DOA4 Revisited

I just finished watching the monster 450MB HD Trailer for DOA4. Things that people have always complained about (animation, gameplay, real-doll looking models) remains the same. Probably the series won't change it's style drastically. But after taking a look at it we have definitely entered the next generation era. The things the game is doing in real time just isn't possible on the current generation systems....

I was a bit hasty in jumping to conclusions after seeing the screenshots but after the video the game is actually rather impressive. Before judging a game, or deciding what is "next-gen" to you or not you should really make sure you check out a good quality movie of the game first or see it in person...

There's really no argument here. Just because something is "high definition" doesn't mean it's next generation. Sony showed what the next generation is all about. The graphics in the Sony demos were mindblowing. The demos in the Xbox presentation were easily confused with current gen Xbox titles. That says it all.

I decide that next gen graphics are on the PS3.

Indeed. The game in motion is amazing. The Xbox couldn't handle everything that is going on. I can't wait to see a cartoon like (anime) version of Street Fighter on this console.... Seriously, it's getting that good.

After reading a comment I had to post the same thing I did in another thread...

Pretty much, the GT demo back then is probably comparably to GT4 (oh yeah, it took them like 5 years to get to that level of eye candy).

You'll get the real deal when people (or you yourself) physically have the controller in their hands and play. Until then, who knows what kind of nonsense you're being fed.

While I don't doubt that the level of detail in the next gen games will be mind blowing, there's no point in being naive. Some GAFers no doubt are still waiting for their "Toy Story" graphics on the PS2 and/or Xbox. Pity the fools. :lol

The DOA4 trailer was mediocre at best. Backgrounds looked ok but there's so much more they can do. The detail of the characters can increase (or need to).

It did kinda look like a high-res XBOX game. Nothing mindblowing.

Still, I can't really think of anything else negative to say after Nintendo's conference. It suddenly seems as if DOA4 is 8 generations ahead. :\

The game would look alot more impressive if they beefed up the lighting model. Light still works in essentially the same way it did back on the dreamcast. No self shadows, the shadows from the level don't do anything to the lighting on the character, etc.

The characters sport an obviously increased geometry count(jann lee was detailed down to the vein in his bicep, incase people didn't notice), and better textures. The clothes looked nice in the one part, but could still use some work. I like the fact that they're atleast trying to make the clothes independent of the model(or so it seems).

Toe that corporate line, you do.

Seriously - there was plenty in the 360 space that was competitive with the PS3, starting with PGR3 and running right down to Gears of War, and these are games that are coming out at or near launch - within 6-12 months. Most of what Sony showed are for games that have little chance of making the launch, and that's 18 months away in the US. The 360 is VERY competitive.

How am I towing the corporate line? The most graphically impressive game that MS showed was Gears of War. Gears of War had massive frame rate problems (granted, it's nowhere near finished). Sony showed another game using UE3.0 that was just as graphically impressive (even moreso, imo) than Gears of War, and it was fluid as hell. And it was done in 2 months.

The duck scene in the bathtub was impressive. The Killzone footage was mindblowing. The graphics were incredible.

I'm just not one of those asshats that thinks the only difference between next generation and this generation is HDTV. There IS going to be a massive graphical leap that will be just as noticeable on normal TVs. Sony's footage will impress anyone on any TV. Microsoft's requires a 1000+ dollar set in order to "impress".

hey guys for the people with crappy computers (me) i converted the wmv to an mpg you can find it on dc++ or titaniumtorrents

I disagree with pretty much everything you wrote, which highlights just how subjective some of this stuff is. Plus, a big part of the 360 appeal is the wicked Live and Media Center functionality built in, up and running now. Sony has nothing to compete with in this space at all, and going by their track record won't have anything close, ever. And that's stuff you can see on any TV. :)

Wow, you guys have really lowered your standards.

I honestly felt, while watching that entire thing--that the Xbox can do that. "the xbox can do that." And "yup, the Xbox can do that."

Maybe not in a technical sense, but surely in a aesthetic in what the "gamer" sees sense.

Sure, maybe the xbox might have to cut down on one or two frames, or a couple of chickens in the backdrop, but that wasn't impressive at all.

Everyone knows the DOA games play like ass, even Tekken 4 had better mechanics. Yes I said Tekken 4, and don't get me started on Virtua Fighter and it's awesomeness.

But in anycase, I enjoyed DOA becuase it looked pretty, and felt good to play.

However, after 4 iterations it's not feeling all that good to play anymore, I want new mechanics, I want a form of depth.

Being that the animations and apparent play style are identical, and truth be told DOA Ultimate looked good, so good that the jump in graphics is a pure testament as to when people say Xbox 1.5

You know, maybe it's because DOA Ultimate sold extremely poor, and Team Ninja just can't allocate the funds for a high budget DOA 4 like they could have with DOA3.

I don't know, or maybe it's the company as a whole that isn't making worth dimes of money.

But in anycase it's all about NG2. But somehow looking at DOA4 (a game technically bigger than NG2 if you take a look at series sales) gets me worried about that game. It seems they are going to reuse the same engine, the same animation, the same moveset etc. etc.

NG2 is probably the few games out there that might make me buy a 360, and it used to be the DOA games, but after looking at that trailer, I can't say so much anymore.

I'll keep any eye out for it and I will say though that the game looked pretty damn good, but then again--DOA 3 looked pretty damn good and to me, pretty much looked the same.

Well, it took a while but I can finally see the trailer... and my computer can't cope with it. :lol

Anyway, from I can see, it's pretty, colorful, but not really mind-blowing. People claiming this looks like a Xbox 1 game are right. Team Ninja were the best coders on Xbox1, but what we see in this trailer screams quick port.
