Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Madness | Spoiler Thread

Pretty good movie, audience in my theater went apeshit for John Krasinski's Reed Richards appearance & gasped at Black Bolt's death scene, idk how this got away with a PG-13 rating.

And that AVATAR trailer on the IMAX screen was straight 🔥🔥🔥.

I'll go a bit more in depth later, I mainly liked it but my one real complaint is that for a movie with "Multiverse" in the title we only really ever spend time in three? Granted the multi jump was cool but felt more like a tease.

Yup, it was only ever two alternate universes and in one of them it was mostly in a single room.

Could have been called Dr. Strange in the Alternate Reality cause that's mostly what it was.

Also one thing I'd like to see clarified is what the relationship between universes and timelines are. My understanding is the the base MCU universe has or had some alternate timelines where Captain America "clipped the branches" to avoid problems? Also, did the millions of timeliness Dr. Strange saw in Infinity War happen or were those simply possibilities. Does the base MCU have three timelines (regular, one with no Thanos cause he time traveled to fight in Endgame, and the one with Captain America went to, to go spend time with the girl)?

This movie should make things clear without having to watch What If or Loki (which I may someday but probably not soon).
 
Just saw it and i didnt like it. It had its moments but overall a 6/10 for me

Imo Marvel lost his Mojo. I will give Thor a chance and if its also bad than im not watching any more.

Mordo and Strange didnt even fight once before. How come does Strange now about the hate that Mordo possess against him?

I think the implication is that they've clashed at least once between movies. Considering it's been years in the timeline since Strange 1 (even taking away the 5 year Blip gap), it would be ridiculous for Mordo to have begun his new goal and not run into Strange once given their now opposing viewpoints.

I mean, one very minor element of The Dark Knight that bugged me was it takes place a year after Batman Begins according to official sources. Okay, but Joker clearly was up to enough significant crimes by the end of Begins to warrant Gordon mentioning him to Batman and giving him Joker's card. So what the hell was Joker doing for a year given at the start of TDK barely anyone in the police force or criminal underground seem that familiar with him at all? Yeah, the crooks working for him in the opening scene have vague info about him but nobody seems to yet understand how dangerous he really is, and also how did Joker avoid direct confrontation with Batman for a whole year? I refuse to believe he just laid low for that long.
 
This movie was legit good, because Sam Raimi is still a genius after all these years. I have virtually zero interest in the Marvel films and I think I've seen a total of 4 of them before this one and I still genuinely enjoyed it.

I'm impressed by what Raimi was able to get away with and still somehow come away with a PG-13 rating. This movie was extremely gory and quite frankly I think Disney had to pull some strings with the MPAA to somehow pull this off. It makes me think of the controversy that surrounded Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, which is the movie that caused them to invent the PG-13 rating all those years ago. In terms of getting away with things, I can only think of Live Free or Die Hard as a semi-recent example of another movie that somehow skirted an R rating with a lot of violence and gore.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The MCU is not going to rely on nostalgia and the multiverse moving forward. Just like phase 1-3 did not rely on the Infinity stones every film. The Illuminati in this is not a main plot point, it's more of a side plot point. Xavier has maybe 5 minutes of screen time.
This film could have put 6 random characters that no one knows about as the Illuminati and the films plot wouldn't change. The film isn't relying on the Illuminati to draw in audiences. Considering the Illuminati doesn't change anything plot wise, I don't see why it's an issue to put in a few cameos that people do know.

He needed to think things through a little before jumping to action, no need to be a demigod for that. As the magic authority in the situation it's on him to inform Peter, who doesn't know magic at all, what he's going to do first so things go smooth because we see what can happen if you screw it up. I hadn't noticed such levels of irresponsibility in his character before in any of the earlier MCU appearances.

That theme's execution is very lacklustre, is it really a big lesson for Strange to give things a little more thought when messing with world altering spells? Yeah, his character has regressed compared to earlier MCU movies.

You don't remember him messing with time in the first film almost straight away without any guidance or help? It's in his character to jump in and do things without thinking it through, it's part of his arrogance.

A big part of the promotion for this film was around the Illuminati section though. The first trailer used Xavier's voice as one of its big selling points and then there was an Illuminati teaser which featured stuff like Xavier's yellow chair.

I thought that too but it might actually be a real casting. Everyone else in the Illuminati are the actors that play those character. Black bolt is the same from the cancelled show, Black Captain Marvel was the other pilot and mother of Monica Rambeau from WandaVision. The others we already know.

No way Disney pulled strings to avoid an R rating. Sure there was a handful of not-too-pleasant deaths but the film cuts away from showing too much blood.

Violence in PG-13 movies is quite common and the camera never lingers on any "gore." It might be a slight notch above the gruesomeness one normally sees in the MCU, but hardly anywhere near the R level.

Was he jeopardizing the world with those? You mean to say his sense of responsibility didn't grow since Dr. Strange 1 and it took nearly destroying reality to finally learn?

