Disgaea PC [coming February 2016]

Omg Phantom Brave.

Secret best N1 game.

i remember this one clearly because it was one of the things i originally strongly disagreed with amir0x on. it took me five years to return to it and when i did, everything clicked and it was awesome.

i also really love soul nomad. that guy's super looked over. never played makai kingdom though. i didn't even know it came out until way later and at that point i had no interest in it.

ZHP next!

Disgaea isn't really a very skeevy game. There's games that absolutely deserve that descriptor, but this isn't one of them.

Yeah, this is from NI's PS2 era where they'd make fun of that (and a ton of other stuff) instead of dead-eyedly go thru those motions.

in nippon ichi's fiscal report year ending 2015, they mentioned that they would start supporting steam: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1046782

welp, this is it. it's more than testing the waters too. it's more of an initiative to get the company on steam, so if there are other games that can be ported, they'll surely do it (firefly diary seems like a logical choice bcause it was already listed and everything). they have a pretty good backlog too, with not only disgaea, but others on the ps2 like soul nomad, la pucelle, phantom brave, and makai kingdom. if this is successful enough, i wonder if they'd even localize way older stuff like the latter two marl kingdom games.

Don't forget GrimGrimoire. Would love to see that released on Steam.

I will not be expecting them to redo the games sprites and the images on the first page look like there's a filter that can probably be disabled. The maps themselves look crisp though. I'd gladly lay down 29.99 for this, but I'm hoping for 15 or 20 because of the game being so old and the sales that will be lost from people who don't care to spend that kind of money on a good game.

I think 29.99 for an old game like this is just asking for it to be buried in the dark depths of steam. I'm wondering what the price will be for this myself because $10 would easily make it reachable within everyone's pocket. People would just buy it to buy it.

Yeah, I hope they price it right. I played quite a bit of the first one on the PS2 but never beat it. Depending on how it goes I'll be jumping in day one, this will be the perfect podcast game.

$15 with a discount that it pushes it to $10 for the first week would be perfect.
NIS has a huge SRPG library to work with.

I doubt it'll be that cheap. Cladun X2 is a barebones port and it costs $20 but with a 40% off launch discount. This one seems to have quite a bit more work.
I think $30 and 40-50% off launch discount is what we want. I hope they're up to date with the launch discount offers other companies with sucessful steam ventures do.

I'm glad PC players will finally get to play these wonderful games (assuming they'll release the sequels if this one does well).

Disgaea has become my favorite game series over the last decade. I encourage anyone who likes deep turn-based strategy games to give it a shot. It's easy enough to ignore the anime style narrative if that's not your thing. I've never seen an anime or had any desire to, but the mechanics of these games are so good it that I still put 100+ hours into every release.

Come on now if PC players really wanted to play it they would had been used emulators. Should had been the latest one. Yeah I know its all about support but none of the stories really relate to one another. I haven't played 5 yet but 4 is my favorite of the series. I hated 3 and didnt care about 1 or 2.

We're not in a hypothetical 'if they wanted to play' situation. It's coming, it's a niche series and it's in a genre PC exclusive players like, a lot. So yeah, again: Introducing the series. It's actually a smart decision because they can go in with a low price-point, which they couldn't do with Disgaea 5.

Emulators are even more niche. They really don't factor in with sales and awareness situations like this.

Oh man. I first learned about Disgaea by finding out about Ulillillia and his obsessive videogame habits.

Bought the DS version and spend the next week grinding almost all day for - well, I don´t know what for exactly. For that next pointless level up, probably.

If there´s ever been a game I associate with (unhealthy) grinding, it´s this one. But I still have fond memories of it. The level up jingle still triggers the pleasure center in my brain.

My PC sucks, but if I had a decent one, I'd probably buy it again. Disgaea 1 is still the only good game in the series.

I already have this on a couple of platforms so I'm not sure I'll be buying it day one but it's still cool to see more stuff like this on Steam.

I have the PS2, PSP, DS and PS3 classics versions, I'll definitely get it down the line, but not at 20$ (or even 15$).

Cladun X2 bombed though. Unless NIS plans on disappearing from Steam for another couple years, I'd rather they not attempt anything risky, especially with their bread & butter. I'm not sure where the "quite a bit more work" is coming from either. It's very much in-line with what Ghostlight, Idea Factory, and others have been doing for their ports (which have all been reasonably priced with meaty discounts). Afternoon of Darkness is $15 on PSN. There's really nothing to be gained from going above that price-point.

NIS should be taking advantage of the fact that they have a massive library. They can create a very sustainable source of revenue, and the first step is getting Disgaea 1 into the hands of everyone.

Cool.

Being the massive Disgaea fan that I am, even this announcement surprised me.

More Disgaea for everyone is ALWAYS a good thing.

I guess I'll be triple dipping. (First the PS2 release, then the PSP, and now on Steam too)

I do hope they are using the PSP version as a baseline without the Foresight glitch.

I am not expecting a massive resolution bump, but I expect a respectable release that is in-line with the PS2 or PSP game.

Now if they could retrofit the Disgaea 4 / D2 / 5, HD sprites into the original game this MIGHT be good, but some of the original monsters and classes from the original Disgaea never got redrawn, so I'm not expecting them to go the extra mile there.

Still, excellent news, all in all.

My PC sucks, but if I had a decent one, I'd probably buy it again. Disgaea 1 is still the only good game in the series.

Story line is up to personal preference, but mechanically in terms of gameplay systems, each subsequent game was superior than the previous one. If you own a PS4, you really should give Disgaea 5 a try.

Disgaea 1 is still the only good game in the series.

One of my favorite SRPGs, such joy to play and I like the characters and story. Cheesy and fun. Hope it exceeds their expectations and port more Disgaea.

Steamspy has it at over 10k sales, which is not really that bad for a super niche title that was stealth released and not discounted much. Hell, that's more than Trails in the Sky SC has sold.

You do know when Cladun and when Trails SC came out right? You're comparing a game that's not even a month old and a game that's 3 years old. 10k sales for a 3 year old game is absolute shit, it doesn't help that they've almost never had sales on it and won't even fix issues that have been around since launch.

Sweet. I haven't played a Disgeae game in probably a decade. That sounds like a good cooldown period before getting back into another of these crazy games.

Don't get the nitpicks of starting off with the first Disgaea instead of the latest one. The first is a great game and a great introduction for those that never played it. Priced right, it'll bold well for the other sequels to come (look at Idea Factory's Nep-Nep series). The important part for NIS is to make sure people can get their hands on it for an affordable price.
