Reached the boss at the church and figured I should be able to handle it since he's the same lvl as me, but the first thing he does is one-shot three of my party members with some kind of ridiculous meteor storm spell. What the heck am I supposed to do here? Just try to stack fire resistance? Or go someplace else and come back later?

Got any bow/crossbow users and some knockdown arrows? Almost always got to knockdown all mages as it's easier in my experience tha n trying to stun them

Send 3 of your party members down the stairs to the right and then put some fire resist on your 4th and send them to the middle of the room to trigger the fight and tank the attack themselves. I don't know if there's a better way to do it, though I'm sure there should be since it requires you to know what's going to happen in advance.

Well, for one, unchain your party and spread them out to make them less juicy targets for the AoE bombardment spell. He also uses it only once and is generally very fire-happy, so stacking fire resistance is definitely a good thing to do.
All in all, that fight is kind of a 'lets see what you have learned about the combat and geo-effects system' test overall. It can be devastatingly difficult if you just bum-rush it, but definitely manageable if you use all the tools available.
You know... I find that the combat in this game is so easy to completely disable so many enemies at once, even when you're a couple levels below... I don't think I agree that you get punished too much unless you're really getting ahead of yourself in an obvious way.
Especially if you use crafting. You can have so many consumables that spam disabling spells and enough summons to keep your party mostly untouched very quickly. So all four party members can participate in building disabling combos every single turn.
Not all parties are created equal. The level difference is highly important early on unless you got some summoning to help out your lack of attributes/ability options
There's also a hilariously OP bottleneck to use so you don't have to deal with all the minibosses that spawn around the boss at once. I sent a rogue in with fire res, had him kite to the party waiting outside the narrow entrance, and continuously maintained evolving AOE depending on which enemy was attempting to push through.
Yeah, that doorway opens up all sorts of possibilities. I teleported the main dude through the door and sealed the doorway with Ice Wall. Before that, I divided the main area with a smoke screen spell to neutralize all the ranged abilities the enemies had for the first turn. They happily obliged my melee heavy team and walked right though the smoke to the waiting 2-H swordin' duo. It's a more scrappy tactic than the bottlenecking one, but eliminates the hassle of having to dance around the boss to get the Void Crystals that spawn on Tactician. I don't think they spawn on the normal difficulty?
Tip for that fight - the fire miniboss spawns a pool of lava when you kill him where his corpse is. Teleport the two remaining minibosses onto it for an insta-kill.

Thanks for the tips. I went to Luculla Forest in the meantime and reached level 10 before attempting the fight again. I ended up unchaining my glass cannon mage and sending him to take the AoE while the rest of my party went down the stairs to the right where the poison boss spawns. My mage predictably died from the AoE, but the rest of my party were able to take down the poison boss before the other two reached them. Things got a bit hairy but eventually I managed to take them down too. For some reason the big guy just stood in the middle of the room doing nothing while I dealt with his lackeys; seemed like was bugged or something, which certainly made the fight easier. Anyway, after dealing with the rest of the adds I rezzed my mage and healed up a bit, at which point the big guy finally decided to come at me. He turned out to be a bit of a pushover on his own, however.
So yeah, turns out the hardest part of the fight was the initial AoE, which is kinda stupid since the odds of surviving it are pretty damn slim if you're going in blind.
Well that's fairly standard for a lot of the harder fights, the initial turn/pre turn is the harder stuff. You just quick reload and do it again. The fight preparation to not die isn't really super hard either, you just put avatar of fire on some guy, make it rain, unlock the guy and send him to initiate dialogue, he(or she) takes minimal damage and then you can play the fight normally.
Game's a lot about reloading unless you know the game. Like every area with traps, you'll probably have a bunch of people dying. And there's a lot of areas with traps.
It's also a good introduction to the value of elemental resists. You will want to get your resists up a decent bit so you don't have people randomly dying to big spells. Keep those rings with elemental resists for specific situations like this, especially for melees. Eventually you get more and more resists so you don't need to swap.
They removed a TON of similar skills, which would be fine if it didn't make companion composition much less flexible. I also dislike that many high level skills are single use now
So far Tactician mode is not as challenging as I'd hoped. Basically get a value ability point in different tree to bypass immunities. I'm facerolling enemies as I'm leaving cyseal. Perma- disable enemies and finish them off one by one or turn them against each other. Or cheese your way to victory with invisibility and/or teleportation pyramids.
Bone Baron and his court got blasted by my gang, but the fire twin boss and the church boss are still a bit much. I'm thinking of heading into Lucella forest for a bit.
Other than making minor healing potions, I have no handle on the crafting system, so my gear ranges from shit tier to ok. I am rolling with Madora and Baidotr. My second is a mage, and I'm a rogue.
is driving me nuts. I imagine my best bet against him is to do some setup before the fight, maybe make a rain puddle and try to get him stunned before the get-go, but it's crazy tough. So many enemies, so many attacks that knock me over or curse me or charm me or stun me. And they're all strong. And if I do kill the enemies he just makes more. geeeeeeeeez.
I just spread my party around him, didn't bother talking to him and then hit him with my most powerful spell. Once it kicked off you need to hit roughly where he might be with an AOE spell and then go after him with full party. Once done mop up and deal with the conversation within the party about attacking random strangers

