Digital Foundry VS Bethesda: PS3 Skyrim is still shit

Listen, I'm a huge PS3 fan, but Sony has to own up to at least some of this. Not only did they launch a year later than the 360 (therefore giving Microsoft a bigger install base), but they also made the PS3 harder develop for given the complexity of the Cell architecture.

The truth of the matter is that Bethesda is not going to bother with the PS3 version because more money can be made with the 360 version. That's also one reason why Microsoft is getting the DLC first.

Check your calender buddy it's almost 2012.

I know you said in another topic that you weren't going to download the 1.2 patch ... Did you get these freeze's after installing that patch ? Because a lot of people said freezing increased after the 1.2 patch.

What's weird is that I've hardly had any freezes pre/post patch. Just a few over a pretty long period of play, usually extended play, over multiple characters.

So I don't get any freezing really... but I have the chronic framerate/slowdown/stuttering/hitching/coughing and wheezing...

I did download it a few days ago yes. But I wasn't having so many freezes so often as today.

Edit: I guess I'm thankful to DigitalFoundry/Eurogamer for the balls to report this problem in full. Thanks.

This is what's so mind boggling about this situation. One of the most high profile games of this generation is broken on one of the platforms that it was released on. Sites should be all over this story. Has anyone even reached out to Bethesda to get them to comment on it?

They should fix the problem completely or if they can't return the money to their costumers, I suppose there are laws about this, and we as costumers should punish these actions more severely.

Bethesdas PS3 efforts with Oblivion and Fallout 3 made me become a full time PC gamer acouple years ago. I only use the PS3 now for console exclusives.

Havet looked back, and I want to thank Bethesda for making me a PC gamer.

Well ... no. I haven't seen anything.

Shouldn't we also cry foul at the gaming journalism for not taking up this issue full force?

Technically it's grounds for a lawsuit against the company, but I don't think many have enough money to take on Bethesda's lawyers.

yup, sites like Gamespot, Giant Bomb etc mentioned on twitter that they never got the PS3 ver before reviews went up.

I love the site, but I'm 99% certain that even if Giantbomb had the PS3 version as well they wouldn't have reported it, since no one would have played it still.

This is all on Bethesda, buddy. If, in 2011, you're incapable of making a PS3 game that doesn't have game-breaking bugs, your either lazy or grossly incompetent. And as much as you say Bethesda doesn't give two craps about the PS3 (which I find to be true), they sure as hell don't mind taking PS3 gamer's money, and at that point they are obligated to ship out a working product (at the very least!!), regardless of what they may feel about the platform. This situation with Skyrim is inexcusable.

I don't know if there's much people can do. It's quite interesting (and sad) that several sites decided to run stories about the Uncharted 3 review reactions, but Bethesda releasing a broken game isn't newsworthy.

Bethesda hid the PS3 version from reviewers, and reviewers obediently just copy and pasted their 360 review into their PS3 review.

Pathetic really, whenever a developer does not give you both versions to review, it means they're hiding something, but these game "journalists" can't be bothered to ask questions.

Yeah, if reviewers didn't get sent the ps3 version then they shouldn't have done a ps3 review at all. Acting like it's not their fault afterwards is pathetic.

Happy I waited and stuck it on my Christmas List, I didn't have a lot of problems with FO3 but NV was a bit of a mess when it first came out, after that I decided to just not bother with their games at release and just get them further down the line.

Hopefully it will be fixed by Christmas, if Bethesda couldn't do the PS3 versions on their own they should have brought someone else in to help instead of releasing and having to deal with the mess afterwards.

Honestly this is bullshit but i havent encountered any freezes but prepatch some stuttering, but after the patch i havent encountered any problems really. Lvl 23, over 40 hrs played and my save is 8.5 mb right now.

Lol. No.

One more patch before Christmas and that's only to fix the things they broke with the 1.2 patch. After the next patch, Bethesda is shutting down for the Holidays and won't start work again until January.

Terrible business practices. Sure spend Christmas with your family, but don't ignore your shitty hackjob port that people actually spent money on ... Ugh. Oh well.

Encountered my first stutter on 360 during a Daedric quest, lasted a few secs then gone, didn't reload the game though, kinda weird, LV40 and 65hrs in the game, no install. Guess the problem is not just on PS3.

This same sort of thing happened to me with New Vegas on PC. Every time I got over a certain amount of saves the frame rate would drop down to between ~10-15 outside of combat and less than 10 during combat (compared to before when I was getting between 50-60 FPS). Also VATS was completely useless (it would take over a minute just to load the hitzones without stats).

Luckily for me I haven't had too many problems outside of crashing after fast travel with Skyrim.

Has anyone ever asked for a refund on Steam before for a game? Did they ever get a refund or at least credit of some sort? This game is a real pile, performance has gotten worse and CTD more frequent for me.

So, PS3 gamers are a bunch of spoiled children, who knew!?

