Disney threatened to pull Force Awakens from all Arclight theaters...

The Weinstein Company need to admit defeat, push the release back to late January and give up on the 70mm 'roadshow' idea which is already a disaster.

They already pushed the general release date up to Jan 1 because of how much demand they've been seeing for the film.

And why should they give up the roadshow idea on the grounds of shenanigans at just one of the theaters that's running it?

Stupid to be releasing a major film at the same time as Star Wars.

Do we really have enough information here to make any judgement as to what is really happening with this? All we have is one person saying that a contract was broken, but people are throwing blame around. Maybe there was a buy out clause in the contract, because breaking contract is grounds for legal action. Tarantino couldvget the courts to compel the theater to show his film, but that's not being suggested ... So, I'm guessing the contract had some form of out that the theater excercised. But, I don't know either ... We need more info.

because the biggest screens that benefit from 70mm are booked up for Star Wars and very few people know how to project 70mm film without scratching it to hell

Oh it's fine if there was a contract, Disney doesn't have to give them anything and they can keep honoring their contract. *Shrug* Business is business, and Disney wants their starchild to be the biggest thing ever with the most exposure. Can't blame them for strong arming a theater chain.

"Can't blame them" is the best argument for doing something unethical, we should use this argument more often in other threads.

How can they be booked up on just Star Wars when we already have a final list of theaters showing The Hateful Eight in 70mm? AFAIK, the list of showings for Star Wars in 70mm is a mere fraction of what Tarantino was able to get for his film.

Well big screens can have more than just 70mm projected onto them, you can get a 35mm or digital movie showing on there

The number of theatres showing it in 70mm was far lower than had been previously announced and expected and they won't necessarily be projecting it on their largest screens

The Hateful 8 needs to be excellent to make a lot of money at the Box Office.

Star Wars just needs to show up. If I owned a theater, I'd want to show Star Wars over everything else too.

This is fucked. How the hell are people not more pissed that Disney are being such dicks? Is it really just because "Star Wars?" Fuck that. Shity is shity no matter who does it.

They aren't releasing the same week. Should movie theaters only show 1 film at a time for months on end?

I didn't know that but still. Movies theatres are going to packed with Star Wars for weeks.

Surely I can't be the only one that would like to see hateful eight over the 7th star wars film.

I don't think there are too many folks who feel like that outside GAF.

Disney needs all the help it can get to break the box office record. Come Sunday, if this doesn't hit $200 million, how are you going to feel? If we can't come together as a nation to make this happen, then something is seriously wrong with this country.

Hateful Eight doesn't open until Christmas. Opening Weekend is already over at that point, obviously.

Because Quentin Tarantino should have known better than to go against the most powerful movie franchise ever. QT is the victim, and this sucks, but he should have known that this was a possibility when he decided to premiere his movie on that date.

what does he expect? His movies are targeted to a niche audience, they dont have wide audience appeal. Of course the theatre is going to go for star wars.

He's actually a rather bankable director. Django Unchained did over $425 million WW, which is insane for an ultra-violent western with a black lead that crept up to being 3 hours long.

Awhile ago Star Wars already locked up every IMAX screen for a month straight, and it so happens that many of the theaters already equipped to project 70mm are the real IMAX film screens dotted across the country, so that already took a chunk of potential 70mm venues away from Hateful 8 from the get go.

Weird moral standards being invented here. Nobody is "shady."
Well, they're just leveraging their power to force a theater chain out of a contract so they can make as much money as possible. It's not really "shady" in that they aren't exactly hiding it but it is still a dick move.

Well to be fair FA is going to be bigger than the hateful eight.

Sorry tarantino.

Yeah but 70mm is a special thing. Not many theaters are equipped/trained to show that, so it's shitty they are pushing it aside for a movie that's gonna be shown everywhere for months anyway.

Disney has become astronomically huge in assets and wealth, that they have become filled with greed. Scary. To some people in here, quit being a corporate apologist because they own an IP you adore. I say that as someone who doesn't particularly care about Tarantino movies, and is a big Star Wars fan.

Releasing just a week after Star Wars was a risky move and unfortunately it bit him in the ass.

One way to mitigate risk is to secure distribution contracts, which is what Tarantino did.

Then Disney said 'fuck you, give us all your theaters or you get zero star wars money' and Arclight folded.

Why do people keep trying to pin this on Tarantino, as if he's to blame for what's happening to him?
