo that is branching out to mobile and theme parks and possibly movies or tv, if probably doesn't have to.
Yeah, but people were expecting performance on par with current home consoles, close to xbox one at least. So I was more comparing that spec-wise it's an evolution of a gaming handheld more than a home console. The word 'gimmick' is a bit overused, it's definitely a main feature of the Switch but so was motion controls with Wii and off-TV play with Wii U but people also consider those 'gimmicks'.
It is a handheld, but Nintendo call it a home console. Their mistake.
PS2 was state of the art when it came out and rode that wave for almost its entire life cycle. The power of the console was a huge part of the wave of hype. It feels like people try and revise history to paint the PS2 as having to deal with this perception of being "underpowered" which never existed.
For handheld mode it still outperforms Wii U, that alone is awesome.
The GPU not hitting full X1 speeds while docked is pretty lame though, but it's enough to at least push higher resolutions.
People need to stop treating this like a hone console.
You mean the trailer that showed the Switch being played portably for 90% of it?Then dont show it as one in your reveal trailer. Show it as a handheld period.
As if they'd suddenly change, after the DS, Wii, 3DS and Wii U were all hilariously underpowered. What were you guys expecting lol
The majority of the reveal was people playing it on the go. Nintendo may call it a home console, but they are already marketing it as a handheld. It is a home console though. A hybrid, sure, but if Nintendo wants people to look at it more as a handheld they're gonna need to present it like that themselves, where I do believe they're doing it wrong.

the last i hear is that ffxv runs better on x1![]()
Still makes it an absolute beast of a handheld and when docked it's more powerful than the Wii U. I'm happy but I'm not a spec geek.I don't think that's true. It's 176 vs 150 (switch).
It's a portable more than a "handheld".
Its a bit big to be called "Handheld".
I also credit the general population with having the intelligence to understand the concept of a dockable portable - like the laptops they've been using for years - as not being a thing that only fits into one specific category.
Even if seemingly a large number of people on GAF (intentionally?) choose not to.
Though I think this is being blown out of proportion (as goes the internet), to be fair, Nintendo is calling it a home console.
They've said it several times themselves on their own marketing emails and website.
So Nintendo wants us to treat it that way.
You mean the trailer that showed the Switch being played portably for 90% of it?
The damage control in this refugee camp is real, lol. Guys keep in mind that Switch needs to sell 60-70 million skus in 5-6 years to stop the downward trend into irrelevance. Good, luck Ninty, my good ole boy.
You can see the reception on gaf itself. If you told people "Next Nintendo's handheld is 6 to 8 times faster than PSVita", people would be all over the place.
A slightly underpowered console. Something like 2/3 of an Xbone docked would have been awesome. Weaker than Wii U in portable mode is a disaster.
Wii U cannot run Mario Kart in 60FPS for 4 players and it's way less detailed. It's choking on Zelda BotW (current state). If the switch really is 75% of a Wii U in portable mode, we can say goodbye to open world games and even Nintendo's own games will be seriously hindered by the performance bottleneck.
Well then them saying it's a new console in emails, and marketing.
Also showing it as a console with it being docked in the beginning, middle, and showing it as almost a portable console with the dual joycon controllers.

Let's not kid ourselves; if that had been how it was unveiled, discussion would be "LOL good luck with that Nintendo, nobody buys handhelds anymore, my iPad is way more powerful than that"
I don't think that's true. It's 176 vs 150 (switch).
To be fair I'm quite skeptical about third party support. And Skyrim isn't that demanding considering the upgrades over last gen.
I think you can't achieve parity that's a given, but considering the amount of work to port games on a weaker hardware 3rp party support will dry up quite fast.
The majority of the reveal was people playing it on the go. Nintendo may call it a home console, but they are already marketing it as a handheld.
People expecting PS4 specs in a handheld are crazy.
They don't want to do that because then they can't sell it at home console like prices. I'm only in at launch at 200 or lower. If its higher and at these specs I'm sitting on the sidelines until I grab it in a sale or some other technology comes along to entice those dollars away.
And yet the majority of the reveal was it being played on the go.I would suggest you to visit the official site of nintendo, even there they call it home console.
The DS (still my pick for best gaming system ever) had fantastic third party support, and the GBA was no slouch.
Why do people act like the handheld side (my primary gaming side) doesn't exist?
I don't think that's true. It's 176 vs 150 (switch).
To those asking about the Seasons of Heaven trailer, it's PC footage. Devs are in line for a Switch dev kit but they do not have one atm.
It's running in an engine confirmed to be supported on Switch, but the devs do not yet have a dev kit or final specs to develop for.
A lot of that cost is cramming everything into the form factor of a phone. A ipad with similar innards and a larger form factor is like $200. Same thing for Samsung tablets.
Nintendo needs an economic stable platform to replace the WiiU disaster and the shrinking 3DS market first.
What happens post-Switch or even alongside is a different topic. And it's already pretty safe to assume that Nintendo will change quite a lot in the next decade.
I don't think that's true. It's 176 vs 150 (switch).
On a more grounded conversation, Nintendo markets it as a home console. And as a home console; Switch is slow. As a handheld, it's the opposite.
Wat?? Well then, the dream of seeing FFXV on Switch is not dead yet!
It's kind of interesting, that Digital Foundry in there YouTube Video explained, why most Pads can go away with better specs. Those devises are not designed to be push to those high states for more than maybe one hour. Anything beyond that point, heats up the machine and drags down framerate hard. Nintendo needs the Switch be constant for up to four hours or even more. So the X1 needs to stay cool for longer time and therefore don't reach its full-potential.Let's not kid ourselves; if that had been how it was unveiled, discussion would be "LOL good luck with that Nintendo, nobody buys handhelds anymore, my iPad is way more powerful than that"
Xbone S - $249
PS4 Slim - $249
Nvidia Shield TV - $200this is just to play around a bit
So yeah, good luck selling the Switch at $300 - $350.
CPU 1.9GHzPixel C would be a better comparison. Same chip set, down clocked for portability.
Yeah Skyrim isn't super demanding and I don't think DS3 is either. But I think as long as the switch sells decently that 3rd party will put the extra effort into porting.
I remember there being a quote from someone about the switch being easy to port to. Maybe that still holds true. I'm hoping for the Switch to get as many 3rd party AAA titles as possible over it's lifetime.
With developers already making games for PS4pro/Scorpio and working to get them on PS4/XBone it wouldn't be a huge deal to get them on Switch too
I don't think that's true. It's 176 vs 150 (switch).
