DOA5:LR Community Soft-Bans 100+ Costumes from Tournaments

Erh...This is what DOA is all about. It's like removing the sex scenes from a porn movie. Silly decision
there's also a thing called gameplay which is kinda relevant especially in tournaments

Good on the community. I can see that creating a more welcoming environment.

Soft-ban if old.

***READ: Part of the community is making this decision, not Koei-Tecmo***

From the Free Step Dodge Forums:

I actually don't know what to make of this. Are we pretending that DOA is something other than an over-sexualized fighter or is this a real attempt to present this game in a way that will appeal to more people?

I do enjoy DOA, but I won't lie, the sex appeal IS what lured me in years ago and I'm sure that tactic is still working.

Game is good apart for sex appeal but sadly some people think its just a mediocre fighter with tits. That's why I dont see this as a bad move.

The only thing that's going to change people's mind is for them to actually play the games. People who think it's a mediocre fighter with tits aren't going to watch streams.

Ya know nothing stops people from taking the game seriously if the outfits are like that...I mean Tekken has outfits like

and those fans of the game can take all of Tekken tournaments seriously. Maybe DOA fans just need to accept what Toei makes and just carry on?

It seems like it'd be easier to make a list of allowable costumes, lol. You can't make a game that has and probably always will have over sexualized women as one of its main "features" anything but that.

Just stupid nobody is going to take the series any more seriously

The community knows the reason why the series continues to exist.

Of course, but let's not try to hide what the biggest selling point of the DOA series is.

There's not much point to this. The people at the tournament are there for the game, and the people watching may be in it for the game or the sexy stuff, either way, if they're watching who cares why. As long as the game is marketed the way it is the image of sexy fighter chicks wont go away and there really isnt anything wrong with that. sex sells, and as long as theres a fun fighter underneath whats the problem. Fighting games are tough to break into and DOA already has established itself one way or the other.

The main reason according to what I heard on the Winter Brawl stream was they're too distracting.

I can understand that. There's a soft ban on Blanka's alternate costume from SSF4 as well because of the same reason. If people can accept that, then they can also accept this.

Besides this is a SOFT BAN if people want to choose those costumes they can, but if they do it's a sign of disrespect towards the entire community.

But they will never play the game if they keep seeing this fanservice PR stuff..

Frankly, it is more Team Ninja fault. The PR for Last Round was kinda embarassing, they just focused on soft skin and how big Honoka's tits were.

All in all this move will be probably useless, but I can see why they want to promote it.

Seems like a smart move. While there's still suggestive costumes and bouncy breasts I don't think costumes that just cover the nipples and crotch will do them any favors.

This seems kinda dumb and pointless.

Are there really people who refuse to play the game because tournaments allow sexy costumes? Is this even remotely going to change public perception of the series, when virtually nobody watches the tournaments anyway?

Random tangent. Community set bans are fascinating. I haven't watched much, but fatalities looked like they killed the pace/hype of matches because of the inherent delay.

You can read into it what you want.

You could argue that they don't really get in the way of the meat and potatoes of the game, which is the fight itself. The crowd might groan because they've seen them all before, but it's hardly something that gets in the way.

The reason I take DOA less serious is because its commands and reversals were so easy. It is a amazing party game, like Smash Bros.

The last DOA I played is DOA 2 ps2. I didn't have a xbox original.

A noble effort, but this will change nothing. DOA will always be known as that pervy 3D fighting game no matter what the community can try to mitigate.

It sucks but that's all on the Team Ninja and Koei Temco for making a competent DOA game but keeping all the elements that will turn off large portions of the human population.

They aren't going to alienate those who are there for the fanservice. That would be bad for business.

It is what it is. I don't care anymore. I'm done trying to convince others to play without putting a controller in their hands.

It's an attempt to not be embarassed by pulling DOA out of your bag and then being told "OH THAT TITTY FIGHTER, HUH!?" because of the outfits.

On one hand, I agree with this "soft-ban" on the other, it's IMPOSSIBLE to enforce because Tecmo doesn't have the option (like they do "exhibition mode" which unlocks ALL outfits for tournaments) to turn off the "risque" outfits to where it's fully-clothed/casual outfits only for tournaments as well.

I think this can be a good thing, but some of those bans are really stupid.
Ninja clan is one of the less sexualised stuff they released in a while. No nudity, no fetish stuff, etc. Ridiculous.

Most people aren't competitive players?

DoA majors have at least as many people as Tekken has the past few years.

I really doubt the number of competetive DOA players outnumber the casual player base who drool over the ladies with skimpy outfits.

Banning sexist/pandering/gross costumes in an effort to get more people to watch DoA.

The irony is not lost on me.

Shrugs. Seems like it would be easier to just require default 1p and 2p outfits instead of having to keep track of the individual numbers.

Oh well. I think it's pointless but I'm also not a tourney player. I can't imagine this sits well in the community though.

I find this fascinating. We really are seeing the beginning of a movement to address sexuality in videogames.

I think this is a step in the right direction especially because it's a community initiated rule that only affects professional tournament settings. People who play for the hyper-sexualized aspect of the game can still do so while the competitive community curates its image. I feel like everybody wins in this situation.

No male characters are on the list. I suspect some players are going to start picking guys outfits that are just the player in their underwear in response.

And there are plenty of thong costumes for men in DoA because everything in DoA is sexualized.

If you ripped all the sexy photographs out of Playboy, would you still be embarrassed if a copy of the magazine slipped out of your bag when your mom/sister/girlfriend was around? This is going to do very little to rehabilitate the game's image.

It's the marketing of the game by TN themselves that creates the perception of it that way. Banning costumes in tournaments barely does anything...

I'm fine with this for tournaments as I can see wanting them to be welcoming for all ages and genders, but I really don't want to see anyone start petitioning the studio to stop making the sexy outfits. It's be like asking MK to cut it out with the gratuitous gore. It's a large part of the fun and appeal for me.

What, so it's like we'll let you choose it but we'll hate you for it? Why even allow it at all then?

They're not doing this to change the perception, they're doing this for the integrity of the matches because those costumes are too distracting for the competitors.

Because you're a fully functional and cognizant adult and you're free to make your own decisions.
