Dolphin - Emulating Wii and Gamecube Games

So what games are best in 3D? I have Nvidia 3DTV play on a Panasonic plasma. It only allows 720p60 but I still bet games will look good. Also Rogue Squadron is the one game I've wanted in Dolphin for years now, but it never was even close to working iirc.

Racing games are an excellent candidate for 3D, so games like Burnout or F-Zero GX.
When doing 3D, I recommend adjusting the convergence so that 3D objects closest to you are at screen depth; this way the HUD will always be in front. Having 3D objects closer than screen depth will make them "pop" out of the screen, but they'll also be "in front of" the HUD, which will give your brain a hard time.

Geez those high definition screenshots look awesome! Considering the questionable legality of emulators I'm surprised this topic has not been closed.

Emulators are not of questionable legality. They are legal software as long as they are not distributed with copyrighted files.

So I assume they're far enough along in dolphin development that I should be able to just download the latest version and play xenoblade with minimal effort and adjustment?

I believe there's one adjustment you need to do if you want the save screen to properly display the screencap (set EFB to Copies to RAM), but it works well for the most part. I'm using a developer build newer than the latest stable build to take advantage of the newer renderer and have an easier time to use the HD retexture mod (also needs Texture Cache set to Fast), but outside of a few graphical effects causing slowdown I have no real issues. Playing at 1920x1200, I forget the internal res and AA I have set.

Dolphinbar works great. No more difficult to connect a wiimote to my PC than to an actual wii now (if I could only turn on the PC with the wiimote!). Also seems more accurate than my old wireless bar. The cursor is less skittish. No trouble to set up. Didn't even need the driver disc. Plug and play.

I recommend it.

Has anyone else messed around with using a Dualshock 4? Mario Galaxy's actually pretty enjoyable with it. I have the IR input set to my mouse and I'm using the touchpad for it. It takes some getting used to, but so far it feels pretty nice.

Also, is there a specific audio setting that's generally the best, or does it change considerably per person? I'm currently using HLE with my backend as OpenAL, and the latency at 5, since that reduces most of the crackling I was getting.

Does dolphin bar work with other Bluetooth devices? I would love to get this, because I want it for dolphin, but I also need Bluetooth for dual shock 4. I don't have another Bluetooth adapter.

I think it works solely with Wiimotes.

Is anyone else having problems exiting out of emulation with the esc key? I just redownloaded the newest dolphin to play some GC games for the first time in a few months, and now whenever I try to quit with esc the emulator just freezes up and I have to close it with the task manager

Yep, happens to me too.

My niece and i are almost done with Ratatouille using dolphin and a dual shock 4. Haven't had a single glitch or crash, and we're about finished with the game. Really amazing quality emulator, even more so on my modest system (FX6300 + 660ti).

Can anyone help me with Custom Textures?

I have Dolphin 4.0 and a PAL version of Wind Waker, I'm have renamed all my textures to GZLP01 so they have the correct file names.

However, I can seemingly get all the textures in the environment and HUD to load just fine, however I can't get any custom Link textures working. I drop and drag them into the correct folder and I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.

I'm using the OPENGL plug in.

FFS after searching for 2 hours I found my own answer lmao, right after I make a post.

Found my fix here, just set up your game the same as the developer I guess.

Makes sense :)

Answer to my own question. Texture Fix.

Can I rip Wii games using a WiiU?

So I hate to ask a question that I've asked before, but what are the best settings for modest systems to run the latest version of Dolphin (nightly or official release) for Xenoblade Chronicles? I ask because I've been using a "dirty build" from about a year ago or older, and it runs the game a lot smoother than the latest releases (30fps with a few dips every once in a while, especially in combat). Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

@Barrow Roll, @Skyfireblaze
Thanks for the reply.

I will try my luck with my laptop's DVD drive.
But I will grab a WiiU Splatoon bundle.

Hey guys I'm new to this and I would like to know if I can emulate the gamecube game Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds and play it with a controller? Preferably with the Xbox One or DS4 controller.

Well blown me down, I'm legitimately shocked you can rip Wii games with the WiiU, that's actually fanstastic.

Yeah, the Wii U can do everything a Wii can do since it becomes a actual Wii in Wii mode.

You're welcome! :) And hmm it's worth a try but only very specific drives work as far as I know :/

Does Dolphin lose it's memory of the save data location every time it updates or something? I ripped my GC memory cards now Dolphin doesn't know where they are and I don't explicitly remember either. I moved them local to the Dolphin install I think. One of my least favorite parts of emulators is their UX.

Every recent Dolphin revision I've tried uses My Documents\Dolphin Emulator as the default location for saves, settings, resources etc. regardless of where the emulator is actually located.

Yeah I think that's what it defaulted to. I'm pretty sure I explicitly put it elsewhere though because My Documents is a complete mess thanks to, well, devs like the Dolphin devs. I definitely changed it in a prior version.

