Doctor Who Series 10 |OT| He's Back, and It's About Time

Great episode after a pretty bad one last week. Soon as I saw the clock on the 1000th floor ticking faster and the doctor emphasising the length of the ship I twigged the time dilation - and then had to try to explain to my kids..

How did the master recognise missy though? Presumably he's from the past so shouldn't know he regenerates into her?

I was completely blindsided by Simms - it looked like another famous period drama actor I can't quite remember the name of so that was a big surprise.

I think he just recognised himself through her mannerisms etc

I could only think about how amazing that reveal would've been if no one knew he was back. Seriously. It would've been breathtaking.

Yeah, but I suppose they figured it was inevitable it would leak out (there were rumors before it was confirmed afterall) so why not control it.

Phenomenal episode. Moffat might have some lows, but on his highs, he has always been the best writer of NuWho.

Agreed - He's wrote pretty much my top 5 episodes since 2005, and I'll be sad to see him depart despite thinking S6-S9 overall have been entirely wonky and probably weaker to me than S1-S4. Season 5 was a pretty solid to me but I wasn't a fan of that seasons finale.

S10 personally has been a blast and I'm loving it.

All I'm worried about now is that we have the usual "finale comedown" where everything that was well-structured and moody in the first part turns into an insane mish-mash of ideas going at a thousand miles per hour with little time for any of it to parse or stake its claim. Only The Big Bang was able to pull this off.

Loved that episode. My girlfriend and I pegged that Simm was in disguise the moment he showed up though which was funny.

I look forward to them explaining why Missy doesn't remember her regeneration.

It's long established that when time lords cross their own path, only the last one chronologically remembers it.

So Missy probably woke up at some point newly regenerated, confused and with vague thoughts about cybermen and the doctor needing a friend. Hence the whole plot of Clara and Missys Cyberarmy.

Not really. That's different. Those episodes happen when the Doctor is pulled out of his time stream and into anothers, so there's a causality paradox that resolves itself. This episode was more akin to when Clara was on the phone to 11 while standing with 12.

12 remembered that whole exchange. Why Missy didn't remember us up for debate but I imagine Simms forced regeneration might have caused some memory problems.

Fuck that was a dark and scary episode. Awesome though.

The Master taking off that disguise though was probably one of the cheesiest moments in Doctor Who history for me, just complete narm. Like are you serious that he was literally wearing that disguise for years. Why? Nobody would recognise him

At least you can talk. Who are you?
I would think so.

They're actually attempting to hot drop the new Doctor in the finale.

If they pull this off, it'll be amazing. Especially if it isn't anyone that's been rumoured.

It was full on Scooby Doo and I loved it.

Bill would, since he was PM.

I didn't mind it because it's a Thing the Master Does - there's more than one classic Who story where the Master is hanging around with a goofy alias and disguise - sometimes for no clear reason whatsoever in the plot.

That was phenomenal. Loved the concept of the ship levels running at different times, and the return of the Mondasian Cybermen was as grim and horrifying as I had hoped. That ending...

And I agree with the consensus here, the ONLY reason an episode airing in one week's time would be considered unfinished this far after shooting wrapped would be if they were sneaking something in under the noses of the tabloids. Holy shit guys, I think we're meeting our new Doctor next week!

They did open with a regeneration tease, and they wouldn't pull two regeneration fakeouts in the same series would they?

It wouldn't surprise me if they did actually

Interesting point of interest. They said during the Q&A that the pre-credits scene was filmed last week.

So was the story about the Doctor regenerating in the Xmas special a fake-out? Are we going to see it happen next week?

Was it ever confirmed explicitly that the regeneration was in the Christmas special? I'm starting to wonder if the special will be a flashback, or a two-Doctor episode.

I get the impression Moff would love to reveal the next Doctor within an episode. Has that ever actually happened?!

Under Moffat?... nope, but The Parting of the Ways showed the 9th regeneration, and the first look with the Tenth Doctor (like 5 secs before the credits... xD)...

Hang on, if Missy is the latest regeneration of The Master (parking the theory that she's not The Master at all for a sec), why did she looked surprised at Simm's reveal and seemingly didn't remember any of this?

No, I mean ever, throughout the show's history. We knew Tennant was the next Doctor before we saw the regeneration in Parting of the Ways.

If they got the new doctor in for 1 shot I think they could keep that under wraps.

But I would bet if they are doing the regeneration next episode and not in xmas they will probably do the official announcement before it airs anyway though just because the BBC is like that.

Would be great to have a surprise like that though. Reminds me a little of the John Hurt reveal.

I really do think we'll see the next doctor next week. Especially with Moffat saying the episode isn't even finished yet. And
The Mirror said the next doctor would first appear in the series rather than the Christmas special.

Ahhh... got it. But wait, so the BBC has always announced every next Doctor before their regeneration eps? even on the original series?

Absolutely on the new series. Probably on the latter part of the original. Couldn't say for the first stories.

We know that regeneration is an ordeal for time lords, sooo if we factor in the Master being unhinged and dying when we last saw him it wouldn't be out of the question that Missy would have blank spots in her memories.

Have to feel bad for bill, she had to watch the doctor explain everything for months or years when he could have just skipped all of that and explained it on the ride down.

Wonder what the regeneration intro means, is he mad that he failed bill still or is he mad that missy went back to her old ways and it got him killed. But regenerating alone on a frozen planet is a sad way to have him say goodbye.

Capaldi said he both shot hisdeath scene AND his last episode would be the Christmas special during an interview on British late night.

My guess: Two Doctor special.

Hard to find those announcements now. Maybe?

Yes, all modern Doctors were unveiled way ahead of their debut.

David Tennant was announced in the middle of Season 1's airing, Matt Smith before Tennant's last special, Peter Capaldi before they shot the 50th anniversary and Matt Smith's last Christmas special.

Both of those don't rule out a surprise regeneration next week, so yeah, I agree with ya!

You guys trying to tell me the one thing I thought for sure would be impossible to do in this modern era of entertainment news is the one thing Moffat's actually looking to pull off? And he might fuck around and actually do it?

Sneak a goddamn Doctor into the canon without the whole world finding out about it first?

I mean - I guess he did that with John Hurt already. But he manages to go two-for-two here, wow.

You should rewatch all his previous appearances.

He would regularly just disguise himself for no reason at all. I LOVED it.