the guy sunbathing near the cave? I also skipped the dialogue and attacked him outright. I also cast rain which pretty much made his sand henchmen killable in 1-2 shots.
Rain is your friend. Freeze, stun or rapture fire boss
.
Church:
Sneak in with one character. Use teleportation pyramid to relocate out of the door. Let mini-bosses come to you, finish them off one by one. Finish boss last
Quite hard until you learn ability combos, balance team composition and abuse the environment. Not particularly hard after that. The non-enhanced edition got progressively easier towards the end, I haven't played through the enhanced one yet
Is there a way to disable the auto-rotating camera as you move your view cone towards the edge of a map?

So about the murder investigation Cyseal quest, I seem to have stalled out and I'm wondering if I have screwed myself over. My attempts at investigating by digging through people's stuff inevitably spiral into a bloodbath...
When I was investigating
the mortician's house
, I was digging through some stuff not knowing he was right there, and killed him when he went hostile. Then, when I ran into
Murphy the dog
, I triggered a fight with
an undead dude named Dave who was a few levels higher than me.
He proceeded to
kill Murphy
.
Anyway, I busted into
Evelyn's
house and got some info about a hideout. However the people guarding that spot are too tough for me. And even though it seems like I should be able to confront
Evelyn
about matters, there are no new dialogue options available from that character. They are just milling around
the clinic, and making comments about the stone reacting to me
as usual.
Any suggestions on what to try? I have been exploring around and stuff, went east and beat up
an undead king and his court
, but I'm not sure if there is further investigative insights to be found in the town or if I just have to start getting ready to fight that wizard guy.
about Evelynn to trigger her "time to skip town" phase and continue the quest
. You probably want to clear the undead to the west of town up to the lighthouse, and to the north too, so you have the right level. Normal progression kinda goes like this,
western area to lighthouse, northern area to cave, through the cave, isolated beach, black cove, eastern cyseal.

That cave is black cove, so it's a bit later, if you follow the intended progression. Although I guess northern cyseal and further is about the same as black cove, so you can pick whichever you prefer doing.

I think to get that character to acknowledge your investigation, you have to first deal with matters concerning
Esmerelda as the prime suspect. Search around for three pieces of evidence which suggest her guilt. After you confront her about all three she will lose her temper with you and mention something interesting about Evelyn. At which point you should find that Evelyn plays out differently. (However, you kinda sequence-broke this whole thing anyway by busting down Evelyn's door and ransacking her house.
After playing Fallout 4, I definitely think Divinity is the better game. Fallout 4 is one of the best games this year but divinity is on another level.
Yeah. Plus, you have to engage in dialogue with him with her chained to whoever initiates (or just use her to initiate). And if you want a favorable outcome, you better have used her and talked to her.

