Do you think Halo 5 will live up to expectations?

I'm not a fan of the series so I'm kind of on the outside looking in, it seems to me that there isn't anywhere near as much hype & expectation for this Halo as there was previously. Maybe it will be easier for this one to surprise people.

Did halo 4? Did MCC? If the answer to both of those questions is no then you're a fool if you preordered this game.

This is one of those "fool you once shame on them, fool you twice shame on you. Fool you three times, what the fuck is wrong with you?", type of scenarios tbqh

I'm still being neutral, so I have average expectations. I'll be pleasanty surprised if it's better than my expectations, but not really disappointed if it doesn't.

Halo 4 was pretty good even if most peaple hate it cause is not Bungie's anymore, i think 343 are a great team, and they'll definitely improve what they've done in Halo 4, can't wait for this game

That's definitely not the reason why people "hate" Halo 4 and this has been discussed to death several times already.

I put hate in quotation marks, because that's also not true. The general audience doesn't hate Halo 4. If anything they just don't like it as much as other Halo games.

You also can't say that based on a forum. We are the 0.1% (probably even much lower).

Halo campaigns always come up against some heavy scrutiny. "Something permanent happened to someone sort of important? Nooooooo!!! A cliffhanger? Noooooo!!! They didn't tell a self-contained story? Nooooooo!!!" It will take time for people to settle down and let it sink in. I feel like it's almost impossible for some games to have a really awesome story because the developers have to think about the fans reactions so much, even more so than the film industry in a lot of ways. It's dumb.

Multiplayer, on the other hand, will be fun and addictive as hell. I think there's something for everyone, and we already know how good the actual gameplay feels. The flow of free content is also huge.

Dont like it as much is a qualifier for understatement of the year if halo 4 vs other halo games online playerbases is anything to compare.

We played this one man I know how to spot a trashy game and this isn't it.

i think its useless to try and make a determination until well after launch.

343 is positioning this game to have staying power. thats what they want. thats what the free map packs are for. so much of this game seems like its built around the game being supported for a long time.

I think its a different model than previous halos. sure, all of them had map packs and post launch stuff, but things like seasonal ranks, additional req stuff added, and forge make me think this game cant really be judged until we not only see what 343 did with the initial product, but what they do after.

they want this to be DOTA or CSGO. to stick around.

How do you come to that conclusion? By what metric? Or is this a sneaky concern troll to deflate some of the hype?

There are like 3 halo threads on the front page here at all times one being literally named "Halo 5 - Its been a long time since I've been this hyped for a game" where people are basically just talking about how much they are looking forward to this game, the halo 5 launch trailer has been out for like 10 days and has already far surpassed 3mio views on youtube with more than 96% upvotes.

The hype for h5 is real and huge...

This is an opinion of course from someone looking from the inside ;) The hype is far bigger imo than with h4 or Reach

Splitscreen not being in the game is a disappointment either way, and the penalty will be harsh I bet, probably -5 from the reviews in aggregate.

I would reverse it and give it +5 for the buttery smooth 60 FPS we get which would have been lost if they went split screen.

I'm still on the fence about Halo 5. After Reach i said i'd never buy another Halo game but i bought 4 and said i'd never buy another Halo game. I think Halo 5 will be better received than 4 and will last longer than 4. Mainly because i think Blop3 will disappoint and there's nothing else in terms of shooters coming out until holiday next year.

But i'm skeptical of Halo 5's lasting power. COD already took over the throne after H3's glory finally died. There's no question who is the leading FPS franchise in the industry.
It's going to be interesting to see if it can beat out BLOP3. Sometimes i think it can other times i think not. I'm on the fence.

Tbh this is the first Halo game that i'm not hyped for at all.

I wasn't hyped for 4 and i got it anyway, just to sell it back in 2 weeks. I'm still debating if i'll even buy this one.

The lower expectations can be a good thing though, it can overachieve and surprise a lot of skeptics.

On the other hand I'm not really a series fan any more, and I'm surprised how much hype there is, considering the lukewarm response to Halo 4 and the complete fuck-up of MCC.

