Does anyone still play Stepmania or FFR?

Just wondering as I've been playing since 2003 with FFR (Flash Flash Revolution) and SWI (Step with Intensity) before moving on to Stepmania. I took a break for a while but I'm just getting back into SM and see that I've been a member of FFR for almost 10 years now. Maybe we can post screenshots of our current scores in this thread and get carpal tunnel in the process. Here's a fresh one from me (not an indication of skill, I just woke up lol):

I've not touched StepMania in quite some time but in my later era of playing rhythm games I had moved onto In The Groove as I could practice at home on the keyboard then take the charts to the Arcade on a USB to play on the machines.

Dead end was my favourite StepMania chart.

I really want to pick up stepmania/ddr again. I don't have a way to connect my dance pad to the pc. My ps2 to use adapter is incompatible, and my (boyfriend's) cobalt flux paf only has a ps2 adapter. Anyone have any advice for a working adapter? I need the exercise.

Not really. I still play it from time to time on anime conventions, though. Sadly I haven't been to one lately - last summer there were quite a few local ones cancelled. :-/

I always thought Stepmania was best for keyboard(re: impossible on foot) charts. Physical play is best in the arcades.

I've made a bunch of charts, but I lost some of my favorites when Bemanistyle's sim archive went down. :(

Funny you should mention that. Just recently, I've been trying to track down a Stepmania file and remix (titled "Tron I/O Club Remix") I made years and years ago, but can't find it anywhere and it got lost on an old computer that died on me. I know I uploaded it to the Stepmania site way back when, but I doubt it's there anymore. I looked and couldn't find it online. Is everybody's files archived somewhere or is all that stuff gone now? edit: Here it is on youtube. Forgot someone put it on there a few years back.

I used to play FFR/Stepmania a bunch, but then I moved on to DJMAX Portable. I'd install Stepmania and some song packs again if someone wanted to compare scores or something.

I played a ton of keyboard-only charts in high school, but the program is also really great for foot charts if you can find them. The local arcade switched their ddr machine out for something else. Chinatown got a new machine in a while ago, though, I should check it out.

And it was a shame when the simfile sites started closing down. =/

Funny this thread pops up while I'm getting ready to head to Chinatown Fair for some DDR.

I started years ago (2001 i believe) on Dance with Intensity then moved to Stepmania. I no longer play on my PC but every now and then I'll have an urge to do so.

Stepmania helped me learn some tricky songs at the arcade, and was also a great finger workout, lol.

Currently, I'm looking to buy a ps2 and all the DDR mixes so I can relive some old songs. Chinatown Fair recently got a 2nd machine that has both DDR Extreme and In The Groove. They also have a DDR X3 machine, Pump It Up and ReRave. Anyone else here take random trips to CF?

Btw, I love doubles. So much fun.

I used t AAA 10 star 300bpm songs but just couldn't handle the j-pop whatever anymore plus I started seeing the arrows in my dreams. Played with a keyboard

Aww man how is X3? I'm dying to play but I'm so out of shape/practice that I don't want to embarrass myself in public, haha.

At the latest Magfest I discovered I could still do So Deep Double Heavy on a DDR Extreme machine.
Not bad for someone who hasn't played in years.

I still play from time to time when I remember it exists. Had my FFR account for around 8 years. I'll always play DDR when I see a machine still though.

They died at least one time since then, didn't they? ;-)

That was more so because of a fire that took out the servers the games were being hosted on. After that, the creator Synthlight started to have family issues and the future of FFR was in dire straights until some people stepped up and helped get things running again. I'm glad they did because it would have sucked to lose a site you've been a member of for 10 years.

No. Jubeat ipad replaced those but I can't play that anymore either.

LOL I've played quite a deal of Jubeat when I was in Korea and it doesn't come close to some of the stepcharts in Stepmania/FFR. I like that there are trainer files that people can play on SM that will help you get your skills back.

X3...there are soooo many songs lol. I haven't played all of them yet. Some of the new songs are great (musically and a great stepchart). Of course, you have your BS hard songs that are just STUPID, lol. DDR Extreme was the last great DDR mix..especially in terms of stepcharts.

DDR Extreme wasn't working when I went there.

..and btw, they have joint premium on aka pay 1 credit to play doubles. The DDR X3 machine also lets you use e-amuse cards so if you have one, you can save your scores. CF sells the cards but I'm not sure if they have any at the moment.

lol, don't think that you'll be embarrassing yourself. Just go and play! The weather is becoming nice so now is the time to play. Go and have a good time...just don't go during Friday night. Wayyyy too many people there. Your best bet is probably before 3pm...before kids get out of school. That is, if you want the machine to yourself.

As for some stepmania scores...I just played a few games. I only have official DDR songs at the moment.

Chaos (from Supernova)

I love this song. Had to use Stepmania to learn all the stops when it first came out.

Possession (from DDR X3)

This song sounds AMAZING but so hard/tiring. Those jumps will drain your energy quickly.

Here's 2 youtube videos of the above songs so you can hear how they sound:

Feel free to post up any simfiles you enjoy. I wouldn't mind giving them a quick play. Anyone else play with WASD + arrow keys? Best way to play IMO.

Look up the Keyboard Community Packs. Lots of great files even though they will take some skill to play.

Here's my score for now. Many of these songs I used to be able to AAA but age takes it toll lol.

Always dreamed of gettting a metal pad to play at home to try to lose some weight, anyone knows how long they last? The plastic pads are useless once you start dancing the difficult standard songs.

They´re quite solid, i am a big guy, and mine holds really well, my pad is this one by the way:

The model is TX-1501

I got started with FFR around 2006 and moved on to Stepmania shortly after. Still play pretty frequently, usually stuff like Mad Matt's Tachyon packs (if anyone is familiar with them) - I play just using my index fingers as opposed to most people using four, and I seem to have hit a wall with progress around 260-270bpm.

I also used to have a metal pad and was progressing nicely but that had to go due to room issues. I figured I'd had a good amount of use out of it and I'd buy another if I had the room later on, now I have the room but finding one to buy in the UK now is impossible. I've seen some from the US but they charge £400+ for shipping. :(

Also: RIP, Simfile.pl - I never was that much into Stepmania, but they have made some really fun songs. Bad Apple (Graph Tech Remix), Vodka, Stupid MF, April Fool No Uta, Lucky Star Douga etc...

(no, the vid isn't mine - there were better ones, but it looks they are deleted now...)

I picked up some Beatmania PS1 discs over the weekend and after struggling to play them on my PS3 with the regular controller it got me thinking about my DDR days.

It really is a shame that Guitar Hero kinda took over then totally vanished. DDR is a non-entity as is Beatmania and there's no way to play any of the stuff on any of the new systems really due to controller manufacturers just stopping their stuff (Red Octane/Cobalt Flux going outta business was a big thing) and no compatibility with old controller ports.

It's a shame, my girlfriend has been wanting to get back into DDR again and asks me what's the best way to do it, there really is no simple solution anymore like "just buy a copy of DDR MAX for PS2" or something.

I still play Stepmania from time to time, I usually play old school songs from the original community packs like quasar and whatnot. Seems like the new generation is playing Osu instead. Sadly even bemanistyle's database is gone...
