Disney am cry

Chicken Little has been destroyed by the critics. Disney am cry, Pixar for the win!

Seriously, who thinks Pixar's bargaining power with Disney just went up? :)

The Saturday matinee crowd will likely boost CL over Jarhead by a fair margin for the weekend, but I'm hoping word of mouth pushes Jarhead to longer legs. I'll try to see it next week.

I need to see if Shopgirl is playing anywhere near me.

Jarhead did better than I'd expected. And while not Pixar-worthy, the Chicken Little numbers (unfortunately) meet Disney's expectations, especially given that it'll probably have a good multiplier.

Unfortunately, I don't.

What's that cry you hear coming out of the Team Disney Burbank building? Not "The sky is falling." But -- rather -- " 'Chicken Little' 's box office projections need to be lowered."

Where just weeks ago, studio execs were confidently predicting that this Mark Dindal film would earn at least $30 million during its opening weekend ... Now, that number has been pared back by at least a third. With a $20 million opening now being seen as a more realistic target for this new animated feature. While still other folks in-house are suggesting that a number around $15 million might be a more likely opening weekend gross for this picture.
So much for that.

Speaking of which: What's the magic number? The domestic box office gross that "Chicken Little" will eventually have to earn in order to not be branded a failure? Based on what I've been hearing from company insiders, this Mark Dindal film has to earn at least as much as Dreamworks' "Shark Tale" did (which pulled in $160 million during its domestic theatrical run last year) in order for Wall Street to remain in Disney's corner.

Should "Chicken Little" NOT equal "Shark Tale" 's domestic box office total window ... The long term ramifications (I.E. Disney's stock price, the company's on-going negotiations with Pixar, Disney Feature Animation's future, etc.) could be disastrous for the corporation.
Though it will open lower than Shark Tale... but family films tend to have very good legs.

Weekend estimate: $40,086,000

That's significantly above what most people were estimating. It's also 80% of Disney's last animated film's (Home on the Range) total gross, although still less than basically all other major CGI films except for Robots.

Not sure how I feel about that. I didn't want it to tank, since that might have unwanted negative effects on the other films they've got in production, plus I'm a stockholder, but it's still a little much. I'd prefer to see these popular culture CGI films not be so well rewarded.

According to Jim Hill's site, Rapunzel Unbraided has been put on hold for major retooling, in an effort to remove all that popular culture stuff since critics were hating on it.

Hahahaha! Chicken Little is only earning slightly more than Lilo & Stitch it's opening weekend. And guess what? Lilo & Stitch was traditionally animated! That's right. It's not about making the CG switch. Instead, learn to make good movies, ya douchebags. With that said, Rapunzel looks like a serious animated feature done by a good director.

Except it's EVIL CG done by someone who has never directed before. Glen Keane is the animation god, but he has never directed a feature yet.

"Thank you overseas viewers for paying for the movie"

SAW II
Domestic: $60,468,000 93.0%
+ Overseas: $4,550,000 7.0%
= Worldwide: $65,018,000
Production Budget: $4 million

Theres 3 sure things in the world, death, taxes, and Saw III.

I've got to see Saw II. :)

And I expect a considerable drop for Jarhead in the coming week, considering the split word-of-mouth.

The article you quoted basically just said the same thing I did. A failure by Chicken Little would have disasterous long term ramifications, and specifially mentions that those negotiations with Pixar would be something effected.

Family movies do indeed have good legs, but the competiion spikes up as well. Next week brings Zathura, which is getting solid buzz, and the following week brings the new Harry Potter film. Zathura will erode Chicken Little's box office, and Harry Potter will destroy it. Still, $40 million is pretty solid and Disney should be happy with the start it has gotten off to.

Seriously, though... on one hand, I'm looking forward to some of Disney's upcoming CG efforts, and I wouldn't want them to be adversely affected... but on the other hand, I really, really, want Pixar to get more leverage, and it looks like they may not.

Wow, that's big jump from what was suspected of a $10 million opening day!! Guess we spoke all too soon. $40 million?! Sunday actually made more than Friday? That hardly ever happens for movie releases!

Actually, it's fairly common in the family film genre considering that most families don't take the kids out on Friday night, and generally wait for Saturday and Sunday to go see this type of film. In contrast, films like Jarhead, which skew to an older crowd, tend to get out of the gates on Friday a lot better.

Do I? Sorry. I'm just always so torn between profits and quality films.

Go for quality films and put off profits for the immediate future. Aim for the returns on merchandising quality films generate...

Bring back the good Disney musicals... that's an entire branch of mindshare and merchandising Disney dumped when they tried to imitate the shallow films of today.