Maybe I'm expecting too much from phase 4 regarding character development to make such assumptions...

Later MCU movies raise questions about people's power levels, inconsistent use of their abilities and the rules that govern their powers.

I hear the portal usage in this movie make Strange and Wong look like idiots when you consider how the portals could've been used after seeing earlier MCU movies.

Blink from Days of Future Past showed how to make very good use of portals in combat.

These things are always going to be inconsistent, and that goes even more so when you're dealing with a character who deals in an intangible element like magic. The Thanos fights are the peak of a series of films. You can't have your characters constantly firing on all cylinders like that because otherwise you've nowhere to build up to.
 
Got tickets last night for the final showing. It was good. I didn't realize how much I missed some of Raimi's trademark techniques or whatever. I think it's funny how so many people on the net are reacting - they thought they were getting jaunty Spider-Man Raimi, instead they got Drag Me to Hell Raimi.

My biggest surprise was Krasinski showing up as Reed Richards. I admit I giggled though when Scarlet Witch unraveled him. Brutal.

No swearing, no nudity, no sex, was there even any blood?

America need a new rating between PG-13 and R. These 2 ratings are way to restrictive for movie makers.

It's so dumb that a PG-13 movie can only have 1 usage of the word fuck and then R has unlimited usages. There's no middle ground.

This is a great Raimi film for a Disney audience.

This is what retrained Raimi looks like, I can't help to think what the movie would look like if they let the director just work.

I just LOVED the horror bits and the nods to evil dead.

As for Krasinski's Reed Richards, they just need to cast Emily Blunt as Su Storm and we will be set.

Make it happen Marvel.

Americans cheered for John Krazinski, and I said "Who's that?" when someone later mentioned his name in reference to that scene. Looks the part visually though, I'd like to see more of that style Mr Fantastic.

I enjoyed Strange 2 overall, but it wasn't what I expected. It turned out to be more "Wandavision 2: Didn't Actually Get Closure Before" for me, and Strange was there but it was never about him. That was especially apparent by the end of it, when I wondered what they had achieved and the answer was finishing Wanda's story. Chavez exists now but I don't care, and Strange has a third eye but it was immediately made less relevant by setting up the next story. What else was of relevance?

It never really did anything in a constantly moving universe, which would have been fine if it wasn't someone else's story. It also killed of Wanda's whole thing, all that set up in WV of her back story and prophecy and finally snapping out of what she did didn't lead to any growth at all.

Spider-Man was better, Moon Knight was better, hopefully Loki 2 and Thor 4 are better with what they do.

I spent the whole film wondering how it got away with the rating it has, which is 12a in the UK. We have a 15 rating here, which it could easily have been.

Obviously not too much is direct, but it doesn't mean it's necessarily what you'd expect something with the rating(s) this has to have.
 
This movie was my jam. Raimi actually made an mcu action-horror, the mad lad. And the cheese, oh god the cheese was so good.

Batman was fun but this was the best capeshit in years.

Yes, but there was no blood to be seen, maybe some blood ran down from his nose but that's all. Captain Carter death = no blood, there was more blood for Darth Maul in the Phantom Menace.

I didn't and don't see any major articles about her being cast. Only an article from ........ Giantfreakingrobot. Even her Twitter account said "cats out of the bag".
I don't see any articles about Emily Blunt recently being offered any roles either, just about Black Widow.
So yeah, I'd say they did a good job of hiding Charlize Theron.
 
Illuminate was the best part of this. Black Bolt was dope as hell and Reid Richards was unexpected. Guess we aren't getting him as official Reid Richards when that comes along now eh.

Wasn't overly impressed. Expected more multiverse crazy stuff. Walked out thinking maybe I've seen too many super hero movies this last while.

That after credits scene. Was that... Psylocke?

Got very strong 'Carrie' vibes from Wanda chasing Strange, the girl and Christine through the research facility with them closing doors behind her and her looking like a hot mess with what looks like grease and/or blood all over her face from the fight with the robots and the illuminati.
Shit looked creepy AF.

Having to watch other series and films is too much like fucking homework. They are trying to turn this escapism into a way of life. Have to swat up on stuff to get certain references otherwise FOMO well done Disney/Marvel. You are turning it all into a form of social media/consumerism that needs to become a way of life.

It's getting too much. I ain't got time to watch every Disney plus series. Just so a ten second call back or cameo makes sense. Fuck that noise. I'm gonna bail soon. But I'm not the target audience for much longer.

This shit will print money.

I'm thinking going forward Marvel will be the real cash cow compared to Star Wars.

Really enjoyed it. It might be one of my favorite marvel films. I need to let it sink in more but it was really fun. I thought the vfx were particularly good in this one. I really wish the trailers hadn't shown Xaiver. Especially in his yellow hovering chair. Patrick Stewart has gotten old as fuck and I doubt we'll see him again. Reed and Black Bolt were cool as well. In the credits, they showed "X-Men 97 theme song" but I didn't hear it? That theme is iconic but it must have been really low in the background.
