Doctor Who Series Seven |OT| The Question You've Been Running From All Your Life

Smith's done a lot of extracurricular stuff, though, what with Doctor Who Live, The Crash of the Elysium, the Proms, the prequels, Pond Life, the Sarah Jane Adventures et al.

Also, he's had to carry more episodes than Tennant did; no Doctor lites, and he carried episodes like A Christmas Carol or The Wedding of River Song more than Tennant did outside of Midnight.

Any chance Moffat is gonna leave as well? That would be sweet.

Richard E Grant is apparently back as The Great Intelligence. That could be fun, unless it's a flashback and they're counting it as an appearance.
It's notable that REG is never credited as The Great Intelligence in The Snowmen. It'd be odd if he was credited as that in flashbacks.

Also - and I'll spoiler this too, just in case -
Eve de Leon Allen is in this episode too. She'll be playing her Last Cyberman character, Angie. If you remember, it was Eve's script that was found in the back of a cab late last year.
I'm guessing an end of episode, return to Earth cliffhanger.

In terms of idle speculation, I noticed the clip outside Clara's house mentioned Nina, the girl that Oswin fancied in the future. Maybe Clara herself is not the only recurring thing?

If we do get a new Doctor any time soon I really do hope they go in a different direction than the previous two, maybe one that is more serious. I know some people might be up in arms against such a thing but one of the brilliant things about Doctor Who is how the doctor can change and be someone entirely different. I really want to see that.

I wonder how they'll readress Clara's status as a Dalek.
Do they need to? We still aren't clear on exactly who or what Clara is, but at the moment it's perhaps reasonably safe to conclude that both the Claras we've known have died. The one who was a Dalek may have no relation to the one we meet next. Other than being the same person. I'm not sure there's another show on television where those two sentences can exist together and make perfect sense.

Tom Baker to Peter Davidson was a hard transition - I cried when he fell off the radio telescope.

Looking forward to the second half

Something like the ninth Doctor?

If Smith leaving at Christmas is true, and we already know that Moffat's planning series 8 already... does that not suggest Moffat's in for a longer haul than we suspected? I doubt he's going to introduce a new Doctor for a single series and leave a showrunner with a a Doctor he didn't pick.

You'll get used to a new theme. I missed Tennant's Series 4 theme for a while, but I Am The Doctor made up for it. Murray Gold's an excellent composer for the show.

Why are you spoiler tagging speculations? New thread rule?

The only way I can see Moffat leave anytime soon is if he were forced out by the BBC. I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon, and I see no reason for that to happen.

Just being cautious, because I think the Sun report may well have some validity. Probably not necessary, but eh.

I think Moffat himself is incredibly secure in his job. He puts out two of the BBC's most critically acclaimed series; not even Russell T. Davies did that. It's his until he doesn't want it any more.

Doctor Who and Sherlock would probably keep getting made as prestige projects, even if they didn't pull in some of the biggest ratings on British telly.

RTD had very little to do with the Sarah Jane Adventures past the pilot, and Torchwood only came close to being a critical success during Doctor Who's gap year.

Well, it depends on your definition of 'very little' - he didn't write many SJA episodes, but he commissioned every episode, gave every writer their spec for what their story should be and rewrote every single episode that went out... so he was still pretty involved, if not as involved as Moffat is with Sherlock. Torchwood, you can't forget, was so popular in Series 1 they bumped it up a channel from digital to terrestrial for series 2 and rebroadcast series 1... and its most successful series was the one he was most hands-on with.

I'm known for being a fan of RTD in general (if not always his writing), I know, but he's pretty much one of the most accomplished British TV writers ever, and it can't really be overstated. Moffat is too, mind, just in a bit of a different way.

I was always under the impression that Phil Ford was far more hands-on with TSJA than RTD was (ditto Chibnall for Torchwood 1 and 2, actually) but I'm willing to concede the point if that's the case. I wasn't aware of him doing extensive rewrites for the spinoffs.

