I always thought reversing fanboy disgust over George Lucas’ unbridled greed would be the most difficult job facing Kathleen Kennedy and Bob Iger after their deal bringing LucasFilm to Disney was announced a month ago. Ah, silly me. Because it’s oh-so-apparent that the truly Herculean task ahead will be ensuring that Disney and Luscasfilm don’t further eff up the Star Wars franchise through even more unnecessary synergy. Disney doesn’t even technically own LucasFilm yet. But already ABC and Kennedy ensnared Star Wars characters into last night’s treacly Christmas-themed special episode of Extreme Makeover Home Edition. “I just saw the opening two minutes and they had Darth Vader and his Storm Troopers helping build a new house!” one eagle-eyed emailer complained to me. “This is disgusting and it’s exactly what people were afraid of with Disney buying Star Wars. They are ruining the franchise by using it for trivial bullshit. Please write about this. It’s outrageous and it’s totally wrong.” I couldn’t agree more. And since I’m ubercynical, get ready to barf when you hear the details and see this photo from the taping (contd):

More at the link. To be honest though, I don't think this is necessarily a terrible thing, and it would be for a good cause if it wasn't for the fact that most Extreme Home Makeovers end with the families owing thousands more in home taxes that they're unable to afford, but hey. :p

Not a big deal at all. We've seen Star Wars characters used in all sorts of horrible ways over the years. Like the prequels. This isn't even remotely a big deal.

Do other Disney characters show up on this show? It seems a bit weird, regardless of whether Disney owns Star Wars or not.

Can someone give me some info or links about this? It sounds pretty interesting.

Not sure, but usually the actual value on the home usually increases after the renovations. Thus higher property taxes, utilities, insurance, etc. I don't know if the homeowner has to trigger that by getting it re-appraised or if it is automatic, but it makes sense.

Here is one random story. Partially the homeowners fault for taking out another mortgage to fund a business. But if you search for other stories, you'll see other examples.

Here

yes...almost every family gets a trip to Disneyworld while the house gets built
But does Mickey Mouse show up and help build the house? Actually, if it's not just Star Wars characters showing up for the special then I really don't have a problem with this (not that I really care either way).

Actually this was the 501st Legion costuming group who was doing this. They do tons of charity events as described, and they do it out of the goodness of their heart. To join the group you have to dedicate your time every year for charity and to do things such as visit kids hospitals to cheer them up. This just happened to be an episode which involved star wars fans helping others.

Episode was also filmed long before the disney deal

There's been a Star Wars attraction at Disney World (not too sure about Disney Land never been) for years, and this episode was probably filmed before the whole purchase. So I would assume them being used here is based off the previous agreement that Disney had with Lucas arts. Granted I haven't seen the episode so no idea if they mention the purchase in it or not.

I actually watched this last night they do this kind of shit all the time. The kids and dad were huge into Star Wars and designed a themed room for them to hang out in. They do this with celebs who the families like quite often they do some shots of them helping out with the building of the house.

Like BattleMonkey said I also assumed it was the 501st

Edit: Also helps if you post the reason for all this OP

Zdroj had a bunch of Star Wars movie memorabilia that he had been collecting since he was a young boy in the 1970s, but it all was destroyed when the family’s home burned down. So the 501st Legion volunteers took pieces of their own Star Wars memorabilia and will be donating it to the Zdroj family. According to one behind-the-scenes account, “When [one] Storm Trooper was asked why he volunteers to be part of these types of events he replied, ‘It just makes me feel good.’ [Another] says the squad members are often happy their suits include masks, “because it helps hide the tears”.

Disney should feel free to exploit Star Wars all they goddamn want.

As long as they get their shit together for 7, 8, 9, I don't really give two shits about the rest of their milking.

That was us (http://www.501st.com) and it was not the first time we have appeared on Extreme Home Makeover. There is little reason to get upset about these things and it has little to do with Disney buying up Lucasfilm.

Edit: Actually I thought this was different than the event that happened a YEAR AGO, but it was not. This was an episode filmed in December 2011, long before the Disney purchase, and it is just now airing.

Good work fellas. I hope to be joining your ranks soon, once I get off my lazy butt and finish my TB

I've seen the 501st do a lot of charity over the years, they are better to the Star Wars Franchise than George Lucas has been, even when you leave the prequels out of the equation.

When I saw the pic in the OP, I thought that Disney was having all the cleaning staff at Disney World/Land dress up in stormtrooper uniforms

Is this going to be a permanent thing now?

A furniture store beside me had their Grand Opening a few months ago and Darth Vader was handing out free hot dogs - OMG THANKS LUCA$$$
