We’ve been hearing rumblings of a Tron television series for the last month or so (first, second), and now Disney has confirmed the reports during their upfront presentation Tuesday evening. The mouse house has also revealed a new animated series for Marvel’s The Avengers.

The Tron animated series would be broadcast on the Disney Channel and geared towards kids aged 6-14. The bad news is that the pilot has yet to be greenlit, and the earliest we can expect it is late 2011/early 2012. Before they broadcast full episodes, Disney plans to release a a 10-part “Tron” micro-series premiering in fall 2011 on Disney XD. According to reports, Disney showed some stills from the early development of the series, but nothing has been released online publicly.

The other piece of news coming out of the upfront is that Disney is already begining to take advantage of their acquisition of Marvel Entertainment, and will be releasing an animated series on Disney XD in fall 2010: “The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes“.

Disney Channels Worldwide entertainment president and chief creative officer Gary Marsh is also quoted as saying that Disney has “been pouring through the library of 7,000 Marvel characters looking for the next Spider-Man,” adding that “fans of the Marvel Universe should expect to see more cooperative ventures in the near future.”

What the hell is "Disney XD". Why can't they just say "Tron and The Avengers will be coming to Disney Channel".
It's their channel targeted at male tweens. It's separate from the Disney Channel. It used to be Toon Disney/Jetix, I believe.

Don't know if you're being sarcastic, but Disney Channel and Disney XD (previously Toon Disney) are two different channels. XD has the teen-oriented action shows. (Edit: Beaten)

And, yeah, there was an avengers cartoon in the 90's. Only a few seasons, I think.

I was wondering why there was no Avengers animated series before. Excite!

For some reason the big three were only used for cameos. So you had Ant-man leading them. :\

There was an Avengers cartoon before....a good many years back but I'm pretty sure it happened. I might even have it on dvd somewhere....
I sure there was one many a years ago. I just meant in the last twenty years or so.

Also, I just realized Disney will, more than likely, be animating this. Double excite!

EDIT: OH YEA! Now I remember that. I guess I choose to block it out. Ha ha.

I may be showing my age, but Tron is getting an animated series? It's about damn time. It's only been, what, twenty-five years? And it hasn't aged a bit...

If thats the Avengers series I was reading about that has actually been shot and done, like the whole first season but has been kept quiet for awhile now. Wondering if this was the reason why.

I know I'm not the only one who cannot unsee the "XD" in "Disney XD" as a laughing emoticon. It's like the FedEx arrow -- I just can't freaking unsee it.

...

But, I am interested. Hopefully it is watchable; Lord knows I haven't been watching as many cartoons as I used to but I can blame that on both growing up and the lack of good cartoons on television these days. It's all not like it used to be...
