Do we expect Splatoon to be the next major Nintendo I.P.?

In light of Hyrule Warriors getting a portable port, do you think we'll see a 3DS version/port of this game?

It's taking off faster than anyone could have ever predicted, a scaled-down port would make sense.

I seriously doubt Splatoon could work quite right given all the fancy "goopy ink" shaders and probably detailed physics calculations the Wii U needs to handle for accurate play.

Not really. Just turn off some shaders and tone down lighting stuff like ambient occlusion and the physics load isn't really too bad to do liquid particle emitters. They won't look like the Wii U but neither does any 3ds port.

It's incredible how anyone could think Splatoon would sales as bad as Wonderful 101.
Even before release it was clear Splatoon had a good sale potential.

The sales numbers confirm that Splatoon has now reached "major Nintendo I.P." status! Nice job Nintendo!
I would at least wait for the end of the fiscal year to say anything.

I don't think anyone actually believed that. Maybe those were trolls.

Well, in Japan at least, it's a major IP...it doesn't say much but it's technically right.

I'm expecting a more single-player centered Splatoon for Nintendo's next handheld near launch.

Maybe also a spinoff rhythm game starring Callie & Marie.

Is anyone buying the game? 0 buzz amongst my friends for this game. Several people I know who play games haven't even heard of it

Yes I know anecdotal etc but there's no numbers until NPD so it's all I have to go on

Nope, nobody in the two official threads here on GAF bought the game.

I've heard of plenty of people who bought the game, most of them from people who I never thought owned a Wii U up until this point. :)

Hah yeah I was exaggerating a bit, I know people are buying it, but it just seems to have flown under the radar so to speak, hard to imagine something becoming a major IP if it doesn't move units.

But I suppose every series started somewhere, the game looks ace so hopefully it finds success

We all know GAF is not representative of the mainstream gaming audience.

It's premature to say that's it's going to have the legs of other Nintendo games, but it's far to say it's done better at launch than anyone could have expected a new shooter IP on Wii U to do.

I got a Wii U for this game then bought Hyrule Warriors and Bayonetta in case I got bored.

Mostly I've only played Warriors during the hours where my internet shut out for no good reason, and I've barely started Bayo lol.

Splatoon reminds me a lot of Animal Crossing in how session seem to go (multiple shorter sessions throughout the day as opposed to one big binge) thanks to the map rotation and time based events (orders, shops restocking). In that sense, it can lend itself well to a portable, I just don't think the 3DS could handle the online multiplayer.

Nintendo's Pro Bono PR Firm
If that is the case then I am extremely impressed given that...
  • It is a Wii-U game
  • It is a new IP
  • It came out with three days left in the month.
This is good news indeed. Knowing its buzz is excellent, next month sales could remain high.

Splatoon is in the top 5 for NPD apparently

4 realz? daaaaaaaamn. Way to go Ninty. All things considered (single SKU, a few days worth of sales, 'failed console') that's quite impressive. But I can understand it due to the combo of an extremely high quality core game and a smart marketing mix of targeted out-of-home takeovers, event branding, well positioned tv spots, and their first ever online beta of sorts

It's really nice to see that this lovely little game is doing so well considering the circumstances.
At this point, I"m confidently expecting Spla2oon to show up on one of the 9th gen Nintendo machines.
And honestly I can't wait considering the tremendous leap in both quality and scope from the likes of things like Pikmin 1 to Pikmin 2 and Wii Sports to Wii Sports Resort.

And Smash 64 to Melee!

Splatoon 2 is a no brainer for the next console, but Splatoon is going to have a long DLC plan like Mario Kart and Smash Bros.

I know that the content is rolling out because everything wasn't ready at launch but I like what Nintendo is doing with rolling out DLC for Splatoon every week or so. It adds to the longevity for a lot of gamers. I wish most of the featurese (like friends in ranked matches) were available at launch but getting a free map every two weeks is nice.

That's what I figured. Nintendo seems to have realized that the fastest way to get more content out for the system is to simply add more to pre-existing games as opposed to trying to make millions of new ones.

Fine by me.

I'm hoping we get one big Splatoon title for each platform from here on out.

Maybe about as well as wonderful 101

I am expecting slightly better sales than wonderful 101. So no, not a major new IP.

It'll bomb.

Make it free and Splatoon 2 might have a chance.
