Digital Foundry: Performance Analysis: Destiny on Xbox One

No, that's not the same at all...

MS coming in to help optimise Destiny, thus making Bungie work longer on PS4 would give us a forever cycle and the game would never get released. The PS4 version matched their vision, and they tried to get the Xbone there but couldn't. Doing more to the PS4 version (without, I dunno, help from Sony?) would cost extra money for absolutely no reason.

"Absolutely no reason"? The reason would have been to please a very small minority! That's definitely worth it!

I have a hard time believing Bungie's ultimate vision for the game (visually) included garbage AA and poor draw distance.

Can't we all just be happy the two next-gen versions are relatively equal instead of whining that the PS4 version could have theoretically performed better? Some of this fanboyism is completely ridiculous.

It's not theoretical considering the hardware differences, and it's not about platform preference, but having the game in the best possible form. That's the reason why people buy remasters, and I'd wager people want the MC collection in the best possible form as well.

There's been eight years of PS3 development and most third-parties have gotten things straightened out. Fuck, even Valve. If a $500M budget can't get you some good PS3 talent, then I don't know what Bungie's doing. I just think parity between the PS4 and Xbone existing while there isn't any between the PS3 and 360 is ridiculous.

Yea! I mean I don't see how they didn't put that 8 years of PS3 experience to work. WTF Bungie?

What did you want it to be? It is looking way better than ps3 so it is definitely a new gen game.

You guys realize this game was originally designed to run on the Xbox 360 and PS3, right?

It wasn't a next gen game that was downported.

Yet they had high ambitions for the engine powering Destiny:

Bungie engineering lead Chris Butcher said Destiny’s engine is “fully multithreaded for performance on all platforms, both for today and the next ten years” when speaking to press at a preview event, as reported by OXM.

“We have an entirely new graphics engine and a fully featured world builder that gives out artists more expressive power than they’ve ever had before,” he added.

“Over the last four years we have built a truly state of the art engine. It’s by design multiplatform; it’s highly multithreaded, scales very well to the current generation and the future generation of hardware,” senior graphics architect Hao Chen chimed in.

http://www.vg247.com/2013/02/19/desting-engine-state-of-the-art-to-last-the-next-ten-years/

It's very understandable that the level and encounter design has to be limited to what can run on PS360, but apart from that Bungie's ambition is to be state-of-the-art. I would not call the game a current-gen up-port.

I have a hard time believing Bungie's ultimate vision for the game (visually) included garbage AA and poor draw distance.

You're very naive about how difficult it is to make a unified engine then. You have to remember, no matter how busy Destiny becomes in its raids, it needs to perform a consistent framerate with consistent graphics. The game is not set to the highest graphics the PS4 can perform in freaking Old Russia story missions, it will assume three people all using techniques with about 15-20 enemies all shooting, some rockets, big freaking particle effects and shaders coming in and out... -- all while perfectly syncing up gameplay with all players.

I don't think Destiny is the best looking game ever, but regardless of what either of these consoles are capable off (remember this is year 1 for them), Destiny is doing a lot of that with a consistent frame rate.

If their vision wasn't what it is, then you are saying Bungie decided to make Destiny look worse on the PS4 to match the Xbone. If that was their plan, it would have been done before we got a 900p beta. And even if that was the case, that they can patch the PS4 version to look so much better with little to no work, then tuff, because the truth is even the Xbone version can look better than it does. More dev time, better optimisation. MS coming in didn't do much that Bungie weren't aware off, it just costs money to keep devving. Destiny looks nice enough. The people who are critical of the game don't want better graphics, they want more worlds and features etc.

But it is nice to know that if you were Activision you would tell Bungie to stop adding in more content and make the engine handle better AA and draw distances.

The X1's GPU isn't similar to a 260x (the 260x is probably quite a bit better), it's more like the 260 in terms of shaders, although even the 260 would probably perform better.

Point remains that you don't get anywhere near double the framerate with the same settings, not until you get to at least 280x standard which is way above PS4.

Higher AA+AF for one. The game does look pretty good on its own, but it pales in comparison to something like Killzone, and knowing the XB1 version runs the game the same makes it obvious there was room for improvement. It's disappointing in a sense, that you have something you like, but you know it could have been even better.

I hate to break it to you, but even Killzone could have looked better. Hell, with about a year they probably could have gotten it running at 1080p.

Bravo!

But think of the pixel counters... to some people comparing pixel counts in games is more important than playing them.

Destiny looked beautiful on my PS4 last night. If there were compromises they aren't apparent. The cross-gen design decisions have been much more impactful than pixel count.

Just wish it was fun.

Disgraceful. Bungie must still have some deep rooted ties to M$ for them to force parity onto such a huge game as this. One that is basically exclusive to PS4, even. THe PS4 is 40% more powerful the the Xbox loss and Bungie is not taking advantage of it why? It should be 60fps on PS4 but Halo posters still hang from the walls of Bungies bathroom for them to jerk off to and they can't bring themself to make a proper game.

