Does anyone else not give a shit about comics

Finally, a real-ass post. On that note, it's depressing that Chuck Palahniuk, a writer of multiple classics, has to reduce himself to writing in a medium for children. I think it's because people can't handle his complexity otherwise.

What the fuck, you can't trust anyone anymore. Hope you enjoy your picture books!!!

Chuck Palahniuk and complexity don't belong in the same sentence. I've enjoyed several of his books, but they are pretty easy to grasp, and he is certainly isn't reducing himself if he is writing a comic book.

i don't like the comics, but i love most of the movies, the MCU ones, i couldn't care less for the DC comics heroes, just kinda liked batman TDK but thats about it, what i hate about comic fans is when you are at the theather and hear someone telling the story about every character or everything that appears on the screen, like if they were some kind of wise person, like people that think they are the only ones who don't give a shit about something

Sex Criminals is really great so far, everyone go read that please.

The Walking Dead is so bad it's cringewrothy, I never saw 300 but it looked like it was pretty much targeting the socially awkward 16 year old loser crowd as other comic book movies... Kingsman? I mentioned Maus and this is your response? Thanks for the confirmation that it's all pretty much shit.
Never heard of Maus. I was mainly pointing out that there are a lot of adaptations of more obscure non-superhero comics

Looks interesting, definitely need to check it out.

I used to love comics when I was younger, but I never gave a shit about the superhero stuff (except TMNT). Also, stuff like Marvel, DC and so on was unavailable in my country.

Instead I grew up on Alan Ford, Dylan Dog, Martin Mystere, Il Grande Blek, Asterix, etc. I tried getting back into it a few years ago but it's impossible to find this stuff anywhere nowadays. Does anyone know if any digital service stocks these?

Also, if anyone wants really fucked up horror stuff, try to get your hands on Dylan Dog. I still remember being 10 years old and having my young mind blown by a chick getting fucked by a giant spider who was actually her lover and she really enjoyed it. The whole series kinda deals with nightmarish worlds, sometimes lovecraftian inspired and at times really brutal, gorey, extremely disturbing and fucked up shit.

I like Harley Quinn. A LOT.
Check out the Suicide Squad: Death of the Family issues
Comics = for children
To be frank, you have no idea what you're talking about. It's like saying film is a medium for children because of the superhero movies and YA adaptations
There was another one I liked, I think it was called Nemesis? I wish more comics were like that one, then maybe they'd be taken seriously

I care little about actually reading comics. That said, I can lap up the stories and lore for hours and hours...just not in the form of comic books. Films, games, articles, wikis, hell I even own a couple of encyclopedias, but I find comics in general to be somewhat unapproachable.

Those are the exceptions. Average comic sales are really sad. Based on the lousy sales, there's about a bajillion people who don't give a shit about comics.

It's also unfortunate that there is still an overwhelming dominance in not just sales but beliefs that comics = superheroes. It breaks my heart to see such quality and creative non-superhero comics struggle with sales.

Yeah, I referenced the top selling issue. A "good" comic sells ~20-30K, maybe. The industry is toast.

It's particularly sad considering the last two years of Image comics have been the strongest books to ever grace the medium. They are doing amazing stuff over there...and nobody cares.

I like super heroes and stuff but I can't care whats going on in a monthly book. Mostly cost and free time make it hard but other things like Rec-cons and most of the books that I liked either changed the main character or ended. If I had way more free time and money I'd happily jump in again but until that happens I'm happy enough with just seeing them in movies, video games and TV.

I liked comic books as a kid, but they were expensive and I put all my money towards baseball cards and video games instead.

Got older and they just never really clicked with me. When I read, I'd rather dive into a novel.

Archie is fucking nailing things lately too.

Everyone should go pick up Afterlife With Archie.

I would imagine Image comics gets more out of trades?

I don't really see the point in making a thread about not giving a shit about something. Seems... counter-intuitive.

Welp I came in here to post just this. I'm pretty sure I could post a few hundred threads about all the things in this world I don't give a shit about. What a strange thread.

Anyway, comics are just another entertainment medium.

Considering most TV and Movie adaptations of comics have 10s of millions of fans while the best selling comic books barely break 500k sales, it's pretty obvious that most people don't give a shit about comics.

I don't give a shit about comics. Manga however... .. jk

I've always wanted to give a shit about comics, but just never got seriously into them.

Maus is mainstream as far as comics go. Hell that shit is taught in schools.

If you dont like superheros there is plenty of other stuff in the medium that isnt that. Especially in Europe and Japan.