Thanks for the suggestion. I do have the three things. I don't remember if I asked about all of them. I may not have because it wasn't leading anywhere and I actually didn't think that person was the culprit, so I will try to offend them to the max tonight with specious insinuations.
I'm kind of wondering now what will happen if I just
saunter into the clinic, close the door to that room, and start nuking Evelyn inquisitor-style. I blitzed the door of her house because it seemed like she was pretty questionable. The material to be found in there made her seem even moreso.
I'm not sure how tolerant the game is of my sequence-breaking blunders though, so I'll try to set off the progress flag; it's only sporting to give enough warning so they can repair to the evil lab, etc.

and got access to the demon guy on the End of Time that can respec your protags. I've been hoarding spell books the whole game but Larian made all the low level spells easy to buy in the EE lol.
sooo i wanted to get something from the scoundrel npc but didn't want to spend money and already pick pocketed her so i killed her for it. If i remember this correctly doesn't she
give the quest for killing the orc in the mayors library?

Someone else. He does ask you to meet in the room next to the scoundrel NPC's room though, which is probably why you remember a link between the two, but there's none.
This game doesn't autosave very often. I'm trying to remember to quick save a lot, but modern games have kind of trained me to think that whenever you encounter a loading screen between areas or whatever, your game will save. This doesn't seem to be the case here.
I've lost prob 5 hours over the course of my game so far. It's my own fault.
Wow, I just stumbled upon a really fucked up puzzle
The cardinal directions in the library room with the buttons puzzle are wrong . "North" on the minimap is not the north of that room. Took me forever to find those buttons and then they suddenly change that, too? That's crazy. http://abload.de/img/2015-11-20_00004mgksi.jpg
Look at the minimap and the compass on the floor. Took me forever because of that BS.
I had to send in one person with high fire resistance and HP to aggro him and take that first meteor punch, then after the fight started I sent in the rest of my party. First two times that shit wrecked almost my entire party on the first hit. As I started the game on tactician I then had to figure out that I needed to kill his protection stones. Thankfully I auto saved after the first meteor strike and then again after the poison mob went down. It took me a round or two of hitting him with no damage being taken before I noticed the stones lol

Don't know if this is related to your question (maybe this doesn't apply in dungeons/enclosed spaces), but I'm playing on PS4 and minimap was working unexpectedly for me too. I started the game with a rotating minimap, which I then switched to fixed in settings. I assumed that this locked the minimap in the usual "north is up" orientation. It seems to be marked that way. The thing is, it didn't.
Disabling minimap rotation locks it in whatever orientation it's in at that moment. To fix it I had to turn minimap rotation on again, adjust positioning so that North matched North on the full map screen, and then disable minimap rotation again.

Finished the game. Fantastic overall. Went with two Inquisitors which were super strong at first but felt a little weak by the end compared with Glass Cannon Bairdotr XD.
Only problem I had was one quest bugged so I didn't get the trophy for it but I need a second run for a couple of others anyway so hopefully second time lucky?
I played five or six hours of this game when it came out but couldn't really get into it. I was playing The Witcher 3 when the EE dropped, so I couldn't get to this game until right now. Biggest and most pleasant surprise is that this game is now running at 60fps locked on PC. The old ver I would frequently have in the 40s. It just runs so much better. The other thing that annoyed me to no end was the camera, now it rotates freely 360° and as a result the game feels a lot freer to me.
Hopefully the rebalancing and retuning does the job because I did start feeling lost when I first played.
Hey all! Is there any recommended build or classes for newer players? I'm hoping to play the game on either Classic or Explorer difficulty, but staring at the character creation screen, as usual is rather daunting. Any mistakes to avoid when making your heroes?