Sales wise certainly - I wouldn't be surprised if it easily tops 10m in sales. Will do well critically too, but no it won't live up to the hype - nothing ever does.

So you expect the game to have what, better than 80-90% attach rate? How many consoles has XB1 sold LTD? NO way Halo 5 is moving 10 million units.

I'm expecting 1.5 million copies sold day one absolute max, probably less. That's just the optimisitc scenario. Launch month is october so only 4 days of sales, unless you track Oct 27-Nov 27. Even then sales for the first 30 days probably won't pass 3.5 millin copies (assuking there are at least 12 million XB1 consoles sold to date... I have no idea and am guessing at allof this).

But guessing aside, 10 million isnt happening.

It wont top 10million but every Halo game has hit 6 million and above hasn't it? it will do fine financially.

I'm worried about population once COD and Battlefront releases.

It'll do fine sales and critics whise.

Why do people "worry" about population? Seems like the most concern troll thing ever. You can boot up Titanfall on XB1 right now and get in a game in seconds full teams. Do people think that COD and Battlefront are going to come out and the millions that bought this game are going to abandon it?....and please don't waste time posting that stupid Halo 4 population drop off graph. Even with that stupid graph you can still get into a Halo 4 match in seconds.

If dedis and matchmaking work well, population should not be an issue. As long as there is one available game in each playlist in your area, you should ideally have a smooth experience.

I was just referring to launch + 30 days. I think I saw someone say earlier the XB1 has sold 20 million units (or at least shipped). If the install base is 20M+ I could see Halo 5 selling 6million+ lifetime sales, but not within the launch window, unless it somehow manages a 30% or higher attach rate within that first month (assuming the 20M xb1 number is accurate).

Weird that for the Halos on Xbox 360, Microsoft would be very public about their pre-order tracking. They'd never hesitate to talk about how many pre-orders were made and how it was going to be the biggest launch in Xbox history. I'm not seeing any of that this go-round, and it's a week away from launch.

Sneaky concern troll? Wtf has you so defensive? Believe it or not I don't judge hype based on Neogaf threads or Youtube views, mostly because perceptions can't really be quantified in these ways.

I probably should have asked if I'm allowed have an opinion first before posting.

im looking forward to h5 but im honestly surprised at how much hype its actually received, i thought itd be lower.

What are you judging the hype on?

It really depends on which expectations you have. I'm more of a singleplayer guy, so that's my main focus.

I'm pretty hyped, but I'm already setting up for disappointment. Mostly because you apparently only play
3
missions as Blue Team and everything gives me the feeling Chief will die. But, everything else I've seen about the singleplayer looks really really good.

What are you judging the hype on?

Everything that I read online, gamer friends etc. I said in the first post that I'm not the best qualified, I just don't appreciate being called a troll.

wow talking about defensive....
just asking how you come to that conclusion, if not by neogaf threads or anything else, how did you get to that opinion? thats a legit question, isn't it? Didn't mean to offend you, gosh..

I'm just seeing some people on here who are historically no fan of the franchise pushing that its being received luke warm, which got me a little suspicious that's all. (because I'm seeing it completely different, again I think it's no secret I'm looking at this from the perspective of a hyped avid fan ;))

Well I can't say anything about the preordes thing, but as for the biggest launch in xbox history, they are using those EXACT words:

"Whether they tune into the live broadcast on YouTube or come out and celebrate with us in person at one of our global fan events, we hope Halo Nation will help make Halo 5: Guardians the biggest game launch in Xbox history" -Bonnie Ross

Well the beta multiplayer was pretty fun,i know thats not a good indicator of the whole game, but its all i got to go on along with the media ive seen. Some people will look down on it no matter what, while others will go overboard with exagerated praise.

I was kind of hyped for Halo 4, but definitely not as much as the others. I have a bunch of other games to play right now which might be part of it.

I guess I'm still let down from the Masterchief Collection. I'm not worried that something like that would happen again, but it left a sour taste in my mouth.

That's fair enough, as you can see I answered that question when someone asked me without implying that I am trolling.