I would like to get into comic books, but they're pretty pricey. I feel more invested in videos and video games in terms of storytelling.

These threads are mainly for the OP's own feeling of validation. Find other people who agree with a preconceived idea and bask in the communal warmth of agreement.

Comics have never really appealed to me. The plots seem contrived and a lot of the characters are ridiculous. Very few series seem to take themselves seriously.

I'm sure many people say the exact same about video games, though.

They will start caring when more runs finish or advance far enough. We already see the networks trying to mine Vertigo, which is pretty much the same kind of stuff Image is currently pushing.

You realize there is more to comics, even superhero comics, then the ongoing canon universe of DC and Marvel? Comics are a medium. They hit all genres and forms just like any other medium. This is like basing your thoughts towards video games on military FPS or open world sandbox games.

Comic storytelling especially bugs me a lot. It's just so ridiculous. The constant resurrections, alternate universes, crossovers, and plot twists are hard to take in. I know a lot of great stories have been told by comic artists, but they've always rubbed me the wrong way a bit.

Tons of videogame plots are absurd, but even then they tend to be more muted than in comics. I'm not familiar of any Western games that involve beloved characters dying and being resurrected, and even more ridiculous series like Assassin's Creed tend to be more muted than comics.

The fact that nearly every character has a perfect physique is also a little weird. I can understand the heroes, but why does Justin Hammer need a fashion model's figure? Why does Pepper Potts need to like like a movie star?

Check out some comics that aren't from Marvel or DC. Image has been publishing quite a few excellent independent comics the past few years.

In video games you constantly resurrect (infinite do overs, phoenix downs). Thats a weird thing to give video games a leg up over comics in.

I don't like reading fiction.
I especially dislike comics and manga.

I do love shows and movies based on them, and hate hearing "just read the X".

I'm surprised some people dislike comics but like Marvel/DC movies. I don't like super heroes, but the comics look like they are way better than the movies ever will be.

The only comics I ever liked were the Sonic comics, and even with then, I still didn't bother to make sure I had them all, or to read up on the like 100 or so I missed.

I believe comics are amazing for so many reasons. Not the least of which being because I feel they're the most directly auteured expression of the visual story telling mediums. Comics are almost always principally created by two people and often times just one person. The medium benefits so greatly from this personal touch. There's definitely a lot to be said about collaborative efforts (interacting with actors, story in tandem with game mechanics, even managerial supervision can lead to good ideas) inherent to other mediums. But it's that distinct sense of an individual, present in nearly all comics I've read, that I love so much about them. Similar to novels but also with wicked illustrations and all the dynamics that come with paneling structure that drive my imagination in completely different ways.
shout out to chris ware

I find that the ways the personalties of so many great authors come off the page is truly remarkable and unique in comics work.

I love comics. I'm gonna go read Building Stories again.

For sure. Saga cleans up in the TPB category, and I'm sure there are others. I trade wait almost everything from Image at this point, since it makes more sense to me from a financial standpoint and reads better that way.

But that's just it: people only start to care once stuff has been optioned for TV or film. The source material is an afterthought. Compare viewership numbers for The Walking Dead with comic book sales from the series.

It's also unfortunate that the material that gets picked up for adaptation (like TWD or every single book that Millar writes) is usually not even close to the top work releasing every month in comics. Subjective, I know, but TWD isn't a great comic.

MW!! I don't give a fuck about comics. And the games they are based on. And most of the movies suck dick too. Daredevil sucked. Watchman was awesome. 300 is good. Batman Begins and Dark Knight Rising were tight. All the Spiderman movies outside of Two and the one with Jamie Foxx were crap. Did I forget to mention the videogames suck dick> Captain America One sucks, Avemgers sucked, Iron Man One was good but two and three sucked dick, Man of Steel was alright but the old Superman movies are terrible the old Batman movies suck cock as well. Thor is fucking terrible. Both of them. Some of the Xmen movies are okay. The first one sucked the second one is awesome.

I look forward to seeing Batman vs Superman.

Superheroes are the definition of lame, and I wish there was a browser extension to block all the mcu and Dc crap shitting up the OT.

I genuinely can't understand anyone over the age of ten being excited about them, and I'm a Nintendo fan. (Don't take this as fighting words or whatever, it's just a weird hole in my empathy. I literally straight up can't understand the appeal.)

There are some good comics out there tho.

if i could pay $5 a month to have unlimited access to lots of non-marvel/dc stuff i might.

right now it's too expensive and inconvenient for me to put in the effort. give me comic netflix or fuck off.

I was with you till last week OP, but then i accidently fell on one.
Sorry but you are the last one in the world now.
