Digital Foundry: Performance Analysis: Destiny on Xbox One

Yup, but those numbers don't explicitly state "around double the framerate, with some extra bells and whistles" like some of these posts citing Tomb Raider claim it definitely translates to.

Exactly, build a PC with a R7 265 and one with an R7 260x (which is the closest to each console cards) and see if you get double the framerate at the same settings, you don't, nowhere near.

Yea, but a lot of people take the Tomb Raider example as, if the Xbox One running something at 1080/30 implies the PS4 can run it at 1080/60, which is basically what was being stated here.

Which is a bit silly considering that Tomb Raider is (and MGS for that matter) completely different in comparison to Destiny.

Enemy animations would look horrible if it were imho...

They would. But the way people tout the PS4 as a "vastly" superior system.

I don't know what they expected Bungie to do. It's almost like some people would rather see the XB1 version be 900 p so they could feel justified about owning a PS4. But it the two versions look identical, it's a travesty and The devs are horrible.

Considering the past differences between the multiplatform titles, they could have also increased the framerate on the PS4. The system's capabilities are obviously underutilized, when a launch game like Killzone manages to outshine it.

But PS4 definitely runs in higher framerate, but You dont see it, because its locked in 30hz.
Its the same situation like in Tomb Raider, where Xbone probably run in 40-45 in many scenarios, but You couldnt see, because it had locked framerate at 30hz.

---
The way people act on here, Destiny should of been rock solid 60 FPS on Ps4.

lol
Unfortunately some people here think, its possible ;\

It's hard to say what Destiny should be. All we know is that the PS4's extra resources and headroom are just sitting there unutilized.

I don't think either systems are pushed to the absolute maximum. So, you can make an argument for both. They made what they felt comfortable with and didn't feel the need to push the game to either systems limits.

Nah DF should be put on probation for writing subpar technical articles.

I don't think DF should be placed on GAF's shitlist, but the "tech analysis" of The Witcher 3's X1 demo was quite the joke. Where's the value in such an article when it focuses on a single platform, is based on a recording of the gameplay demo, and the game was still eight months away at the time of publication?

PS4 is not 2x Xbox One on Tomb Raider:DE. Xbox One is artificially locked at 30FPS, if it was unlocked it would surely average higher than 30 FPS, probably closer to 40 FPS.

We can still make good comparisons when Xbox drops below 30 fps. In those cases there is a 20fps gap at times. Even 29fps vs 49fps is a 69% advantage.
This is ignoring the fact that there are differences beyond frame rate, all in PS4's favor.

In situations where Xbox One was hitting 45fps PS4 could likely be hitting over 60fps, and you wouldn't see that because it was capped at 60fps.

This is a very silly way to compare the power of a system...

I would have expected a better AA solution, larger drawing distance or some other effect that can be cheaply tacked on in case some gpu power is left. Obviously we're not talking about a 30 vs. 60fps gap, but without any question pure spec wise a certain gap exists and an ambitious AAA title should make use of it imho.

Which would very, very rare if ever happened. TR did not run in 60hz on PS4 in any heavier scenario, where it definitely run in locked 30hz on Xbone.
Its not 100% difference, its at most 40%, remember that.

Not in cutscenes. Gameplay is too unpredictable to compare some second long moments. The best example is the rain zone, where Xbone is locked at 30hz, and PS4 is hovering in 40s all the time.

Heavy scenarios were not locked at 30fps on Xbox.

But Destiny is fine as it is! If MS never stepped in, the PS4 version would look exactly the same as the Xbone version would be 900p. Just because MS jumped in to do optimisation, doesn't mean Bungie would be inclined to spent more time making the PS4 just to make sure DF can say once again the PS4 is better.

They didn't take time away from working on PS4 graphics to up the Xbone.

Absolutely right. Grain of salt always taken with these articles. And we know they are out to milk these comparisons now, more than ever.

DF should not be banned, but I do think their quality has suffered considerably compared to their work in the PS360 era. They miss stuff regularly and their PC comparisons are often lackluster (Metro Redux coverage was crap).

Leadbetter also embarrassed himself in the Xbox One launch period and has a bit of a credibility problem. The recent trend of click baiting with many articles that could be covered in one feature doesn't help.

Don't get me wrong, I love DF but wish they would stop rushing stuff (e.g. doing framerate tests in irrelevant areas) and return to the old quality.

I thought it was established that Destiny wasn't going to set the world on fire for the new consoles. It's a last gen game, it wasn't made to be a looker for this gen.

Heavy scenarios were not locked at 30fps on Xbox.

I think You need to watch analysis again:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWWtm4Wq9QU
From 4:42 to 5:45, the Xbone is consistent in 30hz, where PS4 is 40-45. Thats not two times difference, its far from it. And this gameplay section is quite consistent in engine load out, so its really good comparison for locked fps scenario like here.

----
What? People want DF to get banned? What fanboy madness is this?
Quality is not always great, but come on, there is nothing wrong about their article. Actually they are better than 99% articles on gaming sites.

Yeah, kinda sad. But some better AA on the PS4 version would have been great.

Yeah, kinda sad. But some better AA on the PS4 version would have been great.

Some here have said that the AA on the PS4 has indeed improved. I only played 15 minutes and was unsure about it, so if they improved it at all, the improvement is probably only slight. There is still very visible pixel crawling everywhere.

Yeah, kinda sad. But some better AA on the PS4 version would have been great.

Yep, still in deferred rendered even the 2x MSAA could be too expensive. And it could not work properly without preparing rendering pipeline in specific way.
More taps for post processing, high LoDs etc are toggles that should be included though and maybe they are, but we need to wait for a full analysis.

