Disney threatened to pull Force Awakens from all Arclight theaters...

...to get extended play at LA's Cinemarama Dome throughout the holidays, allegedly , forcing Arclight to break a contract they had to show Hateful Eight.
(Sorry for the poor title, not enough characters to cover it properly)

This is according to Quentin Tarantino on the Howard Stern show on SiriusXM this morning.

Writeup of the interview here:
Quentin Tarantino went on the Howard Stern SiriusXM radio show and spoke about how Disney is strong-arming Arclight Cinemas to push the director’s 70MM presentation of his eighth film The Hateful Eight aside in favor of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in LA’s famed Cinemarama Dome. The director first learned about this on Monday. The western was originally due to play there, claims Tarantino, starting on Dec. 25th, but now Force Awakens is getting an extended play through the holidays.

“It was real bad news and it fucking pissed me off,” Tarantino told Stern. “They are going out of their way to fuck me.”

All per Tarantino: when ArcLight Cinemas told Disney they were honoring their contract for Hateful Eight, Disney threatened to pull Force Awakens from all ArcLight locations.
Living here in L.A., The Cinerama Dome is a prized venue for Tarantino. In fact that the Cinerama logo appears in the opening credits of The Hateful Eight.
The premiere for the film was held on Monday, Dec. 7 at the Cinerama Dome and the director told Deadline’s Pete Hammond, “I made The Hateful Eight for the Dome…This is the first time seeing it at the Dome for me too, and it was like I hadn’t even seen it before, not like this.”

“It’s vindictive, it’s mean, and it’s extortion,” Tarantino added. The Oscar-winning fimmaker further added that his beef isn’t with Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams, but with the top suits at Disney. In fact, Abrams worked with Tarantino when the director starred as McKenas Cole on Abrams’ ABC show Alias. “I made a lot of money for the Disney corporation,” Tarantino told Stern referring to the days when Disney owned Miramax and released such titles as Pulp Fiction ($213.9M worldwide) and the Kill Bill two pic saga (combined $333M worldwide) as well as Jackie Brown ($40M domestic).

Pretty shitty practice, if true. Not like Star Wars needs the extra attention

Why would anyone want to release a movie, the week a Star Wars movie is coming though. Not to mention a long awaited movie.

Pretty shitty thing to do. I'm supposed to see Hateful 8 in the Dome that Sunday. It's still listed on Arclight's site and I haven't received an email.

Disney already has every screen in the Hollywood area, including the only IMAX. What more do they need?

It's coming out the week after, as are a shitload of other movies.

I don't know the Cinemarama, but I'm guessing it's a 70mm theater too, which really sticks in his craw

To be fair this whole 70mm thing didn't seem planned out too well. They waited till just this week to put out a list of theaters, for instance.

Star Wars comes out in two days.

The Hateful Eight comes out on Christmas. They aren't the same week.

Also, Tarantino movies are way better than Star Wars, anyway.

Are you kidding me? There probably isn't a whole lot of overlap with Quentin's film and he has had success with Christmas Day releases before. It doesn't matter what is releasing the week before. This is just plain shitty.

The 70mm version is the only one coming out on the 25th, the wide release is January 1st, so yeah I'd imagine that's pretty frustrating.

It's rough because Star Wars has a 70mm component too. And there are next to no 70mm theaters around. Just real bad luck that the only two legitimate 70mm features to come out in the last several years are hitting at the same time, and therefore fighting for screens.

Ah. Still, I would release a movie months after a Star Wars movie debut. But thats just me.

it's called counter programming not everyone will want to see Star Wars or some will see it enough and want to watch something else. Lots of more adult orientated movies coming in the weeks ahead The Revenant and Hateful 8 among them, best time to release them really.

not everyone is interested in star wars? i'd rather go see hateful eight
Disney needs all the help it can get to break the box office record. Come Sunday, if this doesn't hit $200 million, how are you going to feel? If we can't come together as a nation to make this happen, then something is seriously wrong with this country.

Ooooh yeah that's even worse. That's basically just a fuck you to Tarantino just because

Star Wars has 70mm shit in it? Oooooh

Yes, let me disqualify my film's chances at an oscar this year so that I don't have to worry about Disney pulling a vindictively anticompetitive move that strong-arms theaters into breaking my contracts with them.

The Weinstein Company need to admit defeat, push the release back to late January and give up on the 70mm 'roadshow' idea which is already a disaster.

I'd be devastated. My life and ability to troll Jurassic World success simply depends on it breaking records. AoU failed us so Star Wars is the last throw of the dice before the years end.

How else am I to get some non earned reflected glory and feel better about myself? if this movie doesn't break records? Tell me that.

I had no idea you were allowed to break a contract just like that. "Sorry bros, but Disney are making some demands of us, so we're just going to break our contract with you."

Oh it's fine if there was a contract, Disney doesn't have to give them anything and they can keep honoring their contract. *Shrug* Business is business, and Disney wants their starchild to be the biggest thing ever with the most exposure. Can't blame them for strong arming a theater chain.

Yes you most certainly can blame them for strong arming a theater chain. Just because unethical stuff happens a lot does not make it ok.

Opinions, how, work, they
Ah the Disney shills come out of the woodwork.

I'm actually surprised that they're showing Star Wars at the dome. When The Avengers came out Disney held it back from the Arclight because they were showing it down the street at the El Capitan, which is a Disney-owned theater.

I wouldn't release a movie within a month length of Star Wars. Just a terrible idea. Doesn't make Disney's actions any better of course, but it's certainly not surprising.

Tarantino being one of my favorites, and I really feel bad. And this is a shit move. The fact that it's Star Wars makes it hard to be mad... I really should be more mad.
