Carano wasn't as marketable. Everything else you've said is pretty spot on though. Rousey is more marketable because of her ability to make people love her or hate her. That's infinitely more marketable than a fighter that only has people that love them. Chael Sonnen and Floyd Mayweather can attest to that.
That's a good point. I give extra credit to Carano though for making it big without the UFC. Not even Rousey can say that.

I know a girl who plays. She went over seas in 2013 to play for the U.S. Women's team. She actually played softball on my coed team for a couple years. She has always been a good athlete, playing football through her highschool career. She's not really big, only about 5'6", but she is good.

you know the sad part? They fucking play their hearts out every game. they took this as a serious competition.

That last pic really shows it, too. I don't know if it's sad but it makes it clear that clearly women aren't too dainty to play football.

It's hard to call for me though. Carano made a bunch of noise but Rousey was more dominant in less time. There's an argument to be made that had Strikeforce not folded... Rousey would've eclipsed Carano shortly. Both of them deserved their success though. Tremendous athletes.

Women's sports aren't seen as serious by many Americans. Even the WNBA, with all its prestige, gets its fair share of sexist jokes.

Do people call it gridiron still, like when they are going to a game or watching it on TV do you say "I'm watching gridiron" or is it just football?
No one calls it gridiron. It's just "football" because it's the most dominant code of football in the US. I've heard the field called a "gridiron," much as soccer people refer the field as a "pitch."

"American football" is the term I've always heard when people are distinguishing it from other football codes (even when discussing "Canadian football,") but I tend to prefer "tackle football" because it's more descriptive of the game - successful tackles always end the run of play (whereas tackles seem to be a much more minor element in rugby and soccer.) It's also less tied to geography/politics. "Tackle football," however, is not widely used, I can only think of a handful of times that I've heard it used.

Lingerie football players don't even get a salary. They get a percentage of the gate sales (which vary depending on if they win or lose) and sometimes essentially end up making less than minimum wage per hour.

Maybe the discrepancy makes sense, yeah. Still a shame though.
This is the saddest thing I've read all day. These female athletes should be millionaires.

I doubt the sponsorships and TV deals are that big, a cut of the gate seems like a good deal. (Of course, if there is another decent source of revenue, they should be included in that as well.)

Holy crap. They are seriously playing hard and without half the protection that the male players get. I would hate to see the bruises they have, the next day. They deserve so much more credit than they get.

Tennis is taken seriously I think. Problem with american football and basketball is that the size of the courts, ball, basket heights, etc are all designed for tall or big ass men. Women can do it sure, but they won't be able to produce the same highlight reels as men because the sports are designed for men.

Other sports that don't rely on extreme strength or height tend to support women very well.

The last time I checked the statistics though.. Women's divisions in MMA have more "finishes" through TKO or Submissions than most Mens divisions.

In any case.. Women's sports aren't given much attention in the US. Outside of Olympics, the most push any Women's sport has gotten was the WNBA which didn't get Television coverage very long. Outside of that I think Women's Soccer and Women's Football (Lingerie League) got the next biggest pushes as far as TV is concerned. I think there's just too much of a stigma for most American households unfortunately.

Recently Women's MMA has been getting coverage but it's different situation in that Women's MMA fights are on the same fight cards as Men's.

Can I see your statistics? There are generally less finishes in the lighter weight classes, men or women. Women MMA only has lighter weight classes.

From the perspective of a spectator, professional women sports make no sense at all. Why watch women play when their level of play is similar to that of the lower divisions of the men's leagues? No matter how much money you throw at it, this fact will never change. That's the reason why I stopped watching women's tennis (when I was actually still watching tennis). It was just so much slower and less exciting than men's tennis.

Women's Tennis is more popular than men's at times.

That is the only sport I can think of that the women's side rivals the men's in popularity. In the United States anyway.

Women have historically been driven away from participating in sports. Women weren't even officially allowed to run the Boston Marathon until 1972. They are still actively pushed away from participation, even in women-only leagues.

So sure, if you complete ignore the context as to why the talent pool is smaller on the women's side of athletics, your point could be made.

Volleyball, ice skating, synchronized swimming, various gymnastic disciplines, infact, several Olympic disciplines seem to be on par to me (marathon, high jump, pole vault, etc).
Don't know about the US, but i'd say these are popular in their female form.

Let me answer it like this... 80% or more Americans just thought the same thing I did, which is "there's a women's NFL?"

I know that lingerie football is a thing.

This is basically my answer. OP, you really should have specified woman's rugby in the title....I still didn't know there was a woman's rugby.

Same in the US. On par or more popular in fact.

You arent making up the physical differences between men and women with an increased talent pool for women. I personally am fine with any attempts to make women sports more popular, but I doubt I will watch any outside of the Olympics for the reasons above.

I can't find the weight class by weight class numbers unfortunately but here's what I did find:

Women's MMA in 2013 had 145 decisions, 144 submissions, 97 TKOs, 22 knockouts, two no contests. That's 263 finishes in 410 fights. Approximately 64% finish rate.

There's no single division that boast a higher finish rate and when combined it's lower overall.

Lol who is claiming that it has anything to do with the talent pool? The strongest and fastest men will always be stronger and faster than the strongest and fastest women and that makes women sports subpar viewing for the spectator.

I knew about the disgusting lingerie leagues, and never took those seriously. But I didn't know there were actually 3 leagues at the moment playing full contact football.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NGn-XC9HwM

There's a whole game, all 2 hours of one. From a handful of plays I watched it feels very amateurish, so I can see why it hasn't caught on. Honestly feels like a bunch of women who wanted to play football on a team, got some gear and started playing.

Unless we are totally talking about rugby here. I only know one person who watches rugby, and it's because she likes to watch the men play it...and I don't see her taking it seriously.

I appreciate the response. Where does it say the Men's MMA finish stats in the article?

This.

Women and Men are not born physical equals, and the separation is very significant in almost all cases.

Women's hockey for instance. The Canadian Olympic team wins virtually every Olympics and the only real competition they have is from the States, who they usually beat. They are the unequivocal best female hockey players in the world.

In order to prepare for the Olympics, they play Bantam AAA teams. That's a 13-15 year old boys league. They'd get destroyed (even with no contact rules) by a major junior team, who in and of themselves will graduate maybe 6% of their league to the NHL one day (most after years of minor pro).

I always find it strange how Women's football (soccer) is more popular in the states than the UK.

In the US from an early age football is seen as a girls sport, it's opposite in England.

Secondly the Premierleague is the biggest league in the world, it's kind of hard for women's football to get any attention.

Saying this though women's football is growing here a lot. Just recently this made the news.

My mom played Women's Pro Football when I was really, really young. This was like 14-15 years ago. Look up the Philadelphia Phoenix

Edit; they've since changed their name to the Philadelphia Firebirds

Great Britain has one of the best male football leagues in the world. Women's football just doesn't compare at all. Also unlike in the US soccer isn't regarded as a Women's sport...well at least in all of Europe (probably more like Rest of the World, but I only know it for sure in Europe), so the sport has that going against it.

The fact that even the strongest Women's National Teams lose against the Youth Division of Male Football Clubs (ex. German Women's National Team - 0:3 - VFB 2nd Youth Team) also doesn't exactly help the popularity of the sport over here.