Where's the heavy action? Shantytown shootouts are especially conspicuous in their absence.

Where did i say 'heavy action'? I said heavier, which means not looking at walls and running through environments that has almost no effects on screen, You know a situations where even Xbone could run in 60fps, but You dont see it, because of 30hz lock.
The best way to compare framerate in similar situation like TR, is to get consistent gameplay fragment from very comparable load that has drops in platform with higher fps cap. The fragment i mentioned does exactly that.
If You still dont get my point, which is completely obvious and logical btw, it means You're just trying to find something that fits Your theory, instead of operates of quantifiable facts.

It's great that they made one version the best that it could be, but not so great that they didn't give the same treatment to the other version. It seems that as soon as they reached their "target" on PS4 they stopped optimizing for it. even though there are still areas (like the AA solution) that could use some improvement.

As predicted multiplats will be held back by the less powefull plataform. The game is on 4 platforms its understandable I suppose. Still a shame if they can't manage anything better with PS4 given the difference in power.

At least Xbox One is now getting 1080p games.

Games that are developed exclusively for a console will have the opportunity to raise the bar.

I would agree with you if in fact bungie could not do better and the PS4 version performs about the same as the X1. That would be understandable if the PS4 was tough to optimize, but by all accounts that does not seem to be the case. So if both versions are really 1:1 similar I can only see two valid reasons for it: 1. The PS4 version locked at 30fps would have a noticeable (like 10fps) better framerate compared to the X1 version when unlocked. Thus GPU power has been left unused. Or 2. The bungie devs are not capable to optimize a PS4 game and both games perform about the same, because of a significantly better optimized X1 version.

In both cases I see a reason to be at least a bit upset. I think thats understandable.

Ok. I'm not going to argue with that.

Is it possible that -due to the two consoles having similar hardware aside from the memory setup ofc- bungie chose the X1 as lead platform and then ported the game over to the PS4 knowing that whatever they can run fluently on the X1 would cause no problem for the PS4?

I would do this way since it seems the most logical.

I bet both machines can pull Destiny probably 40fps in Old Russia, but what Bungie wanted was a SOLID 30fps, they designed a lot of the game around this. The reason why despite the PS4 version running better means nothing to them is because they would stress test the frame-rate in a debug mode with the max number of enemies with all 12 people fighting etc. and making sure it says at 30fps.

The XBone version was 900p before so that in the worse areas, it could achieve 30fps solid.

You really need to consider that they were DONE with the PS4 version in terms of graphics and then MS came in just to optimise the Xbone version more. Them going back would be a waste of time only to please salty people in this forum.

The X1's GPU isn't similar to a 260x (the 260x is probably quite a bit better), it's more like the 260 in terms of shaders, although even the 260 would probably perform better.

As someone who has a PS4 and does not have an Xbox One, I don't mind parity. If there is underutilization, no worries as long as it looks clean and runs well. Not every game needs to push boundaries.

Yet there isn't parity between the PS3 and 360 versions and those systems are far closer performance-wise than the PS4 and Xbone will ever be.

My friend has the PS4 version. He came over to see that my monitor was better than his and thought the graphics on Xbone were much better. He was genuinely upset lmao.

... Very different architectures and different sizes of RAM (PS3 has half) etc.

But as an earlier poster said, destiny was originally going to be 900p on Xbox until ms/kinect reservation kicked in

Yeah definitely - has always been the case, looking forward to seeing what can be done on something like uncharted or on halo 5... Should be a decent indication of what "platform specific" code can achieve.

Sniper Elite's probably the most similar recent game but more technically impressive/less artistically impressive.

Rebellion doesn't have the resources of Bungie but they achieved a decent level of anisotropic filtering and shadow resolution/filtering at over 30fps.

I never said anything about 60fps though. ;) Something just seems amiss when two platforms with similar but powerwise different GPUs run the game the same, when the other could have been used for increasing AA/AF/effects at least. It's not like you can't increase those on the PC, when the hardware allows it.

I think there is a difference but they made this article separately so that the difference wouldn't overshadow the statement that they wanted to make about Destiny being 1080P 30FPS on Xbox One without any cutbacks.

Can't we all just be happy the two next-gen versions are relatively equal instead of whining that the PS4 version could have theoretically performed better? Some of this fanboyism is completely ridiculous.

edit: fuck ninja edit

I could just argue the same way that they were also DONE with the X1 version at the time of the beta. So spending extra time with MS on the X1 version just to please salty Xbox fans is a waste of time. Frankly I don't think it is and its great that they got it working at 1080p, but I am disappointed in case they did not made a comparable effort to further optimize the PS4 version.

... Very different architectures and different sizes of RAM (PS3 has half) etc.

There's been eight years of PS3 development and most third-parties have gotten things straightened out. Fuck, even Valve. If a $500M budget can't get you some good PS3 talent, then I don't know what Bungie's doing. I just think parity between the PS4 and Xbone existing while there isn't any between the PS3 and 360 is ridiculous.

Consoles do not exist in vacuum. And difference in resolution, in most games released, is enough to cover this difference, which exactly why the difference between both is not that big and significant from development standpoint. PC however, are where the disparity problem starts to appear.

I got a 40% pay rise in work to £700 a week. But it's not actually that big because there are people who earn a million quid a week...

Double-down all you like, but you're being transparently disingenuous.

No, that's not the same at all...

MS coming in to help optimise Destiny, thus making Bungie work longer on PS4 would give us a forever cycle and the game would never get released. The PS4 version matched their vision, and they tried to get the Xbone there but couldn't. Doing more to the PS4 version (without, I dunno, help from Sony?) would cost extra money for absolutely no reason.
