Does straight whiskey ever taste good?

I've been drinking for 10 years. Can put down vodkas, tequilas, rums (the easiest). Whiskey I have not been able to get a handle on. It makes IPAs taste like strawberry shakes. Reason I ask is cuz I see in movies, shows, and games how people just put that shit down. What the hell?

And dont tell me to stick to single malts or distill it with water. Im talkin straight fuckin bitch ass whiskey.

Drink responsibly.

Quality bourbon on the rocks I can do no worries. Whiskey, yeah nah go fuck yourself, it does not go down easy.

Give me this on the rocks over whiskey -

I drink cheap shit like Jim Beam or Evan Williams because it goes down perfect mixed with Diet Coke or Coke Zero. (Technically bourbon but it’s pretty damn similar to me)

But yeah I can’t get down with drinking it on the rocks on a regular basis. It does sip the easiest out of all the hard alcohols to me so there’s that.

I’m drinking straight whisky as I read your post.

There’s no requirement that you like it, but “whisky” is really a super broad category that covers lots of liquors. You might hate American whisky but prefer Irish or Scotch, or etc.

It takes some getting used to, but yeah there are whiskeys that are great to drink neat.

Personally I like makers mark

This one. :) Sad they don't carry it where i live atm. :(

I like ales, stouts, porters, pilsners etc. I usually try new stuff after every 6/4 pack.

I prefer dark beer in general.

After living in three major cities in like a 5 year span, I’ve come to the conclusion that most microbreweries have the same shit.

They’ll have an IPA, a Double IPA, some crazy thick stout, some sort of hoppy wheat beer, and a hoppy Pilsner with some kind of summery name. At this point if you don’t like hops you’re in trouble.

The bigger ones will do seasonal beers and usually include some kind of spiced flavor beer for Christmas.

There’s like an 80% chance that the brewery will also be some kind of Gastropub that serves the same overindulgent bar food that’s in every city that claims to have “an up and coming food scene and great breweries”.

I got so bored running around all the different breweries that my favorite beer is probably Sapporo or Kirin Ichiban which are more on the malty side and you’ll almost never find a malty beer at a microbrewery. Past that, love Mexican restaurants that serve a nice cold 32oz Dos Equis in a chilled glass. Pair that with some chips and beef fajitas and you’re eating like a king.

Mexican beer is terrible. It is only somewhat not shit when paired with seafood.

Sounds like whiskey just isn’t for you at the moment. Peoples’ tastes change and evolve over time. I feel like younger people gravitate towards vodka, rum, tequila just like you mentioned. I went through preferring each of those types and eventually settled on whiskey being my favorite. I think it’s due in large part to being an American and the barrel aging process (there are lots of cheap, smooth whiskeys you can buy in the US).

I'm early 40s and can't drink Scotch but I got into bourbon a few years ago and now have no issues getting hammered on it 4 nights a week

You need to find your taste.

Some people prefer Ballantine's, others prefer J & B, Cutty Sark, White Horse, Chivas Regal, etc.

There isn’t a way to drink bourbon other than straight. Take a sip and give it that Kentucky chew to really savor and taste it. Makers and Beam Black are my go-tos.

I always recommend Woodford Reserve Double Oaked for newbs. It’s a little sweet and syrupy smooth.

-A Kentuckian.

Old Style is the best beer.

-A Chicagoan.

I usually prefer having it with a ton of ice to numb my tastebuds but yeah you get used to it over time.

You know what makes it easy? Being extremely drunk already and not being able to taste anything.

That's the only way I drink whiskey. If the taste and aroma seem too strong, take a shot, breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth.
