Indeed. In his defense, I believe he had to knock out a cheap episode quickly when another script fell through.

BBC America is showing A Christmas Carol (the 2010 Christmas ep) on Christmas day in the US.

Still gonna download it
Do they have BBC America in hd?

Any chance the airing of the Christmas special on Christmas in the US could be hinting towards all of Series 6 being shown same day in US/Britain? Because that'd be much appreciated.

That is Ferguson's schtick. I thought the interview was a lot of fun. Especially the real awkward pause they got out of Smith.

Haha the awkward pauses are great. And I also laughed when Matt Smith was talking about how attractive Hardwick's girlfriend is to which he responds "I'm a huge fan so you can have sex with her if you like"

Just finished Series 5. Fucking awesome, just like I expected. The Van Gogh episode was great and touching, and it is always nice to see Bill Nighy. "The Lodger" was just awesome though. One of the funniest and most enjoyable episodes. And "The Big Bang" was all kinds of awesome. I love time travel stories that keep folding in on themselves as they progress.

My love for Moffatt is solidified more than ever now. I need to go revisit the episodes to tell which is my fave of the season, but it was just really fucking great. "The Time of Angels" is near the top now, just because it had the Weeping Angels. The whole scene with Amy and the video loop of the Angel was just awesome.

Is it going to be a thing of Moffatt's to get people outside the Whoverse or celebs to write for the show? This series had Richard Curtis (Love Actually, Vicar of Dibley) writing an episode, and next year he has Neil Fucking Gaiman.

Cannot fucking wait for Series 6, especially the Neil Gaiman episode.

I'm surprised at the love that 'The Lodger' gets since it was a massive low-point of the series for me. Granted I despise Cordon and am genuinely embarrassed by the vfx at the end (which wasn't done by us, shut up), but the awkward flirting from the supporting characters irked on me, even if the doctor did get some good lines. It was also nice to see him act 'normal', but yeah, mental write-off for me.

...actually, I think I bitched about this in the last thread too :(

It was a shame too, since this was one of two episodes (the other being the awesome 'Amy's Choice') which was completely new to me and a sort of wanted something special from. I'll watch it again when the DvDs arrive and see if anything has changed.

I enjoyed The Lodger, but I think it was mainly because I went in expecting a Love & Monsters or Fear Her quality story.

It was a pleasant surprise, rather than a particularly great episode.

That might be why I enjoyed it so much. Just stupid, goofy fun. Not a particularly great storyline, but just funny to see the Doctor attempt to act like a bloke.

I thought it was a fantastic lightweight episode before the big finale. Something enjoyable and quirky before all the "Oh no, the universe is dying!" business.

Granted I despise Cordon
Other than the obvious reason of overexposure, I never quite understood the hate for Corden.

Are you talking about the space ship teleporting away or the backwards force lightning?

What I think that The Lodger is particularly good at is showing the difference between Tennant and Smith. For an ancient alien, Ten felt somewhat too suave and adaptable. This episode showed how Eleven is much more alien; much more a fish out of water and much less a know-it-all that explains everything with "Ohhhh, it's _________".

It was a shame too, since this was one of two episodes (the other being the awesome 'Amy's Choice') which was completely new to me and a sort of wanted something special from.
Reckon you could have done a better job with the eyes-in-mouths and sand-dissolving effects in Amy's Choice? The FX put a bit of a dampener on an otherwise terrific episode.

I'll watch it again when the DvDs arrive and see if anything has changed.
DVD? But the Limited Edition Steelbook Blu-ray is but £50 (on Amazon - see OP for link).

Don't get me wrong, I liked the lighthearted stance it took and some of the lines were classic 'that's the one with the sticks'. But I also found the supporting cast a bit irritating, which goes for the girl too. Which is something I can't really claim for any other who character. This could have been the 'will they wont they' sections of dialogue though.
I did however also like the perspective of someone 'normal' having to deal with the doctor in close proximity while not having the context of who he is (and also having what could be called a degree of power over him).

I'd hardly heard of him until the spat he had with Patrick Stewart right before this episode. I'm not saying that either of them was right or wrong, just that he acted like way more of a dick than he needed to. Sure, neither of them was on best form, but one of them had the excuse of being off his face.
I dunno, it sounds completely judgemental when I say it back to myself (probably because it is) but he just came off as being not a particularly nice person. At all.

Spaceship, I'd forgotten about the lightning. Urk.

Yup, it's not really fair to compare us. Though don't take that as a slight against the talent of the individuals who made it, but it's obvious that they lacked the manpower and resources to really make it look good (relatively, anyway, I don't consider Who to be our best work).

I'm not allowed to buy any who crap for myself because I know I'll get at least three copies of everything over Christmas.

is there a streaming link for that ferguson interview?

