Does straight whiskey ever taste good?

I don't know what triggers me the most. This threads mere existence or the fact that people actually drink bourbon. Must be some American thing.

Whiskey is great. I can definitely drink it just as is. But of course single malts are better, that is like comparing blue pabst ribbon to some fine micro-brewery after all.

Grant's is my go to whiskey, or at least was. It's not particularly tasty compared to other whiskeys but is cheap and gets the job done. The last 6 months or so I have discovered Highland Queen, a blended whiskey that is so smooth it's almost dangerous.

Try it!

I'm really not a whiskey connoisseur, but a while ago one of my co-workers introduced me to whiskey that's very peaty. After getting over the initial difficulty of drinking what smelled like the La Brea tar pits, I found myself wanting another glass......then another......then another.

Think it was Laphroaig, forget the age.

I'm a dirty heathen and enjoy the taste of straight JD.

For something a little more refined, make it Suntory time.

I think they make more expensive bottles than this but someone bought this for my Birthday a few years back and it was incredible.

Only Whisky my gf has been able to drink straight without pulling that 'gagging on your giant nuts' look on her face.

Just don't drink it if you don't like it.

I love "straight" whiskey (do people really mix fucking whiskey? stop). One ice cube. I'm not a gin guy though and everyone seems to love that stuff.

You want this:

Reasonably priced. Great flavor. The absolute best I've found that will warm your throat but not burn. My wife and I try lots of different brands, this has been a steady favorite for a long time.

Woodford Reserve is good too. After that it can get pricey.

I usually drink straight but there are some good old man drinks if you're at a restaurant like:

Godfather
Ingredients
1 ounce Scotch whisky
1 ounce amaretto
Ice
Orange twist, for garnish (optional)

Old Fashioned
1/2 teaspoon sugar
3 dashes Angostura bitters
1 teaspoon water
2 ounces bourbon
Garnish: orange peel
[Note: at home i would skip the sugar and water]

There is also an odd drink we tried out of some library book [cant remember name of drink]..
It's 1 part whiskey, 1 part dark rum, 1 part tequila

Which sounds fucking awful, but everybody enjoyed it. [I like picking random drinks out and trying them, no matter how ridiculous they sound]

Oh god yeah, if I'm drinking a "cocktail" I'm drinking an Old Fashioned or Godfather. There's a good bar in my city that does a smoked old fashioned with a hint of maple syrup and that's about as fancy as I get.

I just don't even consider either of those "mixed", you're basically drinking whiskey with a twist, and it's delicious.

Love whisky, hit me with that peat, Islay all the way.
Went to visit several distilleries in Scotland, fun to share those experiences with friends that also like whisky.

If you're willing to give it (another) go the standard whiskys you'll find on any european restaurant menu are a good way to start:
Talisker, Jameson, Glenfiddich

Mixers are great too, dark and deep flavours from the whisky paired with nice fruit juice, nom.
God I love drinking.

edit:
...and i go for peaty whisky, they are my favorite

Most of the "good" and expensive Whiskeys I have been offered tasted like someone put socks in there that have been worn a for few weeks.

And no, that's not part of my fetish...

The supposed great and expensive stuff doesn't tickle my fancy either, I'd rather go for expensive wines and stick to the 20-40 bucks range of whisky.

Real men drink whiskey. Truth.

I am over beer and all of its heavy porters, IPAs, stouts, etc. That shit is disgusting, and makes me groggy/sleepy. Pour me a nice bourbon/whiskey and that is where the magic happens. Neat, on the rocks, old fashioned, doesn't matter. It's versatile and delicious

You need to get a good brand.

Makers 46
Bullit Bourbon
Templeton Rye
Elijah Craig
Horse Soldier Bourbon
Woodford Reserve

Any of those are in my rotation. Plan on spending $50-80 for any of those though.

Try Japanese whiskey, usually a lot smother and less smokey. Its an acquired taste though, a good single malt is for sipping, if you want to just "down" something you're better off with burbon or some cheap blended stuff like Jameson.

