Do you have confidence that next generation's consoles will last? (durability)

In other words, do you expect consoles which need to be replaced? I don't expect my Xbox to last much longer than a year, if that. And I know that some people sell PS2's on eBay because of their infamous problems in reading disks. Nintendo's consoles are generally long-lasting, but the company isn't much of a factor next generation. I certainly hope that console replacements are lessened from this generation, since prices are bound to be high enough. And of course launch window systems can be the worst in terms of problems.

But I'm an optimist. I hope that Sony and MS have machines that can be bought by most people on launch day and still work just fine 5 years later.

Seems like any console with a disk drive of any kind craps out in a relatively short time, since the Famicom disk system. Too bad. I guess it's all the moving parts. And now consoles have DVD drives and HDDs.

PS3 will most likely be made of shoddy parts.
Xbox2 will be made with decent parts.
Evolution will be made pretty well.

Of course first gen systems will have problems. The first models of PS3s will have serious problems.

In order of durability:

1) Revolution
2) XBox 360
3) PS3

But since all the consoles I've ever bought are still working like a charm right now (I don't even have to blow on the NES carts/system, just pop n play) I think they'll be fine. I will be cautious of Sony though, I've had a good run, but lots of ppl I know are on their 2nd/3rd PS2 and went through like 4/5 PS1's.

I agree

PSX bought in Summer 1998: Still works
PS2 bought in December 2001: Still works
Radeon 9800 Pro Bought Feb 2004: Still works :P

No console has every broken down on me. I guess I am lucky ;)

So many Xbox's wouldn't be so unreliable if MS didn't use those damn thompson drives. Hopefully Xbox 2 will use a durable drives from only 1 manufacturer this time. PS3 will most likely not change sony's rep on unreliable game systems (especially considering first gen blu-ray drives will probably not be as reliable as current dvd drives).

I'm not too worried about Nintendo's next console. I had no problems with the Xbox this generation, so from personal experince I'm not expecting a disaster from MS either. Sony is the big question mark for me, however.

Considering my Xbox went disc-error crazy without havin been used as much as my PS2, I'd put Xbox 360 3rd, and PS3 2nd in order of durability. Revolution is gonna be undestructible.

I hope Nintendo will continue to make durability a priority.

My Xbox seems more fragile than my PS2 for some reason, but I've played it probably twice as much. I have semi-worries about both machines though I treat them well.

Anectdotal evidence is fun: my Turbografx-CD from 1990 still works perfectly, and it's gotten more use from me than the current gen of consoles combined. Playstation from 96 also works fine, along with my Xbox, PS2, and current Gamecube. Only consoles I've had fail were my first Saturn (bought in 97, disc drive died in 2002), first Dreamcast (drive died after a month) and my first Gamecube (drive failed after one week). The GC failure surprised me since all my previous Nintendo consoles had been bulletproof. I've never experienced the problems others have had with Sony consoles, but then again I've always waited for a few hardware revisions before buying one.
