Disney about to purchase all of Sony for Spider-Man rights?

Imagine a world with the Disney Playstation.

God of War would become Prince of Swords.
The Last of Us would rebrand as A Girl's Tale.
Ghost of Tsushima repackaged as Spirit of a Samurai.
Days Gone ignored and the trademark left to lapse.
DisneyStation?!

Just like how all the Marvel properties got watered down right.
Everyone was worried Disney buying Marvel would lead to:

Because Jim Ryan is the leader of Sony right...
He is... He dethroned Andrew House and banished him to far away lands. Jim now sits on the Sony throne, rulling with an iron hand. He alone decides the fate of all Sony.

We are in 2021 and some are still unable to do a basic research before shit posting, while others believes that Jim and Phil are the supreme rulers of Sony and Microsoft...

The problem is that Sony isn't just an entertainment IP company, and it has a fuck ton of employees across many sectors so this would be an incredibly large and complex operation that would have them then spin off rather large sectors of the company.

But just so we're clear, this wouldn't be bad news for Playstation fans and would basically render the brand eternal and turn Xbox and Nintendo into puppy competitors.

Regarding straight up aquisition of Spiderman rights, well, Sony is in a position of financial strength so Disney has 0 leverage there.

A merger might make sense if Disney believes videogames are the future cash cow, but it still sounds completely unreasonable.

It means buying Sony out of their rights to Spider-Man, not buying the actual company. It’ll never happen. Spidey property makes Sony too much money. It would cost Disney more than Marvel and Star Wars out together and then some.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
umm. Sony doesn't own Spider-Man

they just have the movie rights
Yeah they just own the rights to every character in the Spider Man universe for live action films,
it's just the movie rights, not that important..😐

Disney could probably buy Sony outright, they have a massive market cap, like 3-4x that of Sony, depending...BUT you would have to be half past stupid to think this is real.
That being said, stranger things have happened.

Their market cap doesn't matter...... Market cap is how many shares are outstanding multiplied by their value. The private shareholder own those shares, NOT Disney.

Disney cannot use their market cap to buy another company.

Right now Disney have less cash on hand (16 billion) than Sony.... and Disney have a load of long term debt (50 billion)

Sony, which is not purchasable due to being a protected Japanese company...... would theoretically cost well over 150 billion and leave Disney in so much debt they would be in a financial crisis, much like AT&T has been for the last few years.

First of all you are comparing them without consideration for macro economics, Japan came out of a decades long recession and suffers from sensitivity to exchange rate swings.

Sony is still in the top 3 or 4 most valuable companies in Japan and is protected from acquisition by the government.

Also Sony have more cash on hand than Disney, make more profit each year in recent times and have way less debt than Disney.
Disney are already straddled with over 50 billion in longterm debt and there is no chance that they can even afford to buy Sony.

Market cap is not something Disney can use, the shares belong to share holders, not Disney.

Don't pass gaas, it is your Destiny!
Hope they do, it was rumored a long time ago as well. If these venomverse movie flop won’t have much of a choice. Without Disney guidance can they even make a good spider man movie any more? Sure spiderverse was neat but they fired all the creatives for the sequel so who knows if that will be more then a small cash in now.

I wish this would happen (Disney buying spidey) so the games can go multiplatform, i miss the old spidey games.
But everyone with a single braincell understands they are not going or even trying to buy Sony.
On top of that Japan would never allow this takeover to happen.
Sony doesn't own Spider-man, they own the movie rights to Spider-man and Spider-man original characters.

Every other bit of merchandising belongs to Disney/Marvel, this includes video games. Spider-man being exclusive to PlayStation is a license deal.

We don't know the extent of the deal Sony made with Marvel, but they probably have to get a new license for every new game.

Only in market cap,

Sony has more Long term assets 250 billion vs Disney's 160 billion

Sony has more cash on hand 19 billion vs Disney 16 billion

Sony makes more Revenue: Sony 84.6 billion VS Disney 63 billion

Sony has absolutely crushed Disney in net profits for the last 2 years.... Sony 10.7 Billion last year VS Disney 1.1 billion (last year)

This thread is an embarrassment and shows how financially illiterate people can be.

Regardless of this rumor:
You are Sony, Disney approaches and requires the Marvel characters movie rights (Spider-man, Venom, etc...). They also get the exclusive rights to use Sony IPs in movies and TV shows.

In exchange you get exclusive deal for using Disney IPs in videogames.

What would you do?

Holy shit if that happens. It would mean Disney owns Playstation. Which would make things highly interesting.
Interesting? They’d kill off the PlayStation brand in short order. If they can fuck up Star Wars, they can fuck up Playstation.

I’m not talking in terms of “strength@, but quality.

Then I stand my point, considering that The Mandalorian is a wonderful show and the latest trilogy, even if flawed, is WAY better than the prequel trilogy (but I understand this is highly subjective...)

On the economic power of the brand though, Star Wars has never been stronger.

As i said i don't see that as true multiplatform.
Multiplatform to me means being able to play the game on the platform you choose, not being forced to have a certain platform to play a game.
So does that mean that even every game that doesn't make to the Nintendo Switch isn't multiplatform then?

Last 2 years Sony blew them away.

before that Disney was making a few billion more but it's taken a while to turn Sony around from 2010...they have hit their stride now, financially.

In all metrics except market cap (which is kinda irrelevant) Sony are stronger than Disney.

Nice joke. Disney could buy back Sony's rights to make Spider-Man movies, that's all.

Disney can't buy the entire Sony because doesn't have enough money and has too much debt, and even if it could and Sony would agree the acquisition (something that I think wouldn't be easy) the Japanese government doesn't allow foreigner companies to buy top Japanese companies (including some like Nintendo or Sony). So no, Disney won't buy Sony.

Disney's recent Marvel films have sucked and the lineup for the future is a complete shitshow....

You going to Shang-Chi?

Or The Eternals? LOL