My grandfather used to say "Canadian Whisky isn't complicated, it's like a good friend. You don't need to have a deep conversation, you just enjoy their company"
This is my family's favorite brand, it's fucking awesome, mixed with 7UP, Ginger Ale, Cola or just on ice with or without water.

Bourbon and Canadian whisky (blended rye) are the only things I drink, always neat

Big fan of the standard american stuff like Woodford reserve, wild turkey, and bulleit, as well as some of the lesser known Canadian ones like 40 Creek, Collingwood and Bearclaw. Also into the Japanese Suntory stuff, Hibiki goes does real smooth every time.

I personally prefer whiskey neat as opposed to on the rocks. I haven't met anyone who shares this opinion as of yet.

I used to hate it neat, but now I like it. Sometimes I want neat, sometimes I want ice, sometimes I want a cocktail. That's the beauty of whiskey. I think I like it neat the most with a cigar to combine all of the flavors

Never been into liquor myself OP. I only drink whiskey on the rocks when I want to get toasty as quickly as possible, usual at large social gatherings. Otherwise if I want to actually enjoy what I’m drinking it’s wine or beer. No shame.

Hey OP let tell you a little secret , what you see people drinking in movies, TV shows etc. isn’t Whiskey or any alcohol but mostly some sort of fruit juice or soda.
The reason they don't want real alcohol in scene is that, it is typical to retake a shot many times from many angles .If actors drink real alcohol in every shot, they'll be intoxicated way before the shoot is over.

Probably the Yamazaki, though the Hibiki is a bit lighter and honestly I like it more. Yamazaki is closer to a true scotch with a lot more peat taste in it

I suppose you are correct they escape the 'mixed' category. That feels right, and makes me happy.

I think I'll stick with the Hibiki then as it's so smooth and light, plus the gf can handle it.

EARLY TIMES is what I meant to say before. It reminds me of no name "well" drinks you get at a dive bar.

here comes a new challenger...

After a couple glasses it gets real smooth and the flavour comes out.

But really, when I was drinking whiskey every other night I noticed that alcohol burn gets a lot more subtle and your able to get the notes a lot easier. I don't have a great palette for this stuff though. Always drank it neat.

My favourite is a Glenfiddich straight, quite like chivas regal as well which is pretty good for a blended. Other notable mentions are Glenlivet and Jura. Scottish all the way for me. Only time I mix my whisky is if I have a cold and have a hot toddy, but only use cheap stuff for that.

Also like gin, either bombay sapphire or whitley neill, but has to be with tonic (pref slimline) and ice. Always good when you are bloated due to too much beer.

Ignore my previous post, the best cheap whisky is Islay Mist.

blend_isl21.jpg

And the reason I only post cheap whiskys is because it would be a bad idea to spend a lot of money on a fine bottle only to then not be able to stand it anyway. Whisky is the alcohol-equivalent of Souls-games. Punishing but rewarding when you get the hang of it.

Sub_Level Sub_Level It's impossible to know which (if any) whisky will "take" for you, so if you care about acquiring the taste (and I don't believe there's any shame in simply giving it up), the best route is to have or make a friend who can supply you with samples of several whiskies at once, preferably running the gamut from smooth to kick-you-in-the-teeth. I had a friend who introduced me to whisky using Johnny Walker and Tullamore Dew; but it turns out I like it rough.

Smells like fresh rosebuds
I loooooove Suntory Hibiki. I can drink it straight. Jameson Black as well. And scothch's good old Johnnie Walker anything Green Label or above is hard to beat for me. Except for Swing, I love Johnnie Walker Swing.

I like Talisker 18 year old. I make my old fashioned with that. Whisky can be versatile too tho. You can dilute, or add a little disaronno which is pretty good. I go the traditional old fashioned sugar cube route tho, with some angostura bitters and squeezed orange peel.

Straight whisky tastes awesome.

People rave about single malts (and deservedly so) but the dislike for blends is pure snobbery.