Also, Dr Who on Children in Need tonight around 8pm. Will have some 'special guests' visiting the Tardis (most likely an embarrasing 'comedy' sketch) and a preview of the Christmas special.

Huh. I hadn't even noticed the spoiler in that second pic until someone pointed it out. Oh well, I don't mind me the spoilers.

Yeah, I'm not too bothered by it myself. Some might be though.

I think the presence of said spoiler was mentioned in the press release for the US episode? Or at least mentioned alongside it.

I don't *hate* him, but I don't think Ruth Jones ever got anywhere near as much recognition for her contribution to Gavin & Stacey. And she gets Torchwood, whereas Corden gets Who itself. There's no justice!

If the spoiler is
River Song
, I'm pretty sure
she
was mentioned in the press release. If the spoiler is something else, I haven't noticed it :lol

either way, i removed it.

Nice to see
River
in the pic. But no pictures of the yummy Amy Pond? For shame.

Love the cowboy hat pic though. Maybe he can get a huge belt buckle in the episode too. Huge belt buckles are cool.

Right, I updated the OP with the Christmas trailer. I wouldn't normally make a deal out of it, but I had to go into - shudder - my old computer to dig out the template and Chrome wouldn't work so I had to use - even bigger shudder - Internet Explorer.

The things I do for you, honestly!

Its all for love sir...

Christmas episode synopsis:

Amy and Rory are trapped on a crashing space liner, and the only way The Doctor can rescue them is to save the soul of a lonely old miser, in a festive edition of the time-travelling adventure, written by Steven Moffat. But is Kazran Sardick, the richest man in Sardicktown, beyond redemption? And what is lurking in the fogs of Christmas Eve?

For those of you wondering when the Series 5 soundtrack would get released in the U.S., according to an e-mail I got from Silva Screen Records: February 2011.

Seems like they might be spinning too many plates, but I think it'll probably be executed pretty well. I think it'll be superior to the last two Christmas episodes at least - those being The Next Doctor and The End of Time Part I.

In other news, you'll never guess what won Best Television Series at the Writers' Guild Awards last night! Well, it wasn't Doctor Who. It was Toby "Vampires of Venice" Whithouse's Being Human, which I'd recommend to older Who fans. Well, the second series at least.

First up BBC America have announced that the Christmas special, entitled "A Christmas Carol", will be fast tracked to certain international territories including the U.S. and Australia where, with time zone differences taken into account, it will air literally just a few hours after the U.K. broadcast (December 25th in the U.S., December 26th in Australia).

The Steven Moffat-penned episode sounds like a different spin on the Dickens classic, best guess is that instead of three ghosts visiting the same man it's one ghost (The Doctor) visiting a man at three different stages in his life as the cast list features the characters 'Young Kazran', 'Middle Kazran' and 'Older Kazran' with the last played by "Harry Potter" and "The Singing Detective" star Michael Gambon.

Amy and Rory are on their honeymoon and separated from The Doctor for much of the episode as he is planet-side while they are on a pleasure cruise in a spaceship orbiting above that comes under attack.

The trailer for the special aired Friday night in the UK during the "Children in Need" appeal and can be watched below. Most revealing is a roving fin of what's being called 'a flying shark', there's also a lot of people seemingly frozen in stasis, and Rory and Amy dressed in their old Roman and policewoman kissogram outfits respectively (will be curious to see how Moffat does a 'bedroom role play' joke with plenty of kids watching).

The seven episode sixth season kicks off with a two-parter set in 1960's America which Moffat has also penned. Filming is underway in Utah on the story which traverses from Monument Valley to the Oval Office, and shots of Amy Pond running in the desert can be found here. It's been confirmed that River Song (Alex Kingston) will play a big part in this story, while other guest stars include Mark Sheppard ("Supernatural," "Galactica") and Stuart Milligan ("Jonathan Creek").

Beloved comic author Neil Gaiman penned the third episode in which the TARDIS breaks down on an alien junkyard world where the crew encounter Idris (Suranne Jones), a woman who is preparing for death and has apparently met The Doctor before.

The fourth episode, penned by Mark Gatiss and entitled "What Are Little Boys Made Of", that apparently might deal with scary dolls that come to life on a modern day council estate.

Episodes five and six will be a two-parter penned by Matthew Graham ("Life on Mars," "Ashes to Ashes") in which "the Doctor will face a dilemma the like of which he’s never seen before". The titles are rumoured to be "The Rebel Flesh" and "Gangers", while a snipped from the show's official mag makes mention of The Doctor recalling events from the Tom Baker era in the 70's.

The seventh episode is the first of a two-parter which will be resolved when the show resumes in the Fall. Moffat is penning this one and says this is where a major revelation about The Doctor is made, and is the one where we learn the truth about River Song.

First episode aired 47 years ago today. Same day Kennedy was assassinated.
