I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
Japan DGAF.

You don't throw cash at their public companies or do hostile takeovers, without government approval, which is close to not happening. This has even lesser chances than Nvidia buying out ARM which the UK is thinking of blocking fearing anti-trust issues stemming from Nvidia.

From the actual article (if anyone bothered to read it, and if anything from the outlet is worthy of reading):

"...It sounds like Disney is possibly offering to buy out Spider-Man rights, or buy Sony’s film division, although our source said they are considering buying Sony, which doesn’t rule out a merger/acquisition. ..."

Just reading the article, it sounds like the author of the article didn't fully read and/or adequately understand the information they were presented. But the text I emboldened seems like the only viable information for consideration.

Well, they did pay $4B to George Lucas for Star Wars. Which is bigger, Star Wars or Spiderman?
No way would they be able to purchase Sony as a whole.

Can’t buy Japanese companies like that. The Government , as far as I remember, does not allow that to happen to their industries.

Holy shit if that happens. It would mean Disney owns Playstation. Which would make things highly interesting.
I mean, this is probably a bullshit news, but if ever Disney buy Sony, Sony would be fucked

Disney has Midas touch nowadays, except all they touch doesn't turn into gold, but into diarrhea

That will never happen. The article also hints at it. If at all, the rights or the film division will be bought.

Sony has extremely high revenue divisions that most have never heard of, such as financial divisions, camera sensors (every iPhone has one from Sony, for example) and many many more.

Are you joking?! Disney could easily buy Sony outright. Sony is a small fish compared to the likes of Apple, Amazon, Google, Microsoft etc.
That's not quite true. Sony has been making significantly more revenue than Disney for years. So to say Disney is bigger than Sony is at least debatable.

As I said, most people think of Sony in terms of electronic devices and video games. And that couldn't be further from reality.

Spiderman is an IP you wouod never let go of. I know Sony doesn't have the rights to Spidey in video games, is that something Disney can fuck them over with?

I wouldn’t say easily buy it. It still is a 300m company buying a 120m company, which is a stretch. One thing to highlight that Facebook, Microsoft, Google, Apple and Amazon are on another tier of size.

Add Samsung to the list as well

4 biggest revenue contributors for Sony last year were( in billions)

Gaming 25
Electronics 18
Imaging and products 9
Music 8
Pictures 7

So it’s still mainly games and electronics

More of a question for everyone instead of a reply but really interested to know how the sony financial service business does and whether it has any impacts on their cash-on-hand balance. I probably have some incorrect assumptions.

I wish this would happen (Disney buying spidey) so the games can go multiplatform, i miss the old spidey games.
But everyone with a single braincell understands they are not going or even trying to buy Sony.
On top of that Japan would never allow this takeover to happen.

My goodness there are a lot of people in here rage defending a videogame system....in their adult years...and trying to hold the intellectual high ground. The irony is delicious.

Disney could indeed buy Sony 3 times over. However why would they dump money into a non-profitable dumpster fire of a company?

Wait they did buy ESPN....lol

They could if they wanted to, but you can’t buy a Japanese brand that easily, their government has strict rules against it.
Again Sony IS NOT profitable if you review all their divisions. Who would buy it?

Although the thought of Disney using the PS as the exclusive way to play their IP's games would be hilarious.

Disney can't buy Sony, they straight up can't afford it. Microsoft certainly could, but they would then have to deal with Japanese regulators.

The timeline that Microsoft buys Sony would be fascinating however. What would we even get? Xstation? Playbox? Or just a brand new name? Pretty funny to think about.

You know, basic fact check via an internet search engine is not that hard.

$9 billion dollar yearly profit.

While Playstation is the biggest money maker, it is not the only one:

Sony is also flush with cash (obviously not as much as Microsoft, but few companies are):

Honestly it doesn't make sense for Disney to be buying anybody right now. I'm sure Covid is messing up a lot of their business from the parks to the movie going plus aren't they still hurting from the fox merger.

Plus their net worth are both around a 100 billion.

Sooner or later, Spidey will be on PC. Nixxes wasn't bought to port some small franchises or unknown games.
I see going to PC not really multiplatform.
Also while the last Spiderman game was quite good, i really liked the Ultimate Spiderman games those were actually more fun to play imho.

9 billion dollars in income and the company is NOT profitable?
Thats 9,000,000,000 dollars.....they could give every person on the planet a dollar and still have made a profit.