Only played one mission so far but it looked noticeably better than in the beta. Glad to see the bump to 1080 didn't hurt the framerate.

Of course it could have, but they did the best with the time and resources they had. That doesn't seem to be the case here, considering more effort was put on the other version.

And Killzone's SP campaign does run at 1080p. I've only played the multiplayer once, as PVP is not my cup of tea.

Please tell me this is a joke.

So you are not happy with its aa? Is it ruining your experience? How is this game any better with different aa? Sometimes i get a feeling people just want ammunition for a silly war.

What the hell? Wtf is up with the AF in this shot? Doesn't decent AF cost next-to-nothing to implement? What possible reason could Bungie have had to not implement better AF?

Sorry for the 21 questions :P

I take it you didn't read what I posted past the first sentence.

I ll wait for the face-off before calling it parity. I feel like the ratail release on ps4 looks better then it did during beta but maybe my minds playing tricks on me

....and I'm heading back to the OT

Killzone does run in 1080p.

I know it does for SP. I'm making a short joke about its MP.

Of course it could have, but they did the best with the time and resources they had. That doesn't seem to be the case here, considering more effort was put on the other version.

So you don't think Bungie spent their dev time well? Considering they had to simultaneously release 4 console versions at the same time, and considering how many people they have working on the team, and how many times they added something, then took it away, or how much time it took to add in content and make it fit in the world vs. optimising... bla bla bla I could go on, the simple thing to say is that you couldn't know.

Calling Bungie lazy devs is quite the generalisation.

Also why would it matter if you play SP instead of MP? Clearly you got the joke I was making =P.

From the screenshots I've seen on GAF, it looks like the AA has improved. Not sure about anything else, though. What else have you noticed?

Yeah not just the resolution bump. You can see where Bungie tuned the game on both platforms.

The shadows on both are a big improvement. They switched to dynamic resolution shadow routine.

I honestly can't tell if this is a joke, but it's amazing anyway :lol

Then maybe you should stop with the "feeling" and read what's there instead of relying on strawmen.

Brilliant. Absolutely agree.

So glad I bought this on the XB1. I was nervous some last minute changes would have me regretting not purchasing the PS4 version. I know it shouldn't matter as long as I'm having fun, but it would still bother me knowing my version was inferior.

You're arguing against yourself because something with limited technical ambition should have higher image quality than more demanding games piling on more advanced effects.

How is this game any better with different aa?
How is it better? It looks better and there's less distracting pixel crawling.

Better anisotropic filtering - you get to appreciate the impressive art from all angles.

Seems like it was a good enough reason for Bungie to improve the X1 version.
You mean MS stepping in? Destiny only ran at 900p on Xbox One without Microsofts help.

I'm amazed that people still blame Bungie for accepting microsofts help.

I never can tell with tetsuo but I guess I'll just laugh at all of the grammatical errors.

Well, maybe you should have mentioned it in the first place.
I hate to break it to you, but even Killzone could have looked better. Hell, with about a year they probably could have gotten it running at 1080p.
It seemed to me you were either misinformed, or just generalizing the whole game according to its MP part. It's hard to know here whether someone is trying to make a joke or not.

I don't really appreciate changing my words into something like "Bungie is lazy", when all I said is they've put more effort into the other version. Seemingly, on the expense of another, as they've got limited time and resources as well.

Gee, thanks for the parity, Bungie.

Now you're going to make me have to decide which console to get it for.

Oh well, at least with parity we have nothing to fight over.

*checks thread* Oh...

I'm amazed that there are PS4 gamers having their enjoyment of a game affected by how it runs on an xbox one.

It's a cross-gen multi-platform game which doesn't seem to do much to push the PS4 hardware and Bungie is a talented dev so this is a little surprising, but not terribly so. This is great for Xbox One owners, I just hope people don't start trying to use it as an argument for hardware performance parity.

I'm conflicted by this news. On one end, it's great that Xbox One owners get the best technical performance and graphics quality the game offers (not better than PS4 but equal). On the other hand, it's simple fact that PS4 is significantly more powerful so it's a shame that didn't do anything to make the game look better on that platform (there are several areas in the game lacking in the graphics department, like lack of much AF and lack of object-based motion blur).

As a multi-console owner I say good job MS for getting the game to be comparable to the PS4 version. It was critical for this one for sure. However, here is a point to consider, I FULLY expected the PS4 version to be the superior version performance wise. It's looking like parity was achieved for the most part now. However, I purchased long ago due to exclusive content and my stated expectations above. How many other people did the same?

In fact, and I'm getting a bit off topic, at this point I have just become accustomed to purchasing multi-plats on PS4 because of performance expectations, install base, and possibly the strongest reason of all, habit.

Does the expectation that PS4 versions will perform better hurt MS? I would say yes, at least in my case. It's good to see them taking action with this and Diablo to counter this way of thinking but it may be too late. I'm starting to think of my Xbone as my X-clusive machine now.
