Disgaea: Hour of Darkness: Need tips.

I've been playing this game for a couple of days and I'm really enjoying it. Really steep learning curve, but I'm slowly leveling stuff up.

I was wondering about something. Are there any tips you could give me so I can get maximum enjoyment and progress out of this game in the early going?

Get into the Item World ASAP and start recruiting some specialists. It's not necessary to go for high level items immediately: learn the basics with some basic items. Once you start amassing large amounts of specialists, put them onto weapons and then level up to obtain bonuses conferred by the specialists. Also, learn the ins and outs of geopanels so you can exploit both the main game and the item world. Apart from that, Disgaea is very much an individual experience that has the potential for unlimited depth (i.e. level grinding) based upon your dedication and patience.

I could never really get into that darn game, it was way too open-ended for my tastes. I loved the characters and the voice acting though.

start collecting statician specialist up to 300 of them as it increase the experience you get, then get some gladiator and start power levelling, that's about it

Statisticians give you more experience.

Spears are pretty bad. It might seem nice to hit from two squares away but this gets useless fast and the weapons are too weak.

Speaking of useless, the three prinnies you start with are not worth the effort to train.

Early on it helps to have Laharl mentor a cleric/priest-type character so he can learn a basic cure spell.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that early game it's way better to train a fire mage than ice or wind, though you'll eventually need one of each to unlock a star mage.

Also, male clerics have stupid voices. Choose the female.

EDIT2: Keep using swords with Laharl at least until you get the Blade Rush ability, which helps
in the first boss fight
.

Somewhere in the Ice stage (I think) there is a level with a bunch of the cat ladies/demon chicks. All the squares are covered by a invincible geopanel except one. Follow these steps.

1. Choose a character to level

2. Find the enemy with the lowest DEF or RES depending on how the person your leveling attacks.

3. Throw every enemy in the level on top of your chosen enemy.

4. Bring the enemy to the one square that isn't invincible.

5. Beat the shit out of the enemy.

6. Gain massive amounts of experience.

I'm not to far in the game, so there very well are probably better ways down the road to gain experience. But this method rocks for me currently.

For maximum progress, listen to these guys.

For maximum enjoyment, don't listen to these guys. Play at your own pace and don't worry about levelling. You'll beat the story long before you get to level 100, at which point you can decide if you want to powerlevel.

The maximum enjoyment comes from playing the game and not asking for help :D.

My tip about the male cleric's terrible voice is essential to anyone's enjoyment of the game.

Also my tip about the sword ability... it'd be relatively frustrating to try to get past a certain point without anybody using swords.

lol, I quit the game cause I couldn't grind anymore, so thats why I didn't give tips :D.

Use the master/pupil strategy, so that you can get usefyl spells for your characters and level up more characters thanks to the combo attacks (that have a higher % of success if done by master/pupils).
Don't waste too much time grinding initially, the game can be completed without too much need for grinding, and grinding too much can get the fun out of the game.
Instead, progress at your pace and simply try to grab some staticians and the ones that add HP/STR from some of the lower level items so you can put them into better items.
Then finish the game and start again with a New Game+ so you can get the other various endings AND now you can grind much easier and unlock the various special stages.

And don't forget to reincarnate often, as that is a key to get stronger.

When you want to level up a bit, until you unlock
Cave of Ordeal
, use either the item world, or some of the levels with the 50% bonus panels (I think the
Mid Boss
level has one).

I just had the most awesome item world run. REALLY down to the wire.

Basically I was blazing through, leveling guys up, killing stuff, etc. I had almost all my guys on the battlefield.

Well, I wasn't paying attention to the distance between myself and an enemy and I accidentally attacked a Geo Symbol when I meant to hit the enemy. BOOM! Like 6 chain reactions wiped out my party.

I had to make it 4 floors with a badly damaged Etna and some low level clerics.

Finally got to the last one and just did manage to toss one of the clerics onto the dimensional gate before a higher-level bad guy could slaughter my 2 (that's right TWO) remaining characters.

Wow. This game is freaking awesome.

I hope you like Grinding Speevsters cause this game gives you the ability to grind to your hearts content!

I don't mind it, as the battles are really entertaining and rewarding.

Same reason I didn't mind "grinding" in Dragon Quest VIII.

Yeah, I am about half-way through. I over-powered my chars due to item world. I think I may just hook up my ps2 again and play it. The main reason I stopped is I have a reallllly small tv in my studio...(Lack of space).

I just did this and it worked like a charm, though I'm worried that I've broken the game.

You've most likely broken the story, buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut there are much much much stronger enemies than anything you'll find in the story mode.

edit: If you only did it once then you probably didn't break anything.

Yeah, just once. I have a level 29 Laharl now, though.
are past the thing about the penguins, dunno what part of the game that was but thats around the time I quit cause of grinding :(.

You don't yet have access to the stuff that breaks the game, and it would take FOREVER using that method to even get to the point where you can
destroy the demonic assembly and pass whatever you want
. And even then there is stuff that will destroy you.

Also, level swords on all the characters you intend to keep around for the long haul.

You'll only be stronger than the competition for a little while. The last boss is level 100.