Don't get me wrong, bitch about online passes and stuff. But don't bitch about getting "360 ports" because they don't match your magical expectation levels. The market has shifted: PS3 is a minority focus, just be glad you're getting some of the titles that the 360 gets and buy them. It seems like some people on PS3 simply don't do that because "LOL XBOX PORT!" :/

People throwing their arms up and whining and going "why aren't they supporting us!?" when they attempt to (even if poorly) is crazy.

You are a good poster but that is a very, very stupid post.

Beth needs changes in the crew, this is beyond tolerable. I am guessing Todd Howard needs either a demotion or a straight kick out of the studio.

Yeah, it was actually superior as I recall. Better streaming and textures I think. I'm also fairly certain the 360 version was later patched to bring it up to parity. Or thereabouts, not sure how close they were post-patch.

Oblivion had a ton of issues with 5mb+ save files too, but they would rarely get that high.

I didn't know about this, that's seriously shitty. Special thanks have to go to Bethesda for releasing the game in this state, Sony for certifying it and game reviewers for not mentioning it at all.

People pitching in this thread saying "I'm a PC gamer, oh well." and shit about PC--shut the fuck up. No one cares. Sorry to be blunt, but good lord.

Us PS3 players are trying to be vocal and find the problem and fix it.

Do you think sony should have played the game over 30hrs to experience this? Sony is not to blame here imo, reviewers who copy paste 360 reviews and beth for putting it out in this ridiculous state.

I see your point, but every Bethesda game for PS3 has had problems which only manifest themselves after a long time playing. Fool me once, etc.

So this shit is still happening and will continue to happen for the PS3 version even after December?

Mine is still plastic wrap+factory sealed. I'm wondering if I should just return it to Best Buy for store credit and wait for a Steam sale on the PC version...

From this point on, they might have to. While this might not be something they normally do in their certification process, they might have to make an exception for Bethesda. Considering that this problem has occurred in multiple games by Bethesda, this should raise a flag that they need to institute longer testing period specifically for Bethesda's games.

The Digital Foundry video is absolutely shocking. Seeing as I mainly game on the PS3, I'm glad I held back on buying this at launch. Think I'll wait for the inevitable GOTY edition. Or should that be WGOTY edition?

IGN has all three of their PS3 editors playing the PS3 version. They talked about the patch on the podcast, but none of them were having any major issues. I suspect what DF is showing in the video is not representative of the average player. It is probably cherry picked to be worse case.

Actually, Digital Foundry posit that the problem is caused by memory issues. They proved this to be the case by loading a large save file, and then starting a new game: stuttering is then witnessed in the new game. If this is the case, then it is likely to be inevitable for ALL players, eventually.

Surely the best solution would be to periodically 'reset' areas, thereby reducing the save size? I can quite happily believe that the body of the rat I killed 65 hours ago may now have gone, or that the owner of the cup I stole 50 hours ago has now replaced it with a new one, or the barrel which I knocked over has now been picked up. I guess certain areas, dungeons and whatever, could be tagged as 'un-resetable', but allow habitable locales to reset themselves over time?

Or they haven't played enough for their save file to exceed 6MB.

Seems like Digital Foundry's experience is more in line with the average player.

It's a good thing you have such insight into Giantbomb decisions. While you're at it, can you tell me what new subscriber features we can expect for next year?

i'll laugh if this game wins goty anywhere. it's utterly broken, and i'm talking both gameplay and tech.

still enjoying the game, but it could've been so much more.

Get ready to laugh, because it's going to inevitably win many by how the media gushed over the game and blew off these fatal game issues.

I'm at 74 hours so far and my save file is almost 10 megs and it definitely stutters like in the video. It's really bad. Everytime the framerate goes down to almost zero it feels like the game is crashing. I want to continue badly, because i love the game but playing like that is no fun.

This is what sucks the most about this issue... people who encounter this issue has played the game for so long and there's so much time invested.

Great game on Xbox/PC.

Flawed game on PS3 held back by people who can't code for PS3 6 years in, and the PS3 QA who didn't catch this gamebreaking flaw that apparently a full third of the PS3 users are experiencing. A rarity or odd one-time occurence is forgivable, but a bug that occurs and has occurred in previous Bethesda RPGs on PS3? Good lord.

Bethesda should go back to only working on the PC version of the game while outsourcing the console ports. All of their PS3 releases were like this except for Oblivion which was outsourced.

Played both fallout games at my friend's and they are broken beyond repairs.

Fallout 3 on PS3 becomes unplayable if you play a lot and do every quests. The Broken Steel add on becomes impossible to beat as the game will crash every 2 min in the final battle (huge firefight). The more you play the more unstable the game becomes and will freeze more often.

Same is true for New Vegas. By the time you are at the last battle in the legion's camp the game will have turned into a slideshow and will crash often.

The only remedy to this is to rush through the game. If you don't play for too long the performance won't drop.