I dunno... i gotta say i'm not seeing the hype like i used to see. Maybe i'm wrong, or maybe it's because i'm not all that hyped but there's no denying Halo lost some of that big time show after H4 was so bad.

I really hope this game delivers but i am skeptical

I think people seem to forget that Halo 4’s multiplayer was already heavily scrutinized by many before it even released. Huge posts with concerns were posted from GAF to Waypoint, and most of them were right on the pulse . Halo 4’s multiplayer now was salvaged from all those concerns, but it was a little too late. It depends on who you ask, but they took too long to respond to criticisms (and kept being stubborn on certain aspects). People saw through all the changes and knew that were better games on the market that executed those ideas better and moved on. What was salvages though, for those who stayed, were core ideas that people loved for years, and all the new excessive perk systems was culled for the better.

Halo 5’s multiplayer production has actually been the total opposite. They gave us a fully functional working Arena mode with everybody having base traits, something that was core to the multiplayer suite for years, a year before release. Again, the excessive new things were scrutinized; like for example the dudebro cutscenes and Spartan Chatter. The core of the game though, was actually received decently but there were again concerns over different aspects (these were wide ranging). They responded those concerns fast and went ahead and made some good changes. If you’ve been through their cycle of “Nope, it’s fine.” to “Yeah, we were wrong and we will do better!” their response time and changes were surprising—and a welcome change.

But everything about this upcoming release has been interesting, the beta being released a year before, media can play full campaign levels before release, the map packs being free, upfront about cutting things (Split screen), Forge upgrade, The Ranking system etc. They are being upfront about tons of stuff, compared to their abysmal defense of Halo 4 or the MCC “it’s an old build ” routine. Will it stay that way, who knows but everything so far has been far better and we have a better grasp of the content.

Who pre orders in 2015? Every single real life friend I game with buys digital now. I would imagine this is the norm across the board.

I don't think it will live up to the hype and the review embargo being lifted a day before release is not a good sign.

To be honest these days that's not any kind of indication whatsoever. Day of release maybe. But plenty of very good games have had embargos lifted as close to release as that. Games come in pretty hot these days.

On GAF no, you know there are the usual suspects waiting for the game to disappoint or have something wrong with it to use as 'ammunition' . for fans of the game or without bias...absolutely

there's still a lot of people that pre-order. i only buy digital when i know it's a game i wont resell or trade in.

this one... i might trade this in.

The review embargo is there because the servers don't go online until the 22nd. I would hope reviewers would spend at least the weekend playing the MP before giving a review

It's not. Physical is still huge in consoles. Plus I'm sure pretty sure you can pre-order in digital too.

As a huge Halo fan (I've owned all of them through the years), I'm not even remotely interested in Halo 5. I bought an Xbox One strictly to play MCC and that destroyed any hope I had in the series. Being burned like that, I knew I would purchase H5 pre-owned when it came out. Thankfully, the game doesn't even look interesting.

I'll take my funds and move over to Battlefront for my sci-fi shooter fix.

This, this, this, and this again.

Lol. The first part of your post was legit... But the conclusion is hilarious. I read it like:

"I'm tired of Ferrari ! The last one I bought was full of problems. I'll take my funds and move over to a Renault Clio".

(I'm planning to buy these two games, Halo and Battlefront, though)

Personally I don't think I've been more hyped for a Halo game. After Halo 4 and the abysmal launch of MCC (which eventually was fixed and is a really solid game now) I would have figured both my expectations and hype for this game would be non-existent.

The beta was incredibly fun, worked flawlessly and assured me that 343i had learned from their past mistakes. Everything they've said about Arena has been exactly what I've always wanted out of Halo and a competitive FPS. With the inclusion of Warzone, REQ packs, and free DLC, my expectations will be met as long as the MP works out of the gate and the servers don't melt.

Campaign could go either way. Halo 4's story was pretty rough but everything they've done story-wise since (Spartan Ops, Escalation, Hunt The Truth) has been great. If they can tell a story that is on that level of quality, I'll be satisfied. I don't care about ratios or if I'm spending a considerable amount of time not playing as Chief, I just want an engaging story in that universe.