I grabbed a developer version a while back to finish my Xenoblade run (4.0-4091), aside from a few stutters here and there it pretty much worked out fine, though I have a bit more than a modest system spec. Start with D3D at your display's native resolution, try a small uptick in Internal Res (something like 1.5x or 2x), no AA, 16x AF. Set EFB Copies to RAM in the Hacks tab (fixes the corrupted save/load screencap image), Texture Cache Accuracy to Fast. HLE audio should be fine now as well.

If you can sustain a solid 30 FPS with that running around the larger areas and in most of your battles, then you can play around with upping some of the graphics options. If not, lower the resolution a bit and internal res to 1X and try again until you find a res that you can have a sustainable framerate.

There's the HD texture pack as well that's been updated quite a bit since a few years ago if you're interested in that. Using that will increase your initial load time quite a bit on launch, but shouldn't cause any load issues once the game's running.

Is there a quick way to shut off a dolphinbar without disconnecting it from the PC? I'm trying to play super house of dead ninja on steam but it won't detect my Xbox controller. It thinks the wiimote is the primary controller.

Does it run on Bluetooth? You can disable the Bluetooth Adapter in the Device Manager.

EDIT: So DolphinBar is a USB device? It should also show up in the Device Manager. No idea what it would be named. :(

I'm trying to backup my Metroid Prime Trilogy with friidump and... I'm getting nothing. It fails at initializing the drive and sounds like the drive is just repeatedly spinning up and stopping.

I'd say it's possibly down to me using an IDE-to-USB adapter for my drive as I don't feel like opening up my desktop again... but Gamecube games seem to rip ok with this setup.

Edit: What the fuck, it just started working. It says it'll take 6+ hours to rip. I hope there's no other problems that arise...

Ok I'm having serious problems with the Dolphinbar. It simply will not recognize my Wiimote+ as a real wiimote. It does the mouse and keyboard thing fine but when I try to manually synch I get nothing. This old computer doesn't have Bluetooth but I was told this thing doesn't need bluetooth.

Metroid Prime Trilogy is a dual-layer DVD, which the Wii can have trouble reading, so that's probably the source of whatever issues you're having are.

Are you using Dolphin 4.0-2241 or newer?

Why would they want to remove it if it gets one of the most requested GC games working?.

And where can I get this hack I must have it

You can't remove what was never there in the first place. As a bit of background on why they might not want to include this feature is that it doesn't properly emulate zfreeze and instead tries to produce the same kind of results through a hack. For an accuracy focused emulator this is a no-no. Over the past year or so the Dolphin development team has been working on removing a bunch of old hacks and replacing them with more accurate feature implementations so at this point the idea of adding in even more hacks is frowned upon. Also my understanding is that this hack doesn't work 100% either. Finally the hack only works with the Rogue Squadron games and actually breaks the emulation of other zfreeze games.

You can download it here: https://dl.dolphin-emu.org/wips/phire-dolphin-fake_zfreeze2-4.0-4708+-x64.7z

Yeah. Only one program (friidump) can real dual-layer discs apparently. It would occasionally fail when "Initializing DVD Drive" but then suddenly started working.

It took around 6 hours, but MPT ripped successfully and seems to work perfectly.

Make sure you're using the most recent firmware for Dolphinbar. I've no idea how to check it, as my Dolphinbar worked with my Wii Remote Plus straight out of the box.

Hey all, it's been about a year since I last used Dolphin and in that time I've upgraded to Wii Remote Pluses and lost my Bluetooth connector so I can't use the remotes at all.

To get my setup back up and running all I should need is to buy the DolphinBar and the latest version of Dolphin, right?

Got my Dolphin Bar. This is by far the most comedically too-short USB cable I've ever seen attached to a device. Who could have possibly decided this is acceptable? A USB extender is basically required unless you're using a laptop or something where the USB port is literally inches away from the screen. It also gets hot, was not expecting that at all.

Did have to update both dolphin and the dolphin bar to get it working, seems good now though, but the speaker data seems to be corrupted--common issue? Seems good for the price, but quite clearly cheap as possible. Still much better than fussing with normal bluetooth for the wiimote which is all I really wanted, plus the sensor bar without needing to turn a wii/wii U on.

Unrelated, but is there a way to disable that infernal "free DSP" warning every single time I launch a game?

The branch here works better for me with Rogue Leader than the other one posted by PGamer. This is the hack that removes the skybox, just ported over to a more recent build of Dolphin, as opposed to the more sophisticated hack in the other branch.

Thanks for the reply's guys. When you guys upgrade to the latest Dolphin firmware, do you delete the old Dolphin builds? I still have the old 3.5 build on my comp as well. Maybe that is keeping my Wiimote from working with Dolphinbar?