Don't get me wrong, I loved RTD's work, but I'd argue that maintaining Doctor Who and Sherlock is more prized by the BBC than maintaining Doctor Who and Doctor Who's spinoffs, though.

I wouldn't argue that RTD's got a richer career in drama than Moffat does, FWIW.

EDIT:Sylvester McCoy dropped a massive, clanging great hint on the One Show the other day.

There's news and embargoed interviews about the Anniversary Special being released on Tuesday.

^The book he did gives a good glimpse into it. He talks about SJA/Torchwood rewrites a lot. Seems like he stopped rewriting Torchwood sometime halfway through Series 1 and didn't go back to extensive rewrites until CoE, but SJA he was always with manning the helm, even after he left Who. He loves kids TV, though. That's where his heart is.

God, I hope "I Am The Doctor" goes. It's a lovely piece of music, but feels so overused in the past few years. I know Murray Gold is (largely thanks to Who) busier than ever and now based out of New York rather than Cardiff (quite the upgrade), but the 'action music' so to speak changed every year before.

Westminster Bridge formed the backbone for action scenes featuring the Ninth Doctor and Rose, then 'New Adventures' and a few others for the Tenth and Rose, All the Strange, Strange Creatures for Martha and Ten, and Corridors and Fire Escapes for Donna and Ten - all underpinned by the broader 'Doctor's Theme' linked before.

For whatever reason, almost every majorly reused theme since Series 5 has been pinned onto a version of the melody of I Am The Doctor, and I love that bloody track but I'm starting to get bored. I was really hoping Clara would usher in a new action theme, but apparently not. Hopefully a new Doctor does. I really liked how those old themes slipped out of use - like, Rose's action theme with the Ninth Doctor shows up once with the Tenth when they have their first TARDIS trip together, and New Adventures and some other Rose themes show up when she returns in Series 4. Same for Martha. A bunch of the Tenth Doctor's themes run throughout the first few episodes of Series 5 as people get used to the Eleventh, and then finally slip away in around Episode 5 or something. I like the music as this transnational thing.

I focus on the music more than your average person, mind, I admit.

This post reminds me how much I miss Westminster Bridge as a track. Maybe it'll cameo in The Bells of Saint John.

I think the problem is that I Am The Doctor has become indelibly linked with this incarnation of the show. With the exception of All The Strange Strange Creatures, which was used in the big Series 3 and Series 4 trailers, none of those other pieces have become as indelibly linked with the series as I Am The Doctor has. It's featured in near as damnit every next time trailer for the past 3 years, it's on most of the adverts... for better or for worse, it's the most iconic and popular theme that Gold's put out. I can see them limiting the usage of it somewhat (it was used less in The Snowmen than we've seen for a while) and bringing in a new action theme, but I think it'll be present for the rest of Smith's tenure.

EDIT: Argh, I can remember a site with all the different musical cues in each episode listed, but I can't for the life of me find it. Does anyone have a link?

Ah, man, the Doctor Who MIDI Archive's gone too. Sadness.

It was pretty obvious who it was going to be, but it was still nice, I wonder if she will remember him, but unlike Amy the obsession won't be there, lol.

Looked like Roath Park Lake here in Cardiff, it's been a while since I've been down there but I recognise the big hill going up one side of the park to the big pathway before the lake.

What theme is that they're using? I think I recognize it from Vincent and the Doctor, but without a soundtrack or track listing I'm useless at finding these.

Speaking of the music: Yeah, it's a foregone conclusion that Eleven's theme will go with Eleven, even if it's become pretty much the signature music for Doctor Who, does it seem to anyone else that they've reworked the main theme yet again? It seems a little less orchestrated, a little more synthesized. Burblier. a little dirtier.

I mean, I like it, I'm just curious to hear the whole thing.

Chili Con Carnage!
Like the prequel but Moffat is getting a bit predictable, I knew what was going on there as soon as she sat on the swing.
