Yes, if you pretend that there is absolutely no context to it at all and that he hasn't been dogged with questions about his treatment of women in his work for years, it's completely harmless.

Back in reality, however, it just winds up undoing what was a really good answer to the question.

I think it's a pretty harmless joke at Helen Mirren's expense but as you say, bearing in mind all the accusations that have been levelled at him in the past it was a pretty stupid thing to say.

If Moffat doesn't think there's a problem with his writing of women, why in the fuck would he tread on eggshells?

There's been some ridiculous shit said about Moffat and sexism over the years, and, frankly, I have absolutely zero problem with him kicking back a bit.

Except he wasn't. At all.

Your posts are the equivalent to sticking your fingers in your ear and going NANANANANNANANNANANNANANANA.

I like Moffat as a writer. I even like him as a writer of female characters. But god damn is he tone deaf when it comes to PR on the subject and it hurts both him and the show. I've known a lot of normal average people who've gotten turned off his run because he runs his mouth like this, "kicking back" at fans. Like that's something to be proud of.

If he doesn't agree with the accusations, I fail to see how.

If you think Moffat's a sexist, you thought the gag was sexist. If you don't, you didn't. Nothing changes.

I don't deny that the man's got an issue with PR- Christ alone knows I've railed against it in the best. That does not, however, extend to this Queen gag, and particularly not in the context of the rest of the answer he gave.

Mind you, you're the one who's said in the past that posters are inherently sexist for not wanting a woman in the role, so I'm afraid we'll find little common ground on this one.

In fairness, anybody who has been following behind-the-scenes stuff knows full well that Moffat is of the opinion that the Doctor is a male character. He was forced to soften his position by the BBC to "anything could happen!" when he took over, but I doubt it's changed from during Series 2 when he made comments very clearly that he didn't 'believe' in him ever changing gender.

I almost feel like that comment was him sniping back at being made to do the 'it could be a woman!!' song and dance. An ill-chosen snipe. He's a snide fucker, always has been.

I'm not saying that makes him sexist! I agree. I'd rather the Doctor remained a man (of any race or orientation) - the show can build strong women in other places. Which, admittedly, isn't Moffat's strong suit. But c'est la vie.

You won't hear me arguing that the Queen joke was a good or sensible thing to have said, particularly considering it folds under the slightest bit of scrutiny. What I will not say, however, is that there should be any weight assigned to this beyond it being an off-the-cuff gag at Mirren's expense, and that he should avoid such things for fear of sexism.

I don't think he's sexist but he knows how a number of people feel about him and what their reaction would be to that joke. It just feels like he's baiting people on purpose and causing unnecessary trouble.

I've got Sky News on in the background and they just said 'Peter Capaldi will first appear as the Doctor in November'. They're as likely to just be wrong than anything else, but still.

How dare people suggest someone not be a dick!

I daresay that's precisely what he's doing.

Snide and childish, absolutely, but I'd question exactly how much trouble it'd cause for him that didn't already exist.

Please show me precisely where I said this was a good or wise thing for Moffat to have said.

In retrospect, if Matt really is leaving at Christmas, it's kind of a shame that they couldn't keep Amy and Rory around for one last series. It would have been kind of nice to have the same two companions last for the entire run of a Doctor.

I think my favorite thing about seeing a new Doctor being announced on Doctor Who is watching all the people be butthurt about it all.

First its he's too ugly, because Patrick Troughton, Tom Baker, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy & Christopher Eccelston where all the most attractive guys ever.

And then its that the Doctor isn't a female, I have no issue with the Doctor being male or female and if the precedent had been there in the past then yeah it would be cool, but any move now to have a female actor play the role would just come across as a publicity stunt.

As in the past and with each and every regeneration I've seen in the past I'm excited to see how Peter Capaldi goes in the role and hope he brings something fresh and different to the show.

Matt leaving really looks like when Tom left. Introduced new companions late in their respective run, regenerate with a crew of several companions present to shepherd in the new guy.

And possibly a few other versions of himself if it happens in the 50th.

The companions list in the intro of that show (by list I mean the quick fade through all of them) is interesting, as one could treat it as a manner of confirming if some people are 'canon' as actual companions or not. Wilf and Mickey are in it, for instance, if you watch carefully.

Also getting a relativity well known actor to replace him ala Peter Davidson

Also new guy is called Peter as well :p

Made a Wallpaper (Actually a XBMC background) for the occasion. Someone might get some use out of it.

Can we get the hunter and the queen from Dinosaurs on a Spaceship back please? Give them actual characters and show us how people who aren't young folks from contemporary England handle time travel.

The companion will continue to be Jenna, right? I really hope they totally remove the affection/kissing/love angle from that relationship, then. Fucking tired of that shit with his companions.

The 30 year age difference alone will probably discourage that angle... at least for now.

Kissed a mod for a tag; liked it
I for one fully support the idea of Lestrade being in Doctor Who more.
Oh that's where I've seen him before! We're watching Sherlock atm and I'm like I know he's on Doctor Who, but who did he play again? Thanks for clearing that up!

I mean I get it, ya know? Here comes The Doctor rescuing all these poor people from the boredom of their 9-to-5 existences, and naturally some of them are going to get enraptured with the man. He can do anything! But I feel the point has been done to death, give The Doctor's loins a rest :p

I loved those characters. In fact every character in that episode was perfect including Solomon and Rory's Dad.

Lots of weird little suggestions. Wonder if it's going to leak definitively if Matt is filming Christmas in the next few weeks or not. Two British news places have said Capaldi will "debut in November" but it really isn't clear if wires are crossed or what.

Meanwhile there's a quote from the BBC One commissioner from after the event where he talks about Capaldi debuting at Christmas - but his wording is such that it sounds like more than a 30 second scene at the end of the show. Plus the Smith hair conundrum. Still so much we don't know!

EDIT: Wow at this quote from Capaldi from an old interview:

“When I was a kid, being a huge Doctor Who fan, I wrote numerous letters to the Doctor Who office largely inquiring about how the show was made.”

It was 1972 and Doctor Who was entering its ninth season on BBC 1.

“I was thrilled to have delivered to me a large package from the BBC containing two full studio scripts for the Jon Pertwee serial ‘The Mutants’, which they were making at the time.

“The package also contained set designs and studio floor plans for these episodes and a delightful letter from [producer] Barry Letts giving me an idea what all this stuff was.

“It was a fantastic exciting insight into both Doctor Who and television production generally. I had never seen a script in any form whatsoever before then and was immediately fascinated by the documents. And of course Barry’s kindness was a trigger to my ambition to work somehow (I didn’t know how) in TV. The scripts are still sitting on my bookshelf downstairs.”

And then he did the Hartnell pose deliberately:

We've got another Tennant on our hands! A full on, proper, old school fan. Awesome.

You know, as good as the new brass Daleks look, I do really miss the old grey and blue design (even though I think I only saw like one and a half serials with them :lol)

There's some fan-built ones with the new design and that colour scheme. Beautiful:

Its really funny, when I was working on the Dalek construction class none of the kids had even seen a blue and grey one before, all they knew was the revival, but when we showed them a picture it was almost unanimously decided to go with that color scheme.

I really loved the red & gold one from Series 4, but all that stuff they bolted around the dome section to make it stand out looks rubbish. A regular dalek with that colour scheme would be great, though.

Weirdly, my favourite is obscure and tiny - but the Emperor Guard Daleks from Bad Wolf/Parting of the Ways. They're the same gold ones, except the entire head section is in matte black. They're only seen from afar in the show, but there's some fan builds, again. The fact the dome is matte while the rest is still shiny is really striking. Looks great.

That classic look is just amazing.

That said I don't think they would go back to that, I think they want to have the Cybermen as the Silver Villians and Daleks as Gold, just to have a way for them to stand out from each other.

When Capaldi was announced, John Hurt tweeted something that may have been a mild slip regarding the 50th and possibly beyond:

"Congratulations, Peter Capaldi. I'm suboth and we will have a lot of fun"

...which doesn't make much bloody sense! Suboth? And -- "we will have a lot of fun"? I think it was a garbled "I'm sure both of us will have a lot of fun." Is his character sticking around?

The tweet was deleted shortly after and replaced with the more generic: "Congratulations to Peter Capaldi and to the BBC. Another splendid Doctor!"

Hmm.

Didn't Bleeding Cool talk about Hurt's Doctor making appearances next year?

Mind you, Bleeding Cool's track record for Who is little short of piss-poor, so it could be a lucky guess.

Well, the same person is implying he's quite possibly the one who'll be involved, haha. In order to make a movie the BBC would 'sell' the rights of the series to BBC Worldwide, and they'd produce, as regular BBC doesn't 'do' movies. It'd then be up to Worldwide brass who writes, directs, etc.

Not really, it would probably be a co-production between the PS BBC and BBC Films, which already exists as a company and is a bit more apart from BBC WW (and a bit more involved with BBC Drama...).

True. Different arrangement exist, though. This would-be leaker is suggesting it'd be like a Top Gear arrangement - Top Gear is now 100% made by Worldwide.

My Apartment, or the 120 Screenings of Salo
It just dawned on me that we've already seen the last episode of Doctor Who in which Matt Smith is the sole Doctor. :(

I've had a day to think about it-and I'm totally onboard with him now-it's going to be a jarring transition but I think it's going to be the best thing for the show. I'm now incredibly excited to see what the show is going to be like now.

Is it 100% made by them? I knew they bought Bedder 6 but thought that was a brand rights thing - but didn't know if that included the actual production of the TV show.

I think my favourite old Dalek colour scheme was the silver and black used in Death to the Daleks.

As I recall, it was only used in that serial.
